Breaking Weather News - Perth breaks heatwave record
Brett Dutschke, 23 October 2008

Perth is in its longest October heatwave in 111 years of records, four consecutive days of 30 degrees or hotter. And residents are waking up to the prospect of having to put up with another 30-degree day today.

The previous longest October streak was three consecutive days, which occurred four times, most recently in 1978.

Normally in October Perth averages no more than two days of 30 degrees or hotter. So far this month there have been five days which is equal to the record, set in 1969.

Northeasterly winds since last weekend are keeping the temperature as much as five above average, day and night.

Despite wind shifting more humid westerly each day rainfall has stayed away from the city. Any showers and storms have just missed and some have these have brought decent rain. In the wheat belt yesterday a severe storm produced 16mm of rain in 10 minutes and 96km/h winds at Cunderdin.

what does stw mean?

The past few days have been slightly cooler, also the nights. A few drops of rain occasionally with lots of dark clouds but no great showers. The sea temperature has warmed up a lot but thankfully the local pool has now opened so I won't have sea-snakes and turtles popping up next to me. The blustery winds have dropped off a great deal, although they were great for the kite surfers at Pelican Point. All in all a rather pleasant place to be at the moment.

The forecast is for showers every day for perth from monday onwards...

and their are predictions by ocf that we "could" get 22mm on thursday.

Also the amount predicted this week if it happens will put us over the average of 53mm laugh

Cool today with low 20 degree temps...much of the same with the temps for most of the week (mainly low 20's)

Looks like there may be some good storms on the way.from wz news page..Thunderstorms will affect central and southern Western Australia in the next day or two bringing pockets of good rain, but some storms may be severe.

There is a chance of brief heavy rain from storms, leading to flash flooding. Damaging winds are also a possibility while there is only a slight risk of large hail.

A few storms will develop just inland of the west coast this evening but will not bring much rain and wind. They will become more widespread and heavier overnight and more so tomorrow when they are most likely to become severe.

More moisture is available than during the last month due to the sea surface warming up a little, so we can expect some handy rain.

Anywhere inland and south of Perth and Kalgoorlie has a chance of picking up 20 millimetres or more. While storms will not affect all locations most will get one to five millimetres and a few will miss out.

Perth is on 32mm this month, average is 53mm.

So we need some "good rains" to fall....

Will be interesting to see the totals that come from the showers in the next few days....

and from the "storms".

I read somewhere that the sea surface temps are warming up a bit, so I am thinking that that may enhance the rain prospects smile

A severe storm has hit the state's south coast, cutting electricity to thousands of homes.

Wind gusts of up to 80 kilometres an hour swept through Hopetoun this morning, damaging houses and uprooting trees.

The town's historic hotel was worst hit. The hotel's veranda has been torn off and the stone facade has crumbled.

Police are asking residents to avoid Veal Street and the Esplanade because of flying debris and fallen powerlines.

State Emergency Service crews and Police are cleaning up the damage.

Nice pressure gradient. 95km/hr SE wind at Cape Leeuwin. Bit of a drop in pressure there the last couple of hours as surface trough forms inland

some areas of the wheatbelt got more rain than they needed with 65mm falling in 2 hours in

Perth got 6mm overall which means we are 15mm below the average this month.

Monday is the next event for perth ... i think.

York farmers counting the cost of overnight flooding

-_________________________

The Shire of York in the West Australian Wheatbelt is assessing damage from heavy rain overnight.

Some areas of the shire recorded 65 millimetres of rain in two hours.

The York Shire President Pat Hooper says crews have been out cleaning up after flash flooding washed away parts of some roads.

He says parts of the farming community have also taken a hit.

"At this stage it's hard to ascertain all the damage but I have got reports of stock losses, at least one dam has burst its banks, we've got (damaged) fences and obviously hay and grain that's about to be harvested could have also taken a fair bit of damage," he said.

Showers are set to continue across southern parts of Western Australia over the next few days, ensuring most agricultural regions of the state record above average October rainfall.

Thunderstorms brought heavy falls to some inland towns on Tuesday with Newdegate in the Great Southern picking up 43mm, almost double their monthly average and wettest October day on record.

While storms cleared into the Bight on Wednesday, showers persisted near the state's southern coastline in fresh southerly winds.

The showers will return to inland regions on Thursday as a cold pool of air tracks north from the Southern Ocean. Heavy thundery falls are again possible with pockets of the Great Southern, Southern Coastal and southern Goldfields likely to receive in excess of 20mm.

The rain will gradually contract east on Friday, clearing up in time for the weekend.

No rain here just annoying wind, wind, wind and it's cooled down a lot too. The sea's very choppy and murky, not good for swimming. Very blustery and dusty you can't even take a stroll without nearly becoming airborne. Hopefully will not last much longer, this wind makes the temperature seem much cooler. The tide was so low today that parts of the fascine bed were visible. frown

Yeah it was windy here too in Perth and only around 19.5 degrees, though the average for October is 22, so that is nothing out of the ordinary.

There are showers forecast for Perth for Monday to Wednesday.

Can somebody please give me an idea when this wind will abate. I don't know about the future weather forecast for the Gascoyne and want to know how long it [the wind] will last. Thanks.
