I guess this is caused by the recent weather on the Eastern seaboard but I have been having major timeout issues and general slowness of the site?

Is this the case?

We've had a couple of little glitches but nothing too major. The site has been pulling record numbers this week but everything has stood up relly well. The server is using about 25% of CPU and we are using a little over half our available bandwidth. It's coped pretty well.

I did notice it was a little sluggish at times from home last night but I never had any timeouts.

I've had sort of the same problem too, especially when images are loading. We're getting broadband installed soon so the problem will probably become negligible by then smile . I've also had some trouble editing and preview posting due to this problem.

No time-outs here either, but at times things have been a wee bit slow (up to 30 seconds for a page to load).

Everything's fine now however, pages are loading at a great rate.

...and I'm on dial-up too (currently 40kbps).

Cheers, Helen

I'm on a very fast connection (2MB/S) but I have found the site to be generally a lot slower over the past week or so. I just put it down to a lot of users being on line due to some significant weather on the east coast. This may not bode well for the storm season.

Agree - I am on broadband and have had quite a few times since the E Coast weather event began where I have been unable to get onto the site or when I have been it has been painfully slow to upload. I have not experienced similar delays with other sites I have visited at the same time. Something somewhere within the WZ network must be working at full capacity. I am already expecting that the site will most likely be unavailable during times of severe weather. Guess it is just one of those things smile

I have 512k ADSL at home and only noticed it to be perhaps slightly slower than usual. Interestingly, the slowest it's been all week was last night when traffic had dropped to a trickle compared to previous nights. I put it down to Telstra issues but they could be anywhere in the network I suppose.

It's a possible there has been a bottleneck somewhere between us and some users. We monitor our bandwidth use closely and it peaked at 75% of capacity at times this week, but most of the time was averaging at just over 50%. We know it can get up to nearly 100% and the site still works. This week we did 30% more traffic than our previous busiest week EVER. So it's unlikely we'll see this kind of demand again real soon. Even a big thunderstorm outbreak doesn't generate this kind of demand.

Nothing in the WZ network (that we can monitor anyway) was at close to full capacity according to the guys who do the monitoring.

We've made significant upgrades since last year when we had several days where the server was at 100%, the bandwidth at 95% and the database at over 90%.

I also had some dropped links and slow connections earlier in the week, but, while it was more pronounced with WZ, I noticed that other sites were similarly affected and put it down to a Telstra glitch. I'm on 1.5mb ADSL which is fairly responsive to minor problems anywhere on the system. Everything is working fine today.

I've had a few problems, time-outs & slow loading pages. I'm on satellite & thought it was playing up but when I loaded several other sites with no problems I put it down to heavy traffic on WZ. When the forum finally loaded I noticed there were only about 23(?) logged in users & guests. I think it was around midnight a couple of nights ago.

EDIT: happening again now, slow loading. Satellite log showing 71% signal + 29% noise, I ran the sate test & it's working fine.

The forum and WZ itself have been a bit unresponsive of late - very noticeable when you are connected to a LAN with very high bandwidth.

If I click on a thread, or a product it will often not work at all...but if I click on it a second time it comes in a flash like usual. Ultimately its a bit of a niggling problem, nothing's really stopping me seeing what I'm trying to view. smile

Yes, that's much the same as I have been experiencing. It's almost like WZ has disappeared. A page either takes ages or fails altogether, but then a subsequent click and whatever it was loads almost instantly. I just experienced it right now. I went to preview this post and while the preview window opened, it failed to load anything. After around 30 seconds I gave up and closed the preview window, clicked "Preview Post" again and the preview window opened correctly almost immediately.

Especially over the last few days I have noticed a slowdown in response from TWC. I have had a couple of timeouts from pages, to which it immediately loads when i click refresh. Today its just reponsively slow - compared to the other sites I am using. There is a 5second lag while a model image attempt to load a model forecast or a sat image.

There does seem to be a problem yesterday and today. It's been pretty slow for me as well. it's certainly not traffic related as it's running at a fraction of what it was during the week. Probably be some internal server process that needs attention. Andrew will check it out tomorrow.

I'm still getting this problem, on two separate systems using separate providers. It is, however, intermittent -- sometimes pages and graphics come straight up; at other times a page (or just its embedded graphic) will take 10 to 20 seconds to load, or (rarely) time out. Just wondering if the problem has been diagnosed?

No. We don't have any idea what is causing the problem. It seems to happen both when the site is busy and also when it is very quiet. We are still looking.

The problems as previously described seem to be quite bad today (Wednesday 27th). I'm getting frequent page timeouts and often have to click a link multiple times before a page will load. Leaving a self-updating page (such as NSW Lightning) open in the browser usually results in a "server not found" error within a few updates. The problems are affecting both the WZ site and the forums. All other websites I have visited today are responding normally.

Same problem here, you have to click 5000 times before a page loads, posting a reply generally means you have to refresh the page and as for alternating between the forums and the home page, well you could have dinner while it loads.
Never used to be like this before, hope a solution can be found soon frown

I imagine they are trying hard to find out whats going on - I agree with the others, its gotten worse in the last day or two...the time it takes to do a model run here is now longer than it takes on ISDN back home!

Edit: This post took 1.5 mins to get though lol

We have a PC here dialled into Ozemail to see if we can replicate the problem. So far it seems to be working fine.

What we can say is there is no problems with anything here - server, database, bandwidth are all running at a fraction of their capacity. Internally, the site is blindingly fast. Normally if there are internal issues here, then we see the site running slow as well.

We'll keep looking but so far it seems like the problem is outside our control.

It's not all ISPs. Telstra seems to be worse than most. Ozemail appears fine from what we can see. Our own ISP is NTT and we are trying to find out other sites they host to see how they are faring.

Thanks for the update Mark but surely you cannot be the only site on the internet that has problems with Telstra? If it is just you then there must be some config settings that need changing. I use Bigpond and it is really slow with you guys...not always but definately a lot more over the last week or so. I now automatically hit buttons on the site twice now to get them to load.

Just as when I design websites I have to make sure they are compatable with as many browsers as possible it must be up to you guys to make sure your site is compatable with the biggest ISP in Australia? I guess it could be hard for you to find out what is happening but I am sure somewhere you have the power to control it smile

I have Telstra at home and it has been unbearably slow at times over the past few days (not today though). Not just for Weatherzone, most of the sites I visit will not load on the 1st attempt. So I don't think the problem is confined us.

If it was a problem here then we would be able to trace it back to a change we made recently. But we have not made any changes to the way our systems interface with the internet.

Try;
www.nttaus.com.au

That is the home page of our ISP.

The Salvos site worked fine as did the nttaus site. The Acer site was slow ... but not in the same way that WZ is. The Acer site was responsive and any clicked links reacted immediately ... it just took a while for the pages to fully load ... typical of heavy bandwidth usage.

A lot of the time the WZ problem exhibits typical symptoms of a nameserver issue ... either the WZ domain can't be resolved or it takes ages to resolve.

also have the same problem with the self reloading pages like the Lightning Tracker..

Yep - have same issues. No probs connecting. It's just the wait time for the server to repsond.

As for Telstra - no issues here whatsoever. On a 512kb ADSL and it flys for everything else except Weatherzone.

As with most problems of this nature it's pretty mysterious. Normally the first step with any problem is to try and replicate it but unfortunately I can't. I've had a machine dialled out all day on both my Ozemail account and Carthur's Bogpond account and there's barely been a hitch.

I'm almost certain that the problem is external to the web server itself (i.e. it's a comm's problem somewhere) as otherwise the problems would be experienced by all users. We'll continue to investigate as ideas come to mind.

I have experienced slow loading over the last 2weeks both at home on cable and at work on ADSL.

But as mentioned there are no problems today so far.

Yes, the same here although perhaps not quite as bad as it was during the previous episode. Both the WZ site and the forum seem a bit unresponsive and sometimes multiple clicks required to get some action. It's odd how problems seem to coincide with rain events on the east coast. smile

Just so you guys at wz know. I have experienced difficulties loading different sections of the site over the last 3 weeks and they all seem to coincide with weather outbreaks.

I mainly have problems loading the current weather page. Sometimes the radar maps never load and sometimes it takes minutes for the radar animations.

Im in Penrith and my internet service is optus cable broadband which has unlimitied speed. I know it's not the network i'm in because no other sites have problems. I have been able to load any part of the BoM site in les than 2 seconds on any of the same days.

To put it in perspective though, it's slow, but it still loads and it's not like i'm suffering on dial up internet like some others have. So mines not really a complaint, but rather just to report a similar experience to others.

btw, last night I was able to load anything without a problem. I loaded all 50 animations for the Sydney radar in about 10 seconds!

I've had similar problems to those described earlier too. I'm on Netspace broadband and both late October and several times this week have had major time out issues but then sometimes suddenly ok. confused

Today seems spot on.

I don't know if others are experiencing problems but I'm finding both the WZ site and the forums are very slow and unresponsive today (30th November). It's the same problem as before ... multiple clicks to load anything and sometimes page timeouts. All other web sites are loading normally, it's just WZ that appears to be semi-comatose.

This morning we ran out of Apache handlers. Increasing the number of handlers fixes the problem but things can only pushed as far as the bandwidth will allow. We are getting close to the bandwidth limit now so this afternoon may get sluggish.

On the bright side, we are increasing our bandwidth up to 10mb later this month.

It looks like our upgraded bandwidth will be installed in about three weeks. This will bring about a significant improvement in the speed of the site, particularly in periods of active weather like we have seen this week.

The problem is the site traffic has increased far more rapidly than we expected. We saw the growth a couple of months ago and started organising an upgrade from our 4megabit connection to a 10 megabit connection. However the last couple of weeks has swamped our current connection and this has lead to very slow performance of the site. We are throwing more money at the problem and we should see a much speedier Weatherzone around Christmas.

Mark,

Today is obviously a shocker as it has taken me 20 to even access the site and then a further 5 minutes to get any info loaded. Not to mention that I have been trying to send this reply for over 20 minutes now.

What about dedicated bandwidth or a dedicated server for wz silver members? I figure that we pay for a service so we should get priority service. Yes or no?

Or even a dedicated server for the forums so we can still access them even if the general site has been brought to a standstill?

The problems today are unrelated to bandwidth. We've found the problem and hopefully we'll see no more breaks in service for a while.

A dedicated server and bandwidth for Silver is something we've talked here amongst other ideas for ensuring the highest possible service level for paying users. Not that this would have helped today.

Today's issue was unrelated to load or bandwidth. It was just a troublesome Apache log file that kept causing the site to freeze. The reason it took so long to fix is that it took that long to work out what the problem was.

I agree, it was very frustrating to have the site go down before and during the 1st weekend thunderstorm in Sydney for quite some time.

Whatever the problem is, it is still there. It is now 4:25pm and for the last hour plus WZ has been a pain in the ****. I have had so maany "time outs" that I went back to BoM, for the first time in YONKS !, and it is working fine.
You better do some deeper trouble shooting Mark. Something is definately not right.

We can also see symptoms that the site may be slow to external users. It's working very fast internally though. This would suggest that the problem is somewhere else in the net (most likely our ISP). We'll out a support call through to our ISP and see if they are having problems. Normally they send us a notice whenever they are experiencing degraded service.

I apologise to continually harp on this - but for me over the last 30 minutes WZ has been terribly slow. I have again noticed frequent periods of slow-down and have been experiencing some of the multiple click stuff that others have spoken about (that has not been an issue in the past).

The issue I have is that it seems to be getting worse - I haven't been online much over the past few days but WZ has been consistently slow and timeing out everytime i have loaded up a model or some data. I have been surfing other sites (like the BoM and GFS) and these have been as per normal (the fact that GFS has been quicker than WZ is a real worry).

I have contacted my provider( Internode) who noted that the ping times were for the weatherzone.com.au domain were 'pretty attrocious' for a site being served out 60km away.

I do wonder why I have never had any problems with any pages on WZ, never had any pages time out, and all models etc load up in a few secs even considering I'm on dial-up.

David, I had a lot of slow loads and timeouts yesterday; a few today but it's better than yesterday. When the problem occurs, it's often the embedded images in a page that are the problem. For example, clicking on radar for Sydney, the surrounding page comes up, but the radar image times out. Reloading brings everything up pronto. The problem was happening pretty uniformly through yesterday, including late at night, so I don't think it's traffic-related. I'm on 1.5mb broadband, and all other sites have been functioning normally.

[edit] Maybe I spoke too soon. It took 33 seconds from when I hit the Add Reply button for the "thanks for posting" screen to come up, then a further 55 seconds to get the forum screen to come up. The stats currently show 66 people in the forum.

[second edit] And when I hit edit post that time, I was back in the forum in under 10 seconds!

I actually lodged a complaint yesterday - the responsiveness was woeful!

And it's only weatherzone - every other site opens quickly (I'm on ADSL).
But - what do you do? You say something only to have it denied.

seems like a location\isp problem to me rather than a weatherzone problem.

A quick note then without posting graphs and crap.. (and things have improved over the last hour or so)
I have run some diagnostic checks in that time, and noticed some bottlenecks bandwidth wise, it is still odd that it is weatherzone only affected thus far.

Anyone else using Comindicos dialin ports?
And/or having issues?

Hi all. I notice big slowdowns during times of "extreme wether" ie storm out breaks or very hot days. I am not on the comindico network anymore. Will see how we go.
By the way, Comindico was bought out by SPTel. ( SPTel owns WINtv and alot more ) I have heard there is some good changes on the way from a contact inside the company. cant wait.

I'm with TH.... there is nothing wrong with Weatherzone...
No problems here today or yesterday, and again I have never had any of the problems mentioned in this thread in the years I have been accessing WZ every day...

No - you mean you haven't had any problems with WZ. You can't tell me all is well when I can load up sites from around the world and the only one that doesn't come up is WZ

There was an outage of our internet connection this afternoon between 5:00pm and 6:30pm. Any users saying there is no issue mustn't have been using the site during that time wink .

Yeah it was out for a while. Went to post some pics and tried for about 30 mins every 5 mins. I knew it would be right at some stage.
No internet site provider is perfect and there will always be outages.

Thank you! Thought I was going mad there....Have to say that recently - other than this arvo - the site has been great. Nice work on fixing some of the hassles we've had in the past. Unable to get on the site at all left me thinking the cyclone had made it ashore a few days early smile

Yer I wasn't on between 5pm and 6.30pm. Unfortunatley I cannot be on the site 24 hours a day.
I must be so damn lucky in the times that i am logged on to WZ in the last 4 years that I have never had any trouble. I must just log on at the right times lol.... then again it might be that I have a good ISP..... I dunno. I find it just very odd....

Thanks Craig, I couldn't log on either so that explains it. The site has been very slow all weekend but back to normal now, these things happen from time to time, nothing odd about it really, just the joys of technology! wink

LOL. I can assure you, the server's fine.

As stated before, the evidence suggests that the problems occur on the connectivity side of things. We are changing providers for the website bandwidth in the very near future so stand by...

In the meantime we can only apologise for the slow patches and say thanks for bearing with us.

Everything seemed ok today during the time i was on, though it has tended to become slow every so often...the small price you pay for such a great site.

Yeah, I agree with anewts, its the price you pay for a popular spot. I don't mind if folk disagree but I sometimes think modern life has removed us from the 'patience' gene. I include myself in this.

It'll work out in the end, usually does.

Have to agree Bliz. Thinking back to the early dialup days and the waiting... frown now if something doesn't load instantly we start pulling our hair out. laugh

With all this increase in speed you'd reckon we'd have a ton more time on our hands, don't know about everyone else but to me I seem to have less time every day to fit things into.

There are two other aspects to this that it may help to consider, though I hope WZ's change in ISP may help. It's pretty obvious from this and former threads that, while many people experience difficulties at the same times, there are others blissfully unaware of the problem at those same times. I think both may be related to the fact that WZ is pretty java intensive. I'm a neanderthal when it comes to Java programming, but I understand that it does require additional resources from your own computer, and the nature of its implementation on your computer is critical.

1. The computer I usually access WZ on is pretty busy, with a task bar like a Christmas tree and usually a few DOS programs chewing up resources as well. Plus firewall, virus scanner, etc. If I click on a radar animation with all this going on, it *always* takes a minute or two to appear. If I kill a few programs (especially the DOS ones), hey presto I get instant responses.

2. If I use Opera instead of IE, I get far faster response. Maybe its implementation of Java is better, maybe it just isn't as cluttered as IE which I've used on this machine for several years.

In situations where I know my computer is straining under the load, WZ takes time to load when Java comes into play but at the same time I can load Bureau pages at lightning speed, because, I figure, it takes processing resources to cope with the Java, but rendering an html page takes minimal processing power. The most common problem I get is a whole page loading except for the main image (e.g. I call up a satpic and the surrounds load but the satpic times out). The page surrounds appear to be pure html, but how is the image called up?

If we're to eliminate the user's computer as a source of the problem, background tasks and the actual browser in use need to be considered before blaming either the WZ service or the intervening network.

The only place on Weatherzone where client-side Java runs is in the radar animator. We'll probably do away with the applet-based animator within the next few months and replace it with Javascript/DHTML now that support for those technologies is more standard.

This would be due to the fact that our image server is located at another URL, thus you don't get the benefit of HTTP keepalives etc. It's been on my list for a while now to mirror the image server under Weatherzone so I might do that in the next few days.
