Yesterday the water was as warm as I can ever recall in the Illawarra. I pretty much know what 70F feels like as that is a fairly typical late summer peak for this area. But yesterday was another 2-3F on top of that. I estimate 72-73F ( 22-23C ).

If it holds it may provide some interesting weather when land temperatures begin to cool in 6-8 weeks.

Hello Thunder.

I hit the surf yesterday morning near Gerringong, and I thought the water temp was 21-22C. It felt quite warm, probrably the warmest its been this summer, though its been warmer in previous years. Last week the Manly Hydrolics showed 26C+ water from Sydney to the QLD border. Its not suprising the water is so warm down here. This spell of warm water actually follows a period of very cold water, atleast down here in the Shoalhaven. At currawong(east of Nowra)2 weeks ago,the surface temp got down to 16-17C,and the water was green and very murky. 16-17C is common in July/August,but its rare in late January! I think this followed a period of strong northeasters.

I have always thought March is the best time for warm water, and even into early April though it depends on the year. Sometimes you can get 20C+ water into early May.

i consider march to have the warmest water.summer can ussually bring some of the coldest water seen all year.March is ussually 22-23c here. The water temp dosent really drop heaps in winter its just the air temp and wind chill that kills.temps under 10c with a moderate westerly would be uncomfortable with out a steamer

The north to south current is the strongest this time of year so that would be pumping some warm water in your direction

That eddy off the Metro - Illawarra - South Coast is certainly keeping the water temps up. Check out the Sydney Bouy reading from MHL. Going back up over 24C off Sydney now.
The CSIRO chart is droolage material for warm water lovers like myself.

I tried out my new steamer last Saturday at North Steyne (because it was new!) and there was definitely no need for it.

i only use a steamer because of the air temp and wind chill.
when its under 10c and 20kt westerly is blowing the water could be 25 and i would still get cold just from the wind.but its those cold temps that make for the nice winds
