The stars were out earlier but now it's occasional showers here and about10. The rainfall total at Sydney OH since 9:00AM has slowly built up to 6 mm but the showers aren't penetrating far inland.

Today's Sydney max was14.1. That seems cold but unremarkable, but assuming that it is not exceeded by 9:00 tomorrow, it would be colder than any day last year, in fact the coldest since 22/8/2016, when 13.8.

Still steady rain here. Will probably continue for the next few hours looking at the radar

Rain overnight was concentrated on the coastal fringe, especially around Jervis Bay (including a couple of 50+ mm readings) and the 'bulge' North of Newcastle (with a reading of 117 mm at Bungwahl near Buledelah.

Sydney received 9 mm and Chatswood (surprisingly) only 4 mm. There's an orange blob moving up from the South about to hit which will add to these.

Here's a webcam view of Sydney a little while ago:

Well that's almost how the ranges are intended to operate.

It's 50% chance of more than the lower end, and 25% more than the higher end.

So the lower end is a reasonable expectation according to the BOM too.

That's stupid. No one would reasonably expect there to be a 50% chance of not reaching the lower bound. It should be 25-50-25. Who dreams up this stuff?

Some very useful steady rain overnight here in Shellharbour. There was even some rumbles this morning.

Should have been a wake up to to the favourable mid level shear which is taking the rain from storms that have developed over the lapse rate offshore to land.

Hats off to ACCESS which picked it up - I was skeptical but damn it smashed down this morning. Looks like more to come but backing off by lunch. Half of our June rainfall fell in the last 2 days, pity there wasn't more over the escarpment but should see some useful inflows.

Can see the really dark nimbostratus to the east of Sydney. Some really heavy downpours for sure. Hopefully the dam catchment gets a really good raindump.

Totally overcast, cold (9.8 at OH) with steady light to moderate rain. There's been 4 mm at Chatswood since 9:00 (seems like more), bringing the 'Event' total so far to 30 mm. No big deal more more than received in the prior 6 weeks. For OH, nearly 10 mm has been received since 9:00, bringing the event total to 39 mm and still growing.

The BOM is still going for a 17 max for this afternoon, which suggests clearing and some sunny breaks, to be followed by a cold (and clear) night tonight.

After that, it quickly warms to what looks like an extended warm spell starting on the weekend (low to mid 20 maxima for Sydney).

Ground observations not really matching the intensity being indicated by the TH radar, in fact that has been the case for this entire event thus far.

Would this have anything to do with the radar picking up the precipitation as snow higher in the atmosphere, or have they recently made adjustments to the radar?

Lovely fluffy towers just offshore the coast to east of Shellharbour, would make great picture and possible waterspout patrol, but stuck here at work.

Was just about to post the same thing - decent towers too! Hopefully that coastal storm risk comes off!

I agree that the Terry Hills radar is over-reading. The Appin radar seems to match the actual rainfall experience more closely. So does the Newcastle radar, although it's a bit distant. Since 9:00, Sydney has had 12 mm, nearly all of which fell before Noon. That's 3.7 mm per hour, hardly 'orange' intensity.

We had some sunny breaks after Noon, allowing the temperature to rise to 15 after being stuck close to 10 all morning. The showers are still marching Northwards off the coast, however, lingering a bit longer than I was expecting. They seem to be falling apart once they hit land.

It is well and truly cold enough, now 11.9C at 6pm, and going down to 3C tonight.
25.8mm so far recorded from this event at Maitland Airport, though I suspect would be significantly more at Belmore Bridge.
