The next 3 to 5 days look interesting as far as swell is concerned along the NSW and Sth QLD coast is concerned. A strong high developing over NZ and the prospect of a low in the eastern Coral Sea should produce a large area of strong/gale easterly winds north of NZ. We could see a very nice E/NE swell building along the coast mid-week heading into the weekend. Worth watching.

The swell did indeed arrive yesterday and has caused havoc right along the NSW SEQLD coast. Many beach closures and injuries. frown

I recall another Australia Day, 1987 also produced a huge swell resulting in a similar situation. Australia Day usually hosts several large surf carnivals. I recall watching competitive surf boats getting trashed from Freshwater Headland on Australia Day 1987 - that swell was a monster.

Hey GF, were you in Melbourne this weekend?

Anyway, its crazy to see how jet skiers and people would go out in such appalling conditions, lifeguards risking their lives to save others who don't appear to have common sense.

Now now our weather was beautiful, 37 degrees, DPs in the 20s, and thunderstorms Fri/Sat...you missed out. The surf was good aswell, apart from Sunday, it was flat as a tack.

How is the swell ATM, dropping off or contiuing to sustain or increase in height.

Swell did indeed pick up for the weekend Mr Front, Fairy Bower at Manly had some large crowds to go with the large?(well, bigger than usual) swell. I ended up tackling Whale beach on Saturday, which had some 5ft sets with a bit of power. Lots of fun, after battling traffic for two hours to get there! Swell is beginning to drop off now, but still a bit about. We should see a bit of swell (3-4ft) sticking 'round right into next weekend. Unfortuneatly the onshore winds will also be with us.
Victoria has a couple of offshore days approaching (Fri and Sat), although swell prospect is not huge, I'm off to magical sorrento for the weekend, so hopefully the school holiday crowd has vamoosed! The island will also be good 4 seasons.
