The change that Long Term GFS shows for EASTER is BIG, a huge field of coolness. That far out, the model might be way off the mark BUT it might be right too.

Afternoon people's , Hobart has had a pretty cool day and only topping out at 18.8c . It's been a long time coming but after this weekends warm spell it looks finally we may get back to average for a change. Should be a sweaty one tomorrow 25c and cloudy .

Observed this around midday. Looked a little like it may have been smoke haze causing it. Anyone see this or have seen it in the past? What causes this? Looked pretty cool at the time. Photo doesn't do it justice. You get the idea though.

Yes have seen similar at times over the years. Often in fog, sometimes in high cloud. Also when flying it's quite common to see a little round rainbow following the plane (with a plane shape/shadow in it), shows up on the clouds on the "shadow" side.

The ring around the moon is well known to many people but a ring around the sun seems to be seen less often. Smoke seems a reasonable possibility as well. smile

MH - enjoy that easing of the temps!! Well overdue.

130mm at Eddystone Point since 9am yesterday, far north east copping it. Models picked it, but picked it late. Light rain across most of the rest of Tas, but generally less than 5mm.

Gee that's a lot of rain. Shame it's not more widespread in the east.

Still, at least it's precip in some form. smile

Was a very humid day in Hobart today and temps stayed around 23c . Still over average but bearable , currently around 21c and an amazing 86% humidity. Forecast is for warmish weekend and more chance of showers now . The new forecast for next week has Thurs and Friday in at 25 and 26c, which I'm finding hard to believe as I thought this weekend would have been it. So the warmth isn't going anywhere just yet, I do see the other States on the Mainland are set to continue the heat as well , pushing well into the 3rd week of March.

Damn heat monster keeping those fingernails in!!

I think though that at least it shouldn't be any warmer than that. At least not 30 smile

Late next week, the models vary a bit BUT GFS has a cold change (540 line) just on the south of Tassie. Access varies the type of system to a low pressure centre. The Access model (if it was correct) may result in cool conditions and possibly decent rain. All depending on where it forms and then tracks. Too far north worse than a bit further south.

Either way Fri/Sat & maybe Sunday could be interesting to watch down there (Access wise).

Whereas EC & GFS looking at a more traditional cold change on Thursday/Friday. NW winds bringing warmth on Thursday but turning to the SW as Friday evolves. If this model is near the mark, some snow quite possible on the southern peaks. smile

MH - get yourself up to Mt Wellington on Friday night for a bit of fresh air!! grin

Morning all,

Up at Great Lake sitting in front of the fire outside, waiting for the billy to boil!
Now that's the life!!!!☺
9 degrees atm, 21.0 yesterday.
Went swimming in what's left of Great Lake yesterday, had lots of fun going down the white water with the kids from the power station at Tods corner.
Not enough water for my fat backside to kayak down though!! But the kids had a great time.
One advantage to there being very little water in the Lake, the river was 500m long compared with the normal 200m.😀

Had a brief thunderstorm here at Great Lake on Saturday arvo, 1.8mm.

Had 4.8mm down home yesterday morning with drizzle and plenty of fog.

The weather is changing for the better!!

I have been in shorts all weekend at Great Lake which is unusual, especially at 11pm at night, with a temp of 14 degrees.

Before we know it we will be wishing for our first 20 degree day of spring!!!!😀

Welcome to Hobart's evening report , and who stole Summer ?
Just got back from going out for a curry at North Hobart , geez an under vest , flannelette shirt , puffer vest and jeans and of course a felt hat for the baldy head. The wind is blowing straight up Elizabeth Street and cuts right through you. Wow what a turn around , currently 14c feels like 12.3c wind at 35kmr from the SSW. I'm sort of looking forward to Thursdays 29 laugh

You idiot!! grin grin

Yes I remember walking to walk down Criterion St to the shop on a cold morning, ALWAYS a breeze going up the streets in the shadow of the buildings, they were cold mornings smile Be careful what you wish for!! smile You might just get it. grin

Access/EC & GFS still varying re the changes this week. EC & GFS still going for a "traditional" shaped change but ACCESS is going for the formation of a low pressure system. It's scenario not as cold and plenty of precip in the West of the state.

EC/GFS have possible flakeage on southern peaks around Thursday/Friday

HOWEVER, GFS turns the change into a low cell (similar to Access) BUT immediately after it crosses Tassie. Today that model says the SE of the state will cop a heap of rain and wind.

Access goes for a low forming west of Tassie, GFS says East of Tassie, EC doesn't say much at all at this stage re a "low".

Just going to wait and see what actually happens. Looks like someone will get quite wet but who? smile

Dave (SF) sounds like a fun weekend up there mate. Enjoy.

Gee I can't remember such a slow arrival of real Autumn really, I know it would have had similar events somewhere in the past but boy talk about an Indian Summer!!.

Must feel like a lovely change down there today compared to some of the weather of late.

Latest reading at 3:20pm is 15.2 in Hobart, with a max today so far of only 16.0 at 2:35pm

A far more autumn like day today, the days are rapidly shortening, dark in the mornings when we get up at 6.

Looks like our monthly dose of rain Thursday night/Friday. Just to keep me out there pushing the mower around...

Late evening all , Hobart did get to a brilliant 16c today and felt much colder working outside and certainly got the old nose running.
Thursday is still looking pretty warm and talk about chalk and cheese weather. Problem now is I have half dirty warm clothes and a chair full of half dirty Summer clothes. Friday is still saying it's going to be pretty wet and lets hope it comes off.
Next week looks like being average temps or just above so it will be interesting to see the figures as the end of the month rolls around. Still sitting in record March territory after this cool down event. Hey Dave nothing changes and I'll bet Criterion St still looks the same the day you last saw it. However the Adjoining Mathers Lane has been refurbished and looks like an inner city hipster hangout complete with 3 new trendy coffee joints. I'm too old to be a hipster but the coffee and artwork/graffiti is worth the visit and is very Melbourne.

cheers MH - I always liked my coffeee from the Criterion St Cafe. Mathers is a funny little laneway and now obviously even more so smile

Next time I get down I will have a wander about as I often do. smile

This sort of weather a real "laundry problem" for you, yes I reckon it would be. smile It's like our office here in say another fortnight, we will have heaters going in the morning but air con cooling in the arvo. smile

Looking at the models again for the next few days, Access has delayed the formation of that low. Unfortunately the models seem to have sent the cooler air ever so slightly further south BUT, more of them giving the SE of the state a better chance of decent precip.

It should still be nice and cool on Friday, I think still a chance of some minor flakeage on higher southern peaks. Hopefully a half decent rain night on Thursday and into Friday.

Dan - you need a frost to knock the grass back - shouldn't be too many weeks away, maybe a month. We expect our first one by Anzac Day up here.

I think the temperature step down is finally underway for autumn. About bloody time hey lads!! grin

Actually I'm well overdue for a Tassie fix, need to find some flight specials over the next few months!!!

Only trouble is that we may not want to leave Tassie if we get there. We keep looking and wondering how to do it!!

Dan, how many bedrooms in your hacienda? smile You keep dodging a trip up here so I will have to come and annoy you!! smile

By the way, any of you lot in this group are welcome to stay if ever up this way, just pm me. smile

Enough to put you up (and put up with you) for a bit. One less spare bedroom in several months... expecting a new addition to the weatherzone family.
