Launceston has reached 30 for the third day in a row. That's six days greater than 30 this year already. The long term average is five.

Even next week till at least Wednesday it will still be anywhere from 27 c to 29 c ?
Very serious conditions ahead if fires get away on Thurs and Fri .
+1 to yep , it's like the whole state has been relocated to some other part of Australia.

Didn't go near 30 or MH2O's prediction of 33, a rather milder day than forecast at 24. Tomorrow will be quite cool, Friday is the main concern re the fires.

Evening all,
Up here at Tods Corner, came up with my slip on fire unit. The fire has stayed to the West SW of us over the back of Miena and near lake Echo and Pentstock.
Can confirm no fire East of the Highland Lakes Hwy or Tods Corner.
Very smoky at times with cold ash.
Will keep you all updated.
30% chance dry lightning Friday and possibly 35 again next Tuesday not good.
Home tomorrow lunch time to go fire fighting down the Huon.

Who thinks a 40 is possible?
Looks good for Grove, Brighton, Glenorchy, Campania!
Back from Great Lake tonight, myvbrother said the hills are glowing well tonight with the fire making it to the back of the Shannon Lagoon.

I think we deserve a 40 somewhere on Friday considering how hot this month will turn out to be. With all the fire activity around at the moment though hoping we get a gentle breakdown in the weather pattern pretty soon. Probably the only gentle way to end the threat would be a mainland trough bringing decent rain/storms. Otherwise, as Markus says on the page before this one, fire weather conditions prior to any proper shift is just going to produce a very extreme outcome. Are there any fires right now behind the Wellington Range that could conceivably pose a risk to Hobart in the longer term?

Looks like the driest January on record is close to a sure thing ( as well as the heat records ).

good luck stale fish and top work. be great to hear any news when you get downtime o(if you do) on the tahune fire. been watching it and if NW west gust as predicted, can see it firing to geeveston and maybe jumping the river to my way at Cradoc/Cygnet. cars are packed just in case, will block the gutters in the morning and fill.

Evening all,
Yes a big day tomorrow, will be one that will be remembered unfortunately.
I will keep some updates coming when I get a chance.
One tip is go to the Website http://myfirewatch.landgate.wa.gov.au/ this will show where the fires are from the satellites.
No fires behind the Mt atm.
Looks like storms are the biggest danger. With the combination of the current fires and strong winds.

Yeah there could unfortunately be a chance of some dry storms again.

My word we could use a good drink!

The previous driest January was in 2008 and i looked back and the month after was above average rainfall. (64mm in Feb 2008)

Hopefully something similar is in store for February.

Morning all,

A concerning amount of fires burning across the state at the moment, 5x Emergency warnings, 9x Watch and Acts and 7x fires at Advice level. Hope we don't see a lot of dry lightning- looks to be all South of the state.

Lots of smoke around and even some light ash falling at times here out at Brighton. Currently a hot 30.1 C with an overnight low of 16.6 C, warm overnight in the city with it only getting down to 20.3 C.

Really concerning these winds this afternoon with mean speeds of 50 km/h.

Where's the wind, is it still coming? If so serious chance of 40 for Hobart and surrounds? Campania is almost there.

Not good at all Boxingkoala!

Winds are starting to pick up out here at Brighton, gusts getting up to 56 km/h now. Averaging 30 km/h.

Will be interesting watching the wind speeds this arvo, as i have changed the cup anemometer on the VP2 to a new ultrasonic anemometer for greater accuracy!

Temp in Brighton at 38.4C.. 40 is a possibility!

Hobart Airport 40.1 - not a site that I would have suspected. Although Campania was close at 39.8.
