Our house almost recorded a direct lightning hit, within about 20 metres I reckon. I am not sure what it hit but it knocked out the power smile

I still don't believe any of these cells are all that severe, there is always alot of hype straight after something happens. I heard one person on the radio refer to a strong straight line wind as a nader. He said 3 have gone through in the last 10 mins. People listening to him would have been frightened, I just thought get this idiot off the radio.

There isnt a breaking weather thread Teckert and whats wrong with posting in here anyway, as the title suggests it is day to day weather thread so why can't we post day to day weather in here?

Though as Lert says it is pretty much all over for Perth, the back of the trough line has all but cleared the metro area now, seemed to hover over my neck of the woods for a decent time though smile Will be interesting to see how much my home gauge has got, probably be another 5 maybe 10mm since I left at 8am this morning.

In regard to the emerald green lightning squid, was that like a flash of green from the base of the strike? if so it would be the explosion of a electricity transformer on an overhead line after being struck by lightning.

My total for the event will probably be around 20-25mm which is rather good when consider the poor falls elsewhere, so I am happy, though this event had so much more potential. Still looks as though they may still be some more showers overnight so hopefully there is more to come.

and yeah that trough has really beefed up now, nice solid block of rain to our NW now, pity that didnt happen before it went through Perth!

Finally managed to find a news report on that Rockingham nader:

Quote:
'Tornado' rips through southern Perth
The State Emergency Service (SES) says it appears a tornado has ripped through Perth's southern suburbs, leaving behind a path of destruction.
The SES in Rockingham has received 14 calls for help after this morning's storm.
A Port Kennedy house sustained the worst damage, with part of its roof caving in and strong winds ripping the air-conditioner from the house and onto the road.
The home owners had only just finished a two-year renovation project.
Further north, 2,000 homes around Shenton Park remain without power.
Sounds like a decent strength one too, to rip out an airconditioner and chuck it out onto the road would require a decent strength nader.

Yer sorry. There was a Briefing Room thread started which I thought was in the BW forum. shocked
Naturally it would be best and easier for people to follow the system if there was a corresponding BW thread but if you guys prefer having all discussion in the one general thread so be it.

I think that no-one here minds one general thread.

I know I certainly don't because I have this thread bookmarked and it is much easier to get to.

To the weather.

What a fizzer!!! for the SW anyway. No where near 120mm anywhere. The most would be around 37 mm in shannon after having a quick look at the obs.

Well the models went backwards and forwards on that system and at the end of it the BOM's pull back was well considered. Though by the look of it the cloud band has not had much moisture inflow from the nw at all. I think that Kirk was right on the ball on the 17th of May when he said that we shouldn't get too excited about it!!

Next weeks system is looking interesting with a low somewhere around the sw of WA but after the last one I might give it a few more runs before I start trying to pin it down smile

Yeah too true Mike! was definitely a dissapointment considering the potential for some very heavy falls, at least a few days out anyway. I remember thinking on the Monday while looking at the sat pic that it didnt look very promising, was nowhere near enough tropical inflow for a major rain event. Then after watching the rain radar all of Monday night and seeing next to no development I was really starting to worry. As it turns out even though the rainfall was fairly poor we did get a very good period of unsettled weather with some nice lightning and thunder and we all know that doesnt happen very often here in perth! smile

Regarding that Rockingham nader, on the news last night they said it packed winds of 170km/hr so it would have been a fairly strong F1 tornado.

Tim,

Not sure if you would agree with me on this or not but I think in the last couple of years if there is damage it is automatically a 'mini tornado'. Instead of saying it was just strong winds they use mini tornado. I personally think yesterday was just a case of a very strong microburst

Yeah your right Kirk, I don't agree with you. :p I can't really say for certain though judging by the description of the damage it does sound like one. They said there was a 2km long trail of damage in a small strip and by the pics of the house that lost its air con, the houses next door were hardly damaged at all. Also if it were a microburst of that strength there would have been a lot more damage over a lot wider area, to get 170km/hr winds from a microburst would mean it would have to be quite severe.
