That is an awesome satellite comparison pic rob g.
Looks like desertification. I would love an animation of that dieoff. Though I am reminded of pics of california dams almost empty, then filled up due to good rain. Hopefully we swing back to the lushness soon.

Penrith today, stinking hot. Some hail in emu. Tomorrow? Even hotter maybe some rain.

Saw some distant lightning way off Southwards about half an hour ago, the first lightning of any sort I've seen in a month - probably the cell off Wollongong. It clouded over this afternoon but it was just anvil stuff. The sun had returned by 6:00 PM.

There's been a certain sameness to the weather in Eastern Sydney so far this month, with a bit more variation inland:

OH maxima 28, 28, 28, 28, 29.
Bankstown: 33, 30, 30, 32, 32
Penrith: 32, 32, 33, 36, 36.

Here's a video from today's storm chase. Hail at Robertson followed by some other storms near Kangaloon and Picton Rd. No close lightning for me today frown

Grumbling thundery shower in Shellahrbour, now passed. I hope we are going to get a bit more rain yet from this system, so dry here.

I thought that the temperatures 'achieved' around Sydney would be today's maxima, but the sun has returned fir now and temperatures are shooting up. Now 38 degrees at Penrith and Richmond, 35-37 elsewhere in Sydney's West.

Can't see any traditional Southerly riding up the coast, although it is cooler South of Sydney, which is affected by cloud and some rain. Maybe there's cooler air gradually filtering through.

Seabreeze hanging on for dear life at my fathers place on the Dee Why Headland, brief surge that lasted only minutes before it took over again. laugh

Loud peals of thunder.

A detailed warning for the cell in Sydney's NW aiming directly for the CBD.

A Fire Warning just issued for the Hunter.

I think that the storms are riding a cooler SW change, more Southerly on the coast. Just reaching the CBD.

I don't think it's the real change though, although I may be wrong.
It's still over 25 at Port Kembla and Kiama and just 15 - 17 further down the south coast. The cooler air is much further south, which will probably coincide with a stronger southerly later on.

I scored some great lightning footage from Wollongong early afternoon, I’ll edit footage tonight and post a link. Fairly high based storms and the first couple weren’t very active but the last one made up for it......

Look forward to seeing your footage LC.

I had thunder and lightning for an hour or so this afternoon, including what sounded like nearby CGs. The rain was mostly light, with a couple of briefly heavy showers. There were no high winds or hail bombs, however.

The lightning's gone, the storms having shifted to the Central Coast and the Hunter, but I just had another light shower. These seem to be backbuilding over Eastern Sydney. The rain hasn't added up to much, only 3 mm at Chatswood. Apart from an isolated 12 mm at Manly, Sydney's falls were mostly under 4 mm. Sydney OH only picked up 1.4 mm.

Hahaha yep the media over-hypes everything these days; as if hail has never happened before. Or storms. Or any sort of weather.

I can't even think of the media reaction if the intense hailstorms of Jan 1947 and Apr 1999 in Sydney ever repeated again.

Two good storms here. Very rare these days. There’s this tinge of smoke in the clouds now. Could that fire at Cessnock updrafted smoke?

Seems like today's high had occured about 6:10 AM this morn', which was 12.7° C...

And now? It is barely over 9° C poke Cabramurra peaked at just 11.9° C this morn', at 6:08 AM as well.

Google's forecasted high for today was 13° C, whilst WZ's Rhine Falls was 16° C; proves that Google is indeed more reliable for me.
