A cold front will move across NSW during tomorrow (Monday June 3), bringing strong, cold S-SW winds in its wake. A low will form in the Tasman off the South coast on the 3rd and drift Northwards before rapidly moving away towards NZ on Wednesday 5th.

Snow is forecast on the Central and Southern ranges down to 900 metres from tomorrow afternoon, extending to the Northern ranges overnight.

Rainfall will be basically coastal, dropping away rapidly as you move inland.

Code:
Forecast rainfall totals:

Sydney 38 - 73
Wollongong 43 - 85
Newcastle 35 - 67
Penrith 10 - 25
Bathurst 3 - 8
Canberra 3 - 9

The action is expected to be over by Thursday 6th, apart from some lingering coastal showers. I've allowed the extra day just in case.

Thanks Steve for starting.

What I've found enticing about this event is the embedded troughs being flung up from the south to the west of the low once it forms in the Tasman.
The BOM 4-dayer shows this well today.
I'm expecting Monday evening and Tuesday to be feeling particularly cold.

Good thread, I’m not convinced as yet re the ECL - 50km further east than progged and we will see nothing other than some wind and overcast conditions.

TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST

Severe Weather Warning
for DAMAGING WINDS and DAMAGING SURF

For people in parts of Mid North Coast, Hunter, Metropolitan, Illawarra and South Coast Forecast Districts.

Issued at 4:30 pm Sunday, 2 June 2019.

DANGEROUS COASTAL WINDS AND WAVES FROM LATE MONDAY

Weather Situation: A front crossing the state today will deepen into a low pressure system off the southern half of the coast later Monday. A trough associated with the low will sweep from south to north during Tuesday, generating vigorous southerly winds and dangerous surf.

DAMAGING WINDS averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 90 km/h are expected to develop along the coastal fringe in the far south from late Monday and extend north during Tuesday. Winds are expected to ease from the south later Tuesday.

HEAVY SURF, in excess of 5 metres in the surf zone, may lead to localised damage and coastal erosion along the south coast from late Monday, then extend further north during Tuesday. People should stay well away from the surf and surf exposed areas. South facing beaches will be the most affected.

Locations which may be affected include Seal Rocks, Newcastle, Gosford, Sydney, Wollongong and Batemans Bay.

Seems like that negative SAM and it's lag is finally kicking into gear, and for a change those warm SSTs will provide some fuel.

Yr.no (ECMWF) still has on and off snow showers for here in Bowral beginning at 7pm tomorrow and possibly continuing until about 1am Tuesday! Will be very interesting how it all pans out due to the sheer amount of moisture which will be around at these low temps. I've seen worse setups produce big snowfalls in odd places

I was puzzled about the lack of discussion regarding this event but I was refreshing the old thread!

It's certainly a pretty odd system coming up. GFS meanwhile would suggest it's too warm to snow in the SH by the 850mb temps but some of these types of systems can be unimpressive at 850mb but very cold at 900mb like 14th October 2014 when Lithgow and Blackheath got a lot of (unforecasted) snow. The way the cold pool moves in more from the west and pushes to the NT's rather than a classic SW change is a little bit July 2015-ish too. Speaking of the NT's, it seems to be pretty likely that Armidale and surrounds will get a few cm's of snow.

I think I'm just going to sit back and watch it unfold. Being such a complex system, the models are probably having trouble especially GFS which isn't overly high resolution compared with say Access-R.

Interesting that the WZ hourly forecast shows thunderstorms in a lot of locations I've checked for Tuesday morning including the coast and tablelands.

Bit of rain overnight. A bit of steam now from the sun coming up.

Looking up Windy.ty looks like EC reckons .5cm of snow for Bowral. Would be interesting what occurs tomorrow morning especially for areas around Robertson which reaches above 800m ASL.

20.2mm recorded to 9am Sunday, but only 0.2mm since then.
This is despite some good solid showers yesterday in Maitland, I had to go to East Maitland and then to Bunnings -where there was definitely a few mm of rain, but obviously did not hit the Airport some 10Ks away - which only recorded 0.2mm or a trace.
This is one of the hazards with the cost cutting procedures of moving weather stations to airports.

I see the WxZone forecast has upgraded overnight - i'm liking the structure of the upper low so far on satpic - defined cyclonic curve - not the usual sloppy mess we see slipping over land.

Forever hopeful as we desperately need rain and some interesting weather but still skeptical as location location location all too critical with these events.

Currently in Sunny Corner, 3’c is the present temperature. Had a few showers roll through but the temperature would not drop any further. Bit of sleet in the showers but that’s about it. Looking at Weatherunderground I cannot see any lower temperatures so maybe a while if at all before it snows.
Heading back to Sydney now.

Radar looks good for areas like kangara walls. Which is at a similar elevation as mt trickett. Id say it would do well tommorow morning aswell when the moisture streams in from thr ocean.

Watched that storm drop a few spits in the city and that was it. Saw my pws register a couple of mms and the accompanying cold downburst. Now watching a few CGs off the coast.

The Thredbo cams are showing some meaty falls at the moment. Not sure if this is setting in or a passing snow shower. The interesting part is the wind direction; opposite to last week's event.

Funny that the temperature drops when I get back to Sydney. Down to around 2’c at Yetholme according to the Weather Underground PWS. Should snow for sure around Sunny Corner later this afternoon tonight.
What are the chances of seeing snow on the eastern side of the Blue Mountains tonight into tomorrow (Blackheath / Mt Tomah) ?

This event really doesn't seem to be boding too well with me; much of the moisture's steering north-eastwards to the CT's, mostly leaving me with drizzle flakes. whistle

Quite cold, however; 1.4° C at 3:27 PM.

Currently 12.2 degs.

If you look at the synoptic maps from Metservice in NZ, there are constantly warm fronts plotted in eastern Aus, BOM generally don't plot them, but they are there.

3.4C with light rain falling here in Bowral with the temp still dropping. Probably some sleet mixed in with it

2.8mm at Dee Why with the temp bottoming out at 12.3c in that showr/storm! Brrr.

Tomorrow morning looking super windy, especially up on our hill Kizz. What is the highest wind gust you've recorded?

68 Km/h is my best. 5/6/2016.

Check out Richmond's 48-hourly predictions on WZ at 3:00 AM (2753, Western Sydney); 4° C with rain! shocked

Very sceptical of such conditions eventuating, but that one gave me a right shock, to say the least.

It's possible.
Completely clear skies here and just 6.3 degs atm. No wind. I'm only about 20 k's from Richmond.
Richmond is currently 6.8 and winds reading calm.
Obviously under these conditions, when the rain starts, it will warm up. But if it stays calm until then, Richmonds temp could well dip to 4 or lower as the rain arrives.
Not beyond the realms of possibility.

Clear skies here also. The forecast for Sydney for toninght has just been updated:

"Partly cloudy. Medium (60%) chance of a shower or storm with small hail about the southern and central suburbs. Winds westerly 15 to 20 km/h"

You often see 'small hail' in the Melbourne forecast but not Sydney's. I'm not entirely sure where the "central suburbs" are - I assume that they include areas near the CBD. In any case, it looks like the 27 day dry spell here won't go to a 28th day.

There's also a sheep graziers' warning out which, unusually, includes the Metropolitan area. Lock up your sheep.

I've been watching that one and it's been really weird.
That is the heavy shower that I reported earlier this afternoon that I recieved.
It came down from the north and headed down to Oatley (on the radar) and then just hung around and is now heading back north/northwest and is rebuilding. Strange days indeed.

If you were to believe the TH radar we should be under a moderate to heavy rainfall band, but I would describe it as light to moderate rainfall atm.

I wouldn't want to be driving around the Central Tablelands at the moment, it looks 'interesting'.

Goulburn got about 10mm of precip will temps were just above zero, not bad for 640m! Much warmer there now though but the rain has stopped.

Very heavy rain here and I'm sure I could hear periods of hail falling on the roof earlier.

Will be interesting to see blue mtns and oberon area reports shortly as i am sure they would have received decent snow.

Incredible system currently 6.7’c, wind chill of 5.5’c, and 13.5mm of rain since midnight on my PWS Parklea weather.
It is not often you see rain with temperatures this cold in the Sydney Basin.
Looking at temperatures in key areas, at 6:15am
Bowral, Moss Vale, Robertson, Knights Hill are all sitting on 5’c so no chance of snow in these places.
All the action seems to around the Blue Mountains Katoomba / Blackheath with 0’c temperatures, but it looks like things are warming there too as the warmer maritime air is getting inserted into the system. At one stage there was 2’c temperatures and rain down to Woodford according to multiple Weatherunderground PWS so freezing level would have been around 800-900m early on the Blue Mountains.

Any reports from Goulburn/Crookwell?

Anyway Ulladulla scored a 128km/h gust around 5am, shame we also don't have any members down that way.

Live Traffic shows several warnings for "Alpine Conditions Snow & Ice" in the Blue Mountains area, with the Great Western Highway closed in both directions at Katoomba:

There's also a an "Alpine Conditions" warning for the Hume Motorway (Goulburn to Mittagong) and a couple near Armidale.

EDIT: that warning banner across the top relates to a truck fire near Campbelltown. There's also a jack-knifed truck near Mt Victoria. It won't be good on the roads this morning.

Really missing out on all the fun here, it seems. frown

I only do well with classic SW polar fronts, so couldn't have expected much better anyways—but not this poor! Not even Cabramurra received anywhere near as much snowfall as the Oberon Plateau; in fact, reckon I've actually gotten even more than Cabramurra meself.

Good to hear of all this snow, puts a smile on my face. It's also not often that there is rain in Sydney with the temp below 8c.

If this thick cloud deck remains will it even reach 14°C in Sydney??

Some wild weather here in Shellharbour overnight. Rain and small hail blasting my east facing bedroom window.

We had two sperate periods of rain, the first just around midnight was steady with moderate winds. It stopped for an hour or so and dissappointmnet set in.

However a loud boom of thunder that seriously rolled for almost 30 seonds heralded the start of the real stuff around 3-4am. Gale force wind and heavy rain.

Nice snow pics DVC.

----

Things have eased right off here, with little or no rain in the last hour or so. The rain has moved North to the Central Coast and lower Hunter. Most of Sydney received about 20 mm to 9:00, with higher falls in the SW. The Illawarra and its hinterland have been the main focus, with falls of 60+ mm from about Kiama to Ulladulla and falls of 40 mm around Goulburn.

There's still heavy rain out to sea coming, which is starting to come ashore in the Eastern suburbs, so there might be more to come.

Nowadays when I see the BOM's rainfall predictions I take the lower one as the actual possible maximum. So for around here they were predicting 20mm - 45mm, and we got the new 'maximum' of 20mm.

Well that's almost how the ranges are intended to operate.

It's 50% chance of more than the lower end, and 25% more than the higher end.

So the lower end is a reasonable expectation according to the BOM too.

Scuddy showers on and off here today, as with some strong wind gusts. Looking like this event may be almost done but ACCESS still likes some heavy showers/rain as the low moves away and the flow becomes more southerly with a touch of e'erly in it.

There are a few blue sky patches here also and the Sun's trying to come out. Apart from a few wind-blown sprays, it hasn't rained for a few hours, although the radar is still showing showers along the coast.

The water's flowing over the Lane Cove wear for the first time since March, just 8 cm or so. It's been 12 - 13° on the car thermometer.

I would interpret a forecast of 20mm-45mm to be what we could expect, ie rainfall somewhere between 20mm to 45mm, not more and not less. It is not often that we get anywhere near the top forecast here, and most of the time it is below the minimum range.

OK, it may mean something else, but this is what got the BOM into serious trouble in the deadly 1998 Sydney to Hobart when the BOM forecast a wind range, and the sailors assumed that the top forecast range was the limit to the maximum wind speed, how wrong the sailors were! The BOM never fully explained that gusts 40% above the top wind speed forecast could happen.

Snow on the Barringtop Tops, as is to be expected with any major cold outbreak, given the 1500 metre plus elevation up there:

https://www.winghamchronicle.com.au/stor...-of-the-season/

Not a snow chaser per se, but no doubt a good fall from this event.
Some huge surf and swells as well, would be well worth a look.

The stars were out earlier but now it's occasional showers here and about10°. The rainfall total at Sydney OH since 9:00AM has slowly built up to 6 mm but the showers aren't penetrating far inland.

Today's Sydney max was14.1°. That seems cold but unremarkable, but assuming that it is not exceeded by 9:00 tomorrow, it would be colder than any day last year, in fact the coldest since 22/8/2016, when 13.8°.

Rain overnight was concentrated on the coastal fringe, especially around Jervis Bay (including a couple of 50+ mm readings) and the 'bulge' North of Newcastle (with a reading of 117 mm at Bungwahl near Buledelah.

Sydney received 9 mm and Chatswood (surprisingly) only 4 mm. There's an orange blob moving up from the South about to hit which will add to these.

Here's a webcam view of Sydney a little while ago:

Well that's almost how the ranges are intended to operate.

It's 50% chance of more than the lower end, and 25% more than the higher end.

So the lower end is a reasonable expectation according to the BOM too.

That's stupid. No one would reasonably expect there to be a 50% chance of not reaching the lower bound. It should be 25-50-25. Who dreams up this stuff?

Some very useful steady rain overnight here in Shellharbour. There was even some rumbles this morning.

Should have been a wake up to to the favourable mid level shear which is taking the rain from storms that have developed over the lapse rate offshore to land.

Hats off to ACCESS which picked it up - I was skeptical but damn it smashed down this morning. Looks like more to come but backing off by lunch. Half of our June rainfall fell in the last 2 days, pity there wasn't more over the escarpment but should see some useful inflows.

Can see the really dark nimbostratus to the east of Sydney. Some really heavy downpours for sure. Hopefully the dam catchment gets a really good raindump.

Totally overcast, cold (9.8° at OH) with steady light to moderate rain. There's been 4 mm at Chatswood since 9:00 (seems like more), bringing the 'Event' total so far to 30 mm. No big deal more more than received in the prior 6 weeks. For OH, nearly 10 mm has been received since 9:00, bringing the event total to 39 mm and still growing.

The BOM is still going for a 17° max for this afternoon, which suggests clearing and some sunny breaks, to be followed by a cold (and clear) night tonight.

After that, it quickly warms to what looks like an extended warm spell starting on the weekend (low to mid 20 maxima for Sydney).

Ground observations not really matching the intensity being indicated by the TH radar, in fact that has been the case for this entire event thus far.

Would this have anything to do with the radar picking up the precipitation as snow higher in the atmosphere, or have they recently made adjustments to the radar?

Lovely fluffy towers just offshore the coast to east of Shellharbour, would make great picture and possible waterspout patrol, but stuck here at work.

I agree that the Terry Hills radar is over-reading. The Appin radar seems to match the actual rainfall experience more closely. So does the Newcastle radar, although it's a bit distant. Since 9:00, Sydney has had 12 mm, nearly all of which fell before Noon. That's 3.7 mm per hour, hardly 'orange' intensity.

We had some sunny breaks after Noon, allowing the temperature to rise to 15 after being stuck close to 10 all morning. The showers are still marching Northwards off the coast, however, lingering a bit longer than I was expecting. They seem to be falling apart once they hit land.

It is well and truly cold enough, now 11.9C at 6pm, and going down to 3C tonight.
25.8mm so far recorded from this event at Maitland Airport, though I suspect would be significantly more at Belmore Bridge.

It certainly was cold today 12.3c was my max, temp mainly hovered between 10c and 11c for the best part of the day.
There's also been a bit of precipitation too, 123mm to 9am this morning and about 15mm since, monthly total nudging 200mm.

I was wondering when you'd pop up!!

It was clear there was some decent fall's up your way. And, I too have been surprised at how cool daytime temps have stayed, until there was a small bit of sunshine today. It's been the same here.

Anyway, this event is pretty much over so it's now on to more important things.

………… GO THE BLUES!!!!

My forecast next week (BOM, Braemar Bay NSW) shows a maximum high of 11° C, with a maximum of 9° C for Cabramurra, which are nothing at all special for June. Certainly shows how utterly weak the Subtropical Ridge really is this far south.

Weatherzone/BOM have a tendency to over-forecast (hmmm, I wonder why!), and the Weather.com forecasts show a maximum of only 9° C for Anglers Reach and 8° C for Cabramurra next week; as for Sydney, 23° C instead of 25° C.

Then after that little "heatwave", back to low single digits for me, i.e. 4° C highs and drizzle/sleet combinations.

Last winter with mean winter temperatures at Observatory Hill below the 1961-1990 average was 1997. Last one below the all-years average was 1978 (although the all-years average is dragged down a bit by the cooler site pre-1917).

Event Wrap-up

After an interesting fees days, it's back to clear skies, warm afternoons and light breezes, so I thought I'd put together a bit of a wrap-up. Other posters might want to add their own observations / highlights..

Rain
Mostly coastal, with falls of 25 mm and above mostly confined to the coastal strip South of Coffs Harbour, extending inland to the Southern Tablelands around Goulburn. There were two small areas of 100+ mm, one near Port Stephens and another near Jervis Bay.

Temperatures: coldest maxima so far this year at many locations, with a number of 12's and 13's in coastal areas. Some locations had their coldest maximum in several years:
- Sydney OH: 14.1 on the 4th, coldest maximum since August 2016.

Snow: Good early season snow in some unexpected places:
- Settled snow in the Central Tablelands above about 900 metres, including Lithgow, Blackheath, Katoomba, Mt Canabolas
- Southern highlands / tablelands: reports of snow at Bowral (700 m) and Goulburn (700 m)
- Snowy Mountains (70 cm at Spencer's Creek)
- Barrington Tops
- Northern Tablelands

Winds: high winds on the 4th.
- Ulladulla 130 km/h
- Wattamolla 119 km/h

Storms:
- Storms reported in many locations with passage of the front on the 3rd
- reports of hail (Goulburn) and small hail (various locations)

Fantastic summary Steve thank you - can I please just note that Goulburn town sits between 620 metres and 650 metres asl. I'm in town 2 blocks from CBD at 640 masl and received estimated 6cm. Snow was still settled on the ground at 12 noon. Airport is 640 masl cheers! also funny that our max that day was 10 deg!
