yeah its due to an upwelling effect it's explained in detail on swellnet
SWELL NET cool water info

By Sue Lowe
While spectators at the SCG sweltered, swimmers at some of Sydney's beaches faced mid-winter temperatures.

On Saturday, Bronte Beach lifeguards recorded a biting low of 16.5 degrees, about as cold as it ever gets, and five degrees colder than bathers could have expected for the time of year. At Clovelly yesterday the water temperature was 18 degrees.

"It's frigging cold, but it's good," said Darren Boehm, who claimed to have spent "a good five minutes" in the water. "You've just got to adjust," he said. Matt Phillips, a beach inspector at Clovelly, blamed the icy conditions on north-easterly winds and swell. "When you get a north-easter, the current spins in the opposite direction to what you'd expect and water from the south starts coming in. [Saturday] was the coldest it has been."

Ben Matson, a surf forecaster with coastalwatch.com, said northerly winds also produced an "upwelling effect" in which the ocean's surface water was displaced by colder, deeper water. "People associate northerlies with warm weather, but it actually brings colder water temperatures. We need a solid round of
southerlies," he said.

Olivia Towning and Jaimie Laverty, both aged 10, described their swim at Clovelly as refreshing. "It is quite cold, but when you're in you get used to it," Olivia said. The pair stayed in for half an hour. "It was much colder yesterday," Jaimie said.

The good news, depending on who you talk to, is that warmer water may be on the
way.

Brett Dutschke, meteorologist with The Weather Company, which provides weather reports to broadcast media, said a small area of cold water had been hugging the Sydney coast for the past few days. However, that was likely to be displaced by more inviting, even slightly warm water, at 22 degrees, which is now sitting one to two kilometres off the coast.

But those waiting for peak summer temperatures as high as24 degrees, will have to keep dry until next month or March.

Got to say was a little surprised at how far south the low was when I got up this morning. It’s really ramped up a notch or 2 looking at the satpics/quickscat over the past 6 hours – very impressive – swell is starting to build, an early check and not much over 3ft/4ft just got back and rogues to 6ft/8ft (albeit being torn apart by sticking rotten motherless @#$%^ ESE’ers smile )

G’day br_17,

Been up the coast for a few weeks, tell you what it’s frigging hard to get back into to things.

The mid north coast really got the best of what was on offer over the last few days swell wise.

I reckon one mile will be the pick of the breaks in the Hunter Saturday with swell out of the NE and winds gradually making their way round to the south during the morning. Can’t wait to get in the water after the shocker of a week (and more) we’ve had around here. Bring it on!!

Did you end up getting the tee? Got your email and thought “another zoner… cool”

Might even take a trip up to Birubi tomorrow arvo if I can get off work early enough.

yeah i got the tee thanks man smile
i'l deinately be at one mile on saturday should be going off with SW wind and NE swell point should be good.
Its rare that one mile is the best
birubi may be small on that swell direction mayby to much east in it but the swell is getting in there will be mad left handers on that swell angle.

E swell are generaly the best at birubi

EDIT i normally where my black surf wx shirt to the beach

Yeah, the surf has been crap for weeks. It was quite solid last Saturday morning, and Redsands was 5ft on the big sets.Unfortunately the onshore was into it,even at 5:30am in the morning. Tuesday also had abit of size, but with onshore winds. The ordinary surf will continue for some time yet.The only surfable swell will be short period stuff from the northeast. So its a fairly crap run,but im not really suprised. This time of year often brings long flat spells.

Went down south yesterday and it was about 2-3' and pretty fresh offshore in the morning but died off in the arvo making it pretty glassy and perfect. Was in the water for 5 hours and would have stayed longer if I didn't have to go to work mad Will hit it again monday!

Don't you ever head down south percy because there's always some surf around even if its only 1-2' or so over at waits or parsons, or even further over wink

lol, i dont have the balls to swim at waits or parsons..I fish off of both regularly and some of the specimens wink that are pulled up on occasions r enough to keep me out of the water. Tho parsons is very tempting - so r the beaches further over! Parsons has that very nice deep channel with that awsum left hander! laugh ill go down there one day

did you here about the great whites of stockton beach??it was on a current affair any way thats where i surf and will continue to surf.

if you havnt heard about the sharks 2 guys have been catching sharks. One guy paddles out just behind the breakers with a sammon and a hook and drops it and by the time he gets in to shore theve hooked 1 and the other guy tows it in with his 4x4

Yeah i heard about that and i think's its stupid, especially at a surfing beach cause they actually paddle out on the boards with the bait and drop it off, hence wouldn't the shark recognise the surfboard shape and think: right, there's the surfboard so it means food and then actually not wait till the guy drops it off and attack the board??? And when normal surfers paddle out they will be seen as food sources!! confused
