Surely most of that's from the 2003 fires?

Aeros and Blair.

When I wrote the die-back is huge, that was badly written. I should have written, the devastation appears to be huge.

The 2003 fires are responsible for almost all of the damaged trees in the photo, from my last post. The trees are all the one species, Snow Gums, E.pauciflora. These trees are regenerating from the base of their trunks. Not all is lost.

Scatterings of Phytophthora have been discovered in Kosciuszko NP's sub-alpine and alpine landscapes. Between Dead Horse Gap and Mount Jagungal, so far. Dr Ken Green (NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service) and Dr Keith McDougall (NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change) have identified Phytophthra affecting high country shrubs like, Nematolepis ovatifolia amongst others.

The sign warning about reducing the spreading Phytophthera, a soil-borne water mould is relatively new at Dead Horse Gap. The researchers aren't sure if the mould has been brought into the region or it has always been there but dormant. It is suggested that now changing climatic conditions have allowed the mould to become more active.

Warren.

The Snowy River from the giant land snake to the river's highest dry lagoon below North Ramshead ... about a 10 minute ramble beside the Upper Snowy.

A giant land snake crosses the Snowy River, in the Ramshead Range.

... after a bit of a climb amongst the tors, now was a good time to turn around and head back to Thredbo Top Station before the chair lift stopped running at 4.30pm.

... but there's always time for one last shot. A giant salver in a bed of Alpine Water-fern (Blechnum pinna marina sp. alpina) or Mother Sheild-fern (Polystichum proliferum)? ... which likes to grow in the rocks. I can't tell which of the two plants it is from my photo.

Aeros and DaveM, it is my pleasure and you are most welcome. A few more shots from early February.

The Ram's Head Range, from Dead Horse Gap, NSW.

Tumut River nocturn, at the start of the Cascades Trail.

The confluence of Bogong Creek and the Tumut River, from the Alpine Way.

Another shot of fire damage. The Great Dividing Range, below the Ramshead Range.

Warren.
