Just looking at the Quikscat returns in the vicinity of TC Willy, and there appears to be a large error between the 12.5km data and the 25km data.

The 25km data shows a broad fetch on Willy's SW flank, with wind speeds close to the centre around 50kts.

However, the 12.5km winds tell a completely different story, with a small but intense band of WNW winds around 50kts in the region bound by 20S, 22S, 108E, 112E.

The difference this would have on the coastline would be quite enormous - such strong wind speeds aimed into this region would produce very large surf between Coral Bay and Pt Headland (and moderate to large waves further south to Canarvon, and further north to Broome). Additionally, the 12.5m resolution has a broad, if somewhat moderate northerly fetch running along the eastern flank of TC Willy.

However, I'm not sure why the same Scatterometer pass would yeild two completely different results?

Looks like this is not an isolated incident - check the latest Quikscat updates - 25km versus 12.5km .

Same again on the latest passes off the east coast. Hard to say exactly what's going on with it. I want to say it's contamination by cloud or something, but it's quite arbitrary as to where the problem occurs.

I sent off an email to Paul Chang but haven't heard back yet. I'm aware of the rain contamination issues with Quikscat and the problems with data on the edges of the swathes, but this is completely different.
