a New Zealand river .. Waiho Bridge, near the town of Franz Josef..has been washed away in a severe rain storm, prompting the authorities to declare a state of emergency in the region.

The storm battered the west coast of New Zealand's South Island, forcing the closure of 300 km of road due to flooding, according to local media reports.

I remember staying a few nights on the beach between the mouth of the Waiho and 5 mile Creek back in the early 80's. Never seen so many sand flies. Be dangerous there at the moment. A lagoon just south of Okarito claimed quite a few lives back in the gold rush days. When it wasn't full, people would shortcut by trekking along the strip of sand where the lagoon meets the sea ( i did this myself a few times). But when the lagoon filled, the sand strip became saturated and people would get stuck in the 'quicksand' and drowned.

The west of Sth Island NZ looks like it going to be hit again in exactly the same area by another atmospheric river and enhanced by an approaching deep westerly belt, cut off low on April 1st

Hi NZers

Have you realised that Fairfax is closing the Weatherzone forums on 29 July? Then read only til November before disappearing completely.

It seems a few of us are moving to The Australian Weather Forum who are very welcoming, and making changes to accommodate so many new members from weatherzone.

I like to keep a track of your weather, especially when our cyclones go all the way south and harass NZ.

Have a look at the site and see what you think, or do you have other established options in NZ?

cheers, Julie
