A cold front and a low set to rapidly intensify in the Tasman Sea will make Tuesday see the main peak of very gusty, much colder SW winds and some sleet or snowfalls possibly extending up to the highest terrain near the QLD/NSW border.

SNOW - As mentioned in some of my earlier posts, while snowfall is still possible (close to 50/50) on the highest terrain near the QLD/NSW border on the Granite Belt on Tuesday, chances look higher the further south you go and should also start earlier
e.g. the usual suspects like Guyra and other higher elevation locations on the northern NSW tablelands are in with a good chance and some areas could get enough to accumulate to a few cm or deeper.

WIND - Very gusty cold W to SW winds are also likely to start increasing from later Monday and peak on Tuesday after the front sweeps across and the low rapidly intensifies in the Tasman Sea.

TEMPS - Tuesday's max temps at many locations in coastal SE QLD may struggle to reach the mid to high teens (and around 8 to 12C on the Granite Belt) so combined with the wind chill factor, it'll definitely feel a lot colder
By Wednesday though, temps are likely to bounce back up closer to the June average.

SE AUSTRALIA IN GENERAL - Along the central and southern parts of the NSW coastal fringe winds could also reach potentially damaging strength together with dangerous seas and enhanced rainfall (which may become heavy in some places, including in eastern and central VIC).

Based on current models, the lowest layer of the atmosphere looks more than cold enough to support snow on the highest parts of the Granite Belt (e.g. EC currently forecasting snow line down to about 800m elevation in that area with 1000-850hpa thickness values dipping below 130dm, 1000-700hpa thicknesses dipping below 539dm. and 850hpa temps around -1C).....
but there's a few potential complicating factors that make me cautious - the relatively shallow moisture by the time the coldest air arrives and the steep north-south temp gradient on the northern flank of the cold pool aloft. The latter is something worth keeping an eye on because even just a small north or south shift in its track can make the difference between a deep more unstable cold airmass and higher snow chances and only a shallow layer of very cold air with lower snow chances.

In a nutshell, I'd rate SE QLD snow chances in the "it's a gamble but still possible" category and snow chances in places like Guyra in the "likely" category.

1st image above - GFS max gusts between Mon and Wed (but main peak for us looks to be around Tuesday).
2nd image above - EC 3-day snowfall amounts (but main peak looks to be around early Tuesday as well).

Brushing the cobwebs off my wind chill chart for tomorrow, so at Brisbane’s maximum temperature of 18 degrees and estimated wind speed of 25 - 40 kph should give an apparent temperature of about 11 - 12 that is with no additional heating and a fixed relative humidity of 70%.

Might give the bike ride a miss tomorrow.

BOM's SWW tomorrow for Damaging Winds and Damaging Surf extends up to Hat Head, about 15kms to the south of here.
The low looks like it may fling up a bit of shower activity during the evening, probably a couple millimetres at best (with the bulk of the precip expected to be offshore once it gets this far north tomorrow).

Armidale Airport (1079m) at 12:20am is 0.6°C with precip falling. Should begin snowing in Guyra (around 1330m) soon with precip moving in.

Any reports of sleet/snow in stanthorpe? They have had 0.6mm of precip there this morning with temperatures around 2C so shouldn't be far off.

Hey Ken awesome videos of the snow flurry at Eukey you received before and after the sunrise. Nice catch. Good old Stanthorpe delivers once again. Good to hear you on MMM this morning too. Well done.

If anyone is interested Ken has posted the 2 videos on the South Brisbane Storms FB page.

Snow falls near Stanthorpe as wind gusts lower temperature

RELATED STORY: 'A winter wonderland': Thick snow blankets parts of QueenslandRELATED STORY: Winter chill hits Queensland towns with coldest May morning on record
Snow is falling near Stanthorpe on the Southern Downs this morning, as wind gusts lower the apparent temperatures across southern Queensland.

Key points

The "feels like" temperature in Toowoomba and parts of the Granite Belt were below freezing
Possible wind gusts of up to 55 kilometres per hour will keep apparent temperatures low
While a small number of snow flakes were recorded, locals say they were too small to settle
A wind chill caused the apparent temperature at Toowoomba to plummet to -5 degrees at 6.00am, and -4.4 in Applethorpe at 6:30am.

Meanwhile, at the Brisbane Airport the apparent temperature is 1.9 degrees, while the actual temperature is 10.5 degrees due to 46 kilometres per hour wind gusts.

Snowfall is also being recorded in the Blue Mountains and Central Tablelands in New South Wales, with heavy snow in alpine areas.

The Bureau of Meteorology said snow was rare in Queensland, but does happen from time to time near the border, with the last significant snowfall in 2015.

Senior Forecaster Sam Campbell said possible wind gusts of up to 55 km/h in the south-east today would keep apparent temperatures low across the south of the state.

"Pretty windy there and you factor that all in and you get a wind chill that's going to keep that apparent temperature down to six to 10 degrees," Mr Campbell said.

"So if you're out and about today it's going to feel really cold, really dry and quite unpleasant for the most part if you're in that wind."

Sleet momentarily turned into snowflakes at Eukey, south of Stanthorpe.

VIDEO: Snow falls near Eukey in SE Queensland (ABC News)
Weather enthusiast Ken Kato said he saw snow falling at Eukey around 5.00am.

"Noticed a few flakes driving up here and it turned to sleet and it was sleeting for about maybe 10 minutes and then some flurries of pure snowflakes started coming down," he said.

Matt Hibberd from Lawdogs Australia said it was near zero at his place at The Summit, and the flakes got bigger throughout the morning.

"Perfect snow temps and we have flakes, white flakes dancing in the air, just not enough to settle on the ground as yet," he said.
"Kids have been told to abandon uniforms and dress as warm as you can at school today (as if anyone will go).

"Our dogs are all in the office with the heaters and fires roaring."

Gusty WSW winds must be playing havoc with aircraft landing at GC this morning.

737-8 Auk to GC just had a go-around.

I imagine Brisbane Int. is an ideal location for an airport topography wise, given its coastal location on a wide coastal plain, unlike Coolangatta with ranges adjacent to airport.

I couldn’t go either. I was talking about it on Sunday to see if my wife and I could shuffle things around but it was impossible to do. Guyra has massive falls as well but I wouldn’t have gone that far this time.

Lol that's because I was. I have a nasty cold so my voice was almost gone by then, the windchill factor was brutal, and I could hardly move my mouth and speak properly due to the cold... my jaw was numb. The reporters who were there were the same... loss of sensation in fingers, etc.

The models absolutely nailed the timing again down to the nearest hour (min thickness levels through most layers were forecast to be about 7am which is exactly when the snowfall peaked) so was able to precisely time when we had to get up and go there. No accumulations though apart from on my jacket due to the still "warm" surfaces.

At 2pm, Brisbane city was 16.3C with a feels like temp of 12C.
In Toowoomba, it was 7.4C with a feels like temp of -1.1C.
In Applethorpe, it was 4.8C.
Gusts up to 54km/hr were also been recorded at Brisbane and Archerfield Airports.

It remained overcast, bleak, drizzly and cold after the snow for most of the day we were in Stanthorpe.

Above is a shot I took a shot of Stanthorpe's big thermometer at 10:15 this morning.

In terms of snowfall (whether or not it's produced accumulations on the ground), there's been many other years where snow's been observed in SE QLD.

On average, SE QLD (if you include the Downs) receives one to two snowfalls per year but that can vary a fair bit from year to year e.g. the past half a decade has seen an absence of snowfalls except for 2015.

2015 and 1984 produced the deepest accumulations in the region in more recent decades but there's been a number of big accumulations before then. You can see many past reports here: http://www.weatherarmidale.com/qldsnowtable.htm

Immensely windy today, when I arrived at work in the morning I could barely close the door it was so strong.

Unfortunately 2 of the 3 cups on the anemometer have disappeared somehow, so couldn't get very accurate readings at home. (Not that I'm implying this event is related laugh)

Interesting comment from the list Ken posted:

Quote:
In addition, when sleet is reported at centers such as Wallangarra (840 meters) or Stanthorpe (800 meters), snow
may have fallen unobserved on the surrounding mountains. For example those adjacent to the Donnybrook
State forest, which rise to 1300 meters in altitude. These areas are inaccessible and some distance from habitation.
There have been 26 sleet days in the past 137 years.

Great discussion about snow in Queensland.

Has anybody read/heard First Australian/ Early European settler reports of snow in Qld?

I've heard reports of snow on Biggenden Bluff and Eungella Range but not sure about the veracity.

Hey all, im down in NSW at the moment, thought I would share a photo from yesterdays snow at Shooters Hill, just of Oberon. At least 10-15cm fell here.
Glad to hear northern NSW got some decent falls as well.

Certainly are showers about to west and offshore. That was an awesome afternoon sky - cumulus with some build and fast moving cirrus above that.

After a cold morning around freezing this morning with frost, we now have a good moderate rain falling ATM. Showers have been teasing us for most of the afternoon just to our south. Love the changeable weather pattern ATM. Was in Toowoomba all afternoon yesterday and boy was it cold in the wind!

A couple of snow reports in the Guyra and Surrounds snow thread too: http://forum.weatherzone.com.au/ubbthrea..._ch#Post1500022

Chilly day yesterday with the gusty winds. 0.2mm in the 24hrs to 9am from brief light rain late yesterday afternoon. We were basically as far north as the recordable rain got. Contrasting conditions on the MNC, with the northern MNC getting very little to no rain while the far southern MNC had falls up to 116mm.

Today had some spitting rain, just enough to manage 0.2mm since 9am.
