I recall that for a few weeks last summer it was up around 24 degrees. That's about as warm as I've ever seen it in the 15 years I've been living in Sydney.

Yeah, probrably 24 degrees. The warmest time of the year for water temps is around March/April.The coolest time I have found is around the September/October period, and sometimes early November.

cool. something i thought of tonight watching footage of a storm at sea...

What happens when a CG hits the ocean? how much of the ocean is electrified? for how long does the charge last? what effect does it have? electricity hitting the water has to do _something_.

Only a small region (under a few hundred metres, if that) is affected by the strike. Salt water is a great conductor, so a great earthing point for the strike. robably cooks a few fish right near the strike too, 'cause all the heat energy has to go somewhere too!

Does anyone know the water temp off the south coast of NSW...do I need to bring a wetsuit on my holiday to Batemans Bay or not?

The water temp down at Batemans is around the 18 degree mark, but being a Victorian you will think you are swimming in tropical waters!
Take a springsuit though, for the windy days and for reef and sun protection!

Well,I surfed at Ulladulla, and Aussie Pipe,on the week-end and the water temperature was 22-23 degrees. It has certainly warmed up in the last 2 weeks waterwise.I saw people surfing in board-shorts.The temperature could be different down near Batemans-bay,due to the different currents.

It wouldent do any harm in taking a spring-suit.

My 18 degrees was a bit of a rough guess going off Sydney Temps. Water temps could well be warmer PT.
Not sure of local conditions down that way, I'll do a bit of investigating and get back to you with some monthly averages 4 Seasons.

Looking at the BoM's marine services, water temps off Bateman's Bay are an extremely cold 20.8C (20.8C because it's just below the 21C contour line). So I would recommend against swimming at all unless you want to catch pneuomonia!!! Water temps are 21-22C off Sydney, and then 25C off Brisbane - small pocket of 26C to the east of Brisbane amd some nice areas of 28-29C over the Coral Sea.

Interestingly, Cairns beaches were closed yesterday due to jellyfish from a sustained, warm northerly current.

Ezza,

my guess-estimate would be around 27C. Last summer in southeast Australia (which as far as we can tell was the warmest in at least 50 years... "our records") saw temperatures the length of the NSW coast in the 26-28C range at various times. While we don't have the records to sustain a historical comparison, such values were 2-4C above normal shocked and very likely records. At one stage, the water temperature off Gabo Island Victoria reached 26C... which, BTW, is the commonly accepted threshold for tropical formation.

For more info take a lookie at http://www.cdc.noaa.gov/map/clim/sst_olr/sst_anim.shtml or http://www.marine.csiro.au/~lband/web_point/
An interesting comparison between the past two years (but for Melbourne) can be found at
http://www.earthsci.unimelb.edu.au/~awatkins/temps.html and http://www.earthsci.unimelb.edu.au/~awatkins/temps.2000.html

Cheers,

David

Water temps here in SA particularly around Victor where I go are srill only about 16. In winter they get as low as 13. The hottest they have been though is up past 24.
