Looks like everyone is going to have to find something else to do now???

Morning All,

This post is to notify everyone that this forum will close down very soon.

I want to thank everyone who has contributed to this forum over the past 10 years and in particular the moderators. Without their hard work we would have had to shut down a long time ago.

The forum will become read-only on the 29th of July and it will shut down on the 1st of November.

Thanks again for all your contribution and hopefully the community will be able to find a new home.

Thanks

Todd Baker

as you guys might have already read, this forum will be closing down in a few weeks.
As an 18 year member of the forum I have had the pleasure of meeting some great people, many of whom I can say are great friends.
We have had so many events in our part of the world over the years, it has been a real pleasure to go through the good and bad with you all. Sharing the experience has been what has made this forum a great place over two decades. Cyclones Larry, Yasi, Yuli and Debbie. So many flooding events, of course this years Townsville floods top that list for me and of course the lean years when 0.4mm was regarded as a relief to get a drop - but thats Townsville!!
While we are still some weeks away from closing, I just wanted to personally thank all of you for contributing to a great community.

Sadly technology moves on, if any of you have any suggestions in a way we car achieve the forums or have them transferred through to another site, please contribute to the thread in the general weather forum.

Kind regards,
and best wishes to you all for the future.

This is truly sad news. Thanks for being here this long, and the great moderation, not an easy job.

Dunno what we'll do in cyclone season. cry

A shame really. For me,- I won't ever go to the WZ site again,- and for that matter, Fairfax and all it's publications can get f**ked too.
Plenty more weather sites would be happy to take in the WZ refugees.

I am sure some would pay a small fee to pay for a good forum with paid staff

I would definitely pay a small fee. Used to pay $10/pa for a car forum a few years back. It was voluntary, but gave you special access to a members area. I could definitely manage $10 a year, possibly $20. Not a lot, but about all I could manage, although I might consider more, if we really had to in the beginning at least, if it meant the difference between having a forum or not.

It would be great if we could save the data, but if we don't we can build again, even if we start small. In a way small might not be a bad thing. IMHO.

Same.

Also was any reason given for why the forum is closing? New owners etc?

Glad to see you & sundry are having a go, Mick.
I've been paying $18 per 3 months for WZ Pro extras for years now. I used to drop back during dry season, but for the last 5 or so years, I just let it run.
Another, say, $5 a month won't break the bank.

A few thoughts...

We only have til the 29th July. Talk about short notice, not even 4 weeks. Feels like a lack of respect for what we've built.

If we run out of time, I'm happy to PM the mods my email address.

Anyone else remember the days of yahoo groups? I'm still a member of the Cairns-Tableland Freecycle group.

I don't know how hard or how long it takes to build a new forum, but we could use yahoo groups until we get something established. It would give us breathing space, so we don't lose contact with each other.

WZ is terrible to read on a phone, the font is all different sizes, erratically big & small, in the Reply field the font is tiny. So it will be great to have a forum optimised for mobile.

I certainly is "short notice" a lot will come back from their annual hibernation to find the forums are no longer here! Is it because forums are now classed as dinosaurs, thanks to "social media"?
i for one wont be going to any of those "weather" related sites on face book. Never have, never will!

YS I won't be going to Facebook either.
I do use twitter, but purely as a news source.

I much prefer a proper forum.

All that we have been told is that with the advent of social media and changes in the way people conduct discussions, it is hard to justify the case to invest time and money to keep the forums going.

I've seen that many forums have declined, but not all of them. There's still a place for dedicated forums like this. I like the semi anonymity here. As a single old woman living on my own I don't want to broadcast my ID and location, like on FB. I've felt safe on WZ & quite happy to show my location here, and of course location is prime importance discussing weather.

If you guys wish to transition to a proper forum, ski.com.au is building a dedicated tropical sub forum (despite the name, there's been quite a tropical presence there for quite sometime).

https://www.ski.com.au/xf/forums/the-tropics.81/

Just a thought

OMG a little bit of rain -- for all of about 30 seconds. I must try to remember to check the gauge and see if there's a quarter of a millimetre... that's if it's not mud.

Why do you persist with a tiny phone screen ?
I thought you had a laptop. That would be heaps better than the phone.
More so if you hooked the laptop up to a 24" monitor.

Well eat a sh!t !!!

Have not been on here for a little while and I come back to this terrible news. I have learned so much over the years through this forum and have absolutely enjoyed every moment. It is very disappointing.

Big thanks to Mick and Raindammit, Who have been there my entire time on the forum. Feel like your both a pair of old mates.

Just wont be the same on these rainy mornings without trolling through posts with my cup of coffee.

For what itís worth, 20mm overnight. Cool, rainy, and just a tad sad really.😢
