There are two cat one races in Australia:- 1)Syd to Hobart and 2) Syd to Lord Howe. The race will be held on 26th Oct. Distance is about 400 nmiles from Sydney to Lord Howe. Most boats will average about 9nmiles per hour so the race will on average take most competitors about 40 hours or so. I am interested in having discussion for the race. It could also help those who are racing to get some analysis... saftey is a key issue as well...

Hi Sailor

great topic! Looking forward to doing some analysis for this event smile It's been a little lack-lustre over the last few months along the East Coast; an ECL would make for interesting sailing if the timing was right (or wrong?)....

W winds best. ENE worst will mean boats get it on the nose...requiring many tacts causing distance to increase by up to 40%, about additional 160nmiles (if ENE).. Current is about up to 4 knots southerly set. Eddies exist that travel from port stephens down to sydney and back up to lord howe. Any winds above 10knots from SE to N (S, SW, W, NW) will be ideal as long as going..

Early indications point to a vigorous WSW front moving up the NSW coastline during Saturday. NW'ly winds preceding the front backing to the WSW late Saturday.

I must add that the models do tend to rush things a little at thjis stage, i.e. they push fronts through faster than actually happens, so the front may not eventuate until later on Saturday night or Sunday morning. Wind speeds at this stage ~25-30 knots with the change.

Sounds like ideal winds... need to sail NE from sydney and turn east at 32s to catch currents..
what do models say regarding Sat, Sun, Mon now?

A strong cold front at Mid-North coast by 10am Saturday. Winds SSW at about 25 knots in Sydney for the start. Most models are indicating the winds will persist throughout the race period, but expect winds to head more westerly Sunday, easing later on Monday.

Well the southerly is travelling faster than initially thought. At 5 am it's already up to Port Macquarie. Winds are expected to stay around 20/30 kts from the S along the NSW coast, but further offshore they will tend more SW'ly.

Best of luck to all competitors.

many records broken for race... conditions ideal

conditions were great for our boat called x-citation (41footer x yacht from denmark)...race started at 1pm Sat from pittwater

..strong SW winds gusting up to 34 knots seas were about 4-5 meters.. Our boat handled conditions really well

however unfortunately during the first five hours of the lord howe race we took on significant water because of a broken pipe fitting located in an external locker housing our gas bottles..

with each wave that swamped the boat (there were many) we collected significant water in this locker..... causing the boat to flood slowly....

at one stage we had 25cm of water inside boat....we assigned one person to bail continuously for two hours while we tried to race and locate problem....

at 6pm Sat ..to be prudent we abandoned the race as we couldn't identify the source of water and did not want to be too far from australia just in case it was a serious structural problem........we were about 50 nmiles from australia.. travelling quite well, at an avereage speed of 10 knots...

at the decision to retire we were doing quite well in the race...

many of the boats still going strong!!! good luck to rest of the fleet..
