An early Whale sighting!
For anyone who missed a media report, a Southern Right Whale was spotted off Freeman's Knob - Port Elliot on the 20th of Feb. (Southern Rights usually visit between May and October.)

Hi all. Middleton has a Sunday Special today. Two Southern Right Whales off Basham Beach, and one off Middleton Point 400 met. atm. tip - if the Point is busy, turn off at Rose st. Middleton (which is on the right hand side just over the railway line as you head towards Goolwa) and park around on the Esplanade there.
Possibly see the Basham Beach Whales from the Cockle train.

Hi Liz. We were down that way on Thursday and saw the whales at both locations you mentioned.
Armed with our binoculars, it was a real treat. By the way, the Peninsula is looking terrific with all this rain. We stayed at Carrickalinga for the past week and the drive over Victor way via Inman Valley Road and back via Range Road and a couple of the dirt roads between was pretty soggy. Car deliciously muddy!!

Hi red earth, I am glad you enjoyed the Whales.
The Southern Rights are visiting in record numbers and will be here for awhile. With so many whale-watchers around, the Whale Centre had to send out a plea for more volunteers! cheers.

Today is too nice to stay indoors, so I decided to go Whale watching.
Middleton is offering great viewing areas from Surfers Beach through to Basham Beach and there are quite a few active Whales. They are huge!
On arrival I was greeted with a Pec slap display!
The wind is from the NNE with a small line of close to shore surf and then quite a smooth sea which makes viewing of the whales very easy, even without binoculars. (I sat in the car to watch)
Quite a few guys out surfing who no doubt would often glance out the back to see the close whales.
For a quick trip from Adelaide to Middleton, turn at the Goolwa turnoff which is just out of Mt. Compass and it is signposted well for turning off to Middleton. Keep the camera handy early as there is a fabulous view of Goolwa and the River etc from Flagstaff Hill.

If you followed the Whales in this region, you may be interested to know that eight calves were born at Basham's Beach! Whales here were as close as 20 metres to the shore.

Hi everyone. Are you visiting this region soon? With a bit of luck you may sight a whale as a Southern Right has cruised in early. Check out the S.A Whale Centre whale sighting log for more interesting info.

The skipper of the 1770 dive boat spotted 50 whales on his trip to the reef 3 days ago. It is great to see so many whales up and down our coast now. Migaloo the white wale was sppoted crusing past Port Macquarrie Last week and has by now probably reached his winter playground & checking out the babes in the Witsunday's.

yes quite a famous dolphin by the sounds of things, perhaps NZ's own "flipper"? I heard about it on the radio this morning, though to be honest it really was more of a dig at you kiwis than expressing any great sentiment. Apparently moko was famous for assisting with the rescue of some stranded whales.

Like Migaloo is to you guys (and myself, I hail from Brissy) Moko, Opo, Elizabeth the Seal & Pelorus Jack (which the cook strait ferrys emblazoned with).. more than folklore, more than a way of life.. it happens eventually I guess.

Venture on down to the South Coast for the school holidays, as whale sightings continue.
Today a Southern Right was observed at Port Noarlunga, and, on Tuesday at Sellicks Beach.

Hi everyone, just letting you know that a Humpback Whale pod and Southern Right Whales have been observed along this part of the coast recently. Hopefully there will be a sighting to coincide with this weekends Festival.

I saw a White Whale today!!! Actually that is how the Whale Centre described this whale in its log, but to me the colour was a pale grey.
What a fantastic afternoon, for watching up to six whales, so if you can, head for Basham Beach Middleton on the weekend. It seemed, no matter which way you looked, there was a whale.
These whales are moving, so again, check the Whale Cente log or start your day at Middleton. We sat in the car at Basham Beach and had a good view. The Barnacles on some of the Whales can be better viewed with binoculars, but it was just wonderful scanning the sea in front of us and there was plenty to see. Pec slapping, spy hopping, tale display, resting at the surface and blowing and, just cruising in general.
There was a good line of surf closer to the shore, and 400metres out were the nearest whales just so easily seen. Two whales were very close to Fenchman's Rock near Fishermans Bay.
