Hi All,

Once upon a time I used to use my short wave receiver to pick up rtty and weather faxes etc which gave me weather charts, satellite images, etc. This was back when I was living in brisbane well away from civilization and I was able to pick shortwave up pretty good.

I now live in Sydney in Chatswood (which is a bit of an RF swamp) and shortwave is pretty well out of the question, especially since I live in an apartment building and can't use a huge antenna.

I really want to be able to receive my own weather charts, and satellite images but I don't know if there is any receivers and antennas I can buy that would do the trick in my location.

Can anyone make any suggestions on whether anything would work, and if so, any suggestions on equipment, antenna's etc. I've got very little visible sky so I can't really point an antenna in a particular direction.

Is there anything that will work?

Thanks
Geoff

Not the 137.. Think he is referring to the HF weather fax, which is primarily operated for marine users.

Get urself a sangean ATS 505.. $200 from Dick smiths.. and get yourself the software "JVCOMM32" or if you have a mac, get "MULTIMODE OSX".

Place the receiver near your computer, and turn ur mic up, and decode lovely wefax images.. no cables, no problems laugh I use mine all the time.. to decode ship faxes, and the standard broadcasts from WML and WMC.

For an antenna,... length is king. So just coil up wire if you have to.. resonance is the key.

The sangean seems to have a fairly reasonable IF gain for busy areas, and I'd definitely back it! I've had mine for over 8 years or so.. An absolute must when going into the real outback.. where radio stations just don't exist... but when you need a chart, or a sat pic! Or if you're just bored and want to decode RTTY/CW or even packet/SSTV.
