Close call - a very hairy takeoff from Canberra airport some years ago, Ilyushin IL-76 cargo plane fully laden using ALL the runway. The commentary from the guys in the tower is hilarious!

That is unreal.. had that runway been a few feet shorter or the aircraft heavier, might have been a much different story!

It reminds me strikingly of a similar scenario involving another russian freighter.. the AN-124 lifiting off from YPAD (Adelaide) after delivering its load of formula 1 vehicles and stuff for the GP.. the police closed off Tapleys Hill Rd which runs directly past the end of the runway, each side of it just incase the Antonov didnt make it.. well it was pretty close, the thing only just cleared the perimeter fence by a few feet, I was there at the block point specially to watch it.
