Yeah cool thread idea!
I got so many having spent so much time over the years on a beach in one way or another. Be it fishing or paddling into the waves.
A couple .....
in NSW (forget the place)

At Knights on our Sth Coast

And seconds later

And then there's fishing... another post maybe later.

nice Knights shots there Tim, I grew up BB'g there with my mates, Its funny how a beach changes over time, everyone talks about how it doesn't break like it used to, we don't get the same sort of long period swells we used to, its a bit hard to compare though when your trying to judge something from when you were 15 to now, but im pretty sure they(south coast) don't get those big long period south swells as much, seem to get more westerly swells nowadays, a good indicator is how Shark Alley never brakes any more, we used to BB there so much between 94-98, now its unheard of, I think it broke once last winter!.

yep TS that shot is North Shore HAW, have a friend living in Honolulu so had to visit :p

I have a mate with thousands of amazing shots of beachy/surf stuff, on my HDD now, but will try to get permission to post them first

here's a little spot up north a bit from Me

Campfires are written into the rule book Aaron! Have em at home quite a lot and always on the beach,
as is a brew of some description as the sun sinks away.
I remember camping at salt creek as a storm came in off the ocean with a guster that was savage. I was in the swag under my 4WD but my mate had bought this new tent and set it up. The ponderosa we called it. I awoke to screaming "help me ya *******s" and as I awoke I saw the wind start to lift his tent and blow it across the sand past me. I grabbed the tent as it went past and being firmly wedged under the car managed to hold it. But I was laughing so hard I nearly ****ed my pants, I really should have let him roll on up into the dunes LOL LOL. It still remains one of the funniest things I have ever seen.
The ponderosa was never quite the same and the stories from the rest of that weekend are best not repeated here. Ah good memories, haven't been out like this for a few years. "Wistful thoughts"
ANyway don't often have the cam with me on fishing trips, bit stupid hey but a few Aaron.

Down at Cape Jervis at early moring hours

At salt creek don't rememebr when.

My beloved Rapid Bay Jetty ruined by wowsers and rules

Ah living on the beach - fantastic. My dog goes with me whenever its legal and then quite often when its not. Still nothing is illegal till ya get caught. wink

Thought I might contribute some of my pics that I took last year when we were in Sydney with Dad. We went for a walk all the way from Clovelly Beach to Bondi Beach, so here are a couple of my snaps from along the way:

A view to the north along the coastline from where we began. Bondi is still another 2 or 3km past that furthest cliff you can see jutting out, so it gives you an idea of how far we walked.

Bronte Beach, one of the smaller beaches on the way.

A wave near Bondi. That water was so nice.

Me enjoying the scenery at Bondi. It was amazing how many people were there!!
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3111/3120932523_d5b3be7ea7_o.jpg

So there ya go. It was a nice warm and sunny day, so perfect beach weather. Had some huge storms that night too, which was a plus smile

That is a gorgeus right hander. Its pitching in an interesting way. Does it really suck up on mid to low tide? It looks very sucky as there isn't much crest to the peak there.

REPLY TO Stokie-

its a bit of a funny place over here, crowds are measured by numbers in the handful, the locals around here get funny if there's more than 3 people in the car, its always courteous to paddle out in shifts when there's a few in the water anyway, coz you know its going to be pumping all day wink

my tip, surf as early as you can, as most of the locals wont get down to the beach till 8-9

haha yeah I figured it would be something like that. I only ever surf either by myself or with my bro (whos not really as keen as me), so I doubt that should be a problem. The problem for me is just finding the time to make it all the way over there.

Ohh Tim don't worry about how much you have changed, I'm lookin at 2 kids now and really really trying to get out into the water as half as often as I used to, I'm ignoring the fact that I'm apparently in the 'transition stage' from being active, surfin every day to just family life, im only 28 and over the next 3 months am going to show transition the door, I just need someone to hit the water with, im always rocking up to nice kegs and there's not a soul to be seen, and there's no way I'm surfin around here by myself, I mean, I would like to know there is a human out in the water with me to share the ocean with all the Noah's laugh

nice shot melfunktion, I had a mate who lived in Cairns for a couple years, he said once in a blue moon there was 'rideable waves' during strong winds, I think he was joking about the quality though laugh

Lovely shots Aaron, especially the last, but you may want to consider a) a sensor clean to remove those darned dust bunnies and b) a ruler to straighten those horizons... nearly fell of me chair. Just joking of course. laugh Really must do another trip to the west coast and it's photos like these that give me the travel bug. It's been far too long since I've been there... something like 30-odd years (sad, I know).

Some lovely photos there Craig. Would love to go out get stuck into it however i sold my esky lid a long time ago and quite frankly i don't have the energy;) Tim, i generally only have 2 glasses of red these days, the inflicted hangover just isn't worth going any further;)

Not sure if this fits, but since we are on the beachy thingy whatsa ya call it, i thought i might add a few from my recent collection.

I love the beach, it has so many interesting moods and can change so quickly that any moment can never be repeated. A bit like storms really.

Holy smoke, Sydney. At least I'll have someone else to visit when I'm over next. wink

Next AGM is to be held in Melbourne. Waiting with baited breath for our Vic brethren to set a solid date in August. laugh

Greg, those shots are rippers, mate. Wish I had the time, inclination and scenery to get out there and shoot. Other things on my plate right now, but hopefully by the end of summer things will be back to normal and I can get some inspiration again. smile

Thanks Helen;) I'm sure when time permits you'll get your teeth stuck into the great country side that you find yourself in.

Craig, so it's Sydney mate!? Well, not a bad place for weather related events, i hope you get a few. You'll do the SA crew proud i have no doubt.

I'm pretty sure the Vic commitee is leaning towards the 22nd of August, but don;t quote me on that. My sister is getting married on the 15th up in Cairns so hopefully i wont miss out, considering i may be apart of one of the presentations.....here's for touching wood! I'm working on the initial visual concepts for the invite/poster, which i'm hoping will be totally different to Adelaides, so not too much longer and all the details will be made public.

Here's a shot of a beachie in Taiwan of all places I took last monday. Doing a bit of travelling here with my girlfriend, this beach stretches a long way with various reefs and a couple of breakwall wedges along the way. It's in the coastal town of Yilan, about 30-45mins drive from Taipei. It's a reasonably consistent place, Typhoons keep it busy in summer and winter has plenty of swell.

http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x256/st0kiee/DSC04946.jpg

Might not be the best shot but I figured it warranted posting here for location only. It was about 3-4ft, maybe a little bigger on the sets. Needless to say I hired board and wettie and got my fill.

Edit: Please keep images to 800 pixels on the longest side per the guidelines, thanks.

ha ha Lennie, thanks for your comments dude. I still have a mountain of images to get through, so i'll put up a few in the coming week or so.

I think you'll have to cross the border and get into the kimberley mate and get some corkers yaself.

Since there's been a real lack of weather to shoot i might as well do seascapes/ landscapes.....

I might have to post a few of my own landscapes smile

this shot is an oldie but shows that yorkes has its fair share of heavy waves too, only surfed this place once when I was young (and stupid) we got out there after a hectic paddle and found our selves surrounded in seals, this place is way out there too....

not on this day, but when i was like 17 or something, one of my mates is a bit of a nutbag, (now lives in Hawaii and been there for 10yrs) really wanted to hit it, so we went out got a couple rights but they all seemed to section out, I cant remember any of us getting anything decent, it wasn't big when we went out there probably 5ft ish, Its probably more of a photo wave than anything, but there is the occasional smoker definatly, one place that is super makeable over Yorkes (PM's) is that wave you have to walk really far to when you rock up at Lizards, very similar to this wave and has the 3 sections of death that can be your friend or foe, im sure some of you know where im talkin about, not really sure if people surf it much anymore

Yeah have heard that PM's is a very serious wave, from the take off in front of the rock to the crazy ledging barrels, people still surf it but you don't hear about it much unless you bring it up. Long walk though as you said.

Now that has to be one of the heaviest shots of Knights that i've ever seen eek ! And that wouldn't be tim white by any chance, i've ran into him a few times and got some good shots of his mates at an undisclosed location.

Seen some amazing tiny little waves breaking right along the sand down at Almonta today, usually a salmon fishing beach, I was totally amazed how perfect they were, Did not have my camera down there today, but this is what they looked like just a little smaller, but just as crystal clear as this.
taken in the same spot a while ago now

Newcastle breakwall was been working well over the past few days with the swells that have been pushed in by the low. Average 5 footers with the occasional up to 12ft rolling in. Two albums are attached from my facebook from the 21st and 22nd.

Beautiful shot Jacci! I was down there over Christmas, and I would go as far as to say that Southern Victoria is the best photographic area in Australia.

I love the range of colours in your shot as well. By the look of the sky and water, I assume you used a polariser?

Got some great Fleurieu Peninsula waves a few weeks back. I forgot my camera so I had to use my phone, but the photos still turned out ok because the waves were good. There's some more shots here: http://www.surf-much.com/session/view/13...20wedgey%20Adel

It's an Olmypus TG830 (forgot the brand name!). So is yours a Canon?
That waterproof casing sounds pretty synch. I also can't wait for the weekend- 3 days of decent warmth to end the holidays.

We'll both have photos to post here now. Twas a good time to get this started up again.

Good stuff, does Bennett's Beach have good surf? I'd love to surf with the backdrop of Yacaaba Head, it would be pretty cool.

Occasionally we get good surf, moreso on the south side of Yacaaba, between the heads.

Here is a pic from in front of the Surf Club during the last ECL
A surfer being towed, behind the breakers, through the spray of the wave you can just see the Jet-ski, this was some of the biggest surf ive ever seen here, mind you Yacaaba Headland and the four islands give this beach fairly good protection from a southerly swell.

I'd say your pretty spot on i reckon. My father in-law got talking to this surfer later on that day and he said he broke 2 surf boards and he also estimated some waves to be closer to 15-16ft, but most were 10-12ft.

Wow two surfboards broken!! I couldn't imagine surfing in surf that big!! The biggest I ever surf in is about 4ft maybe 5ft once or twice, but being a bodyboarder, clean 2ft surf is big enough to fit inside the barrel of, so I don't really need to surf in big surf to have fun anyways.

Yeah, likewise with me Eddy. It's also tricky to get that money shot underneath the barrel, because the water sucks you behind the waves, so you really have to push against it.

Nice pics SM.
Your waves were definately better than ours yesterday, today waves are lucky to be 2ft with odd wave creeping up to 2.5ft, messy with no shape what so ever all thanks to the SE breeze!!

Yes i have seen his photography before and he has some mind blowing photography!

Yes ours were quite big. However I prefer about 2-3ft waves when taking photos. Because in my 4-5ft waves yesterday, you couldn't stand up where the waves were breaking so it made it impossible to get in any barrels, as you saw by my pics.

But seriously. Nice pics SM and eddy. That wave shot in front of clubhouse is epic eddy. Last time I surfed back in 2001 there was an epic day at Bar Beach. Huge, drive a truck thru left and rights. Had my old bob mctavish bluebird humming.

How come you don't surf anymore EN? My dad lives right near Bar Beach, it's a really nice beach, but is very overcrowded in summer.

How come you don't surf anymore EN? My dad lives right near Bar Beach, it's a really nice beach, but is very overcrowded in summer.

Bar Beach is a complete circus in hotter weather. The stretch from Bar to The Cliff has got to be one of the most surfer congested areas on the East Coast when surf is good.
I gave up surfin due to a combo of things. a bad fin slash from a surf raged nutjob who attacked me with his board after I got on the same wave but way down the line from him on a two foot close out lol. Anyway the chop got ulcerated coz I wouldn't stay out of water. Eventually it got so infected I had to lay off for 3 weeks. I plunged back into the surf on a deceptively powerful swell. Got wiped out and then caught in a nasty undertoe rip and even though I paddled across it I really got tired from lack of condition. A week later a guy got a big bite taken out of him by a shark at Birdie beach on the Central Coast and I just quit surfing cold turkey. Never been on a board since. I do miss it. But fishing is my passion now and I see too many sharks to ever get back in water again

Wow, interesting story EN. The surfers down here don't seem too bad as I've never had problems with any of them so far- touch wood. My uncle actually saw a shark once when we were out there, but didn't see it again so he couldn't confirm. It was a scary moment, I must say.

Had some fun in the surf yesterday, although the water wasn't the cleanest.

Thanks Eddy, nice follow up pics. The second one is quite interesting with water moving from in from of you.

I know how you feel, I was so busting to get my first true barrel shot that I would get frustrated every time I went out and didn't get one. I must say though I'm pretty stoked that I got the money shot today.

Yeah the 3 sequential shots I got were brilliant. Interesting that you have a preference for the 2nd one of the sequence. Personally my fave is the last one (only just) because I'm 100% inside the barrel. Btw its hard to imagine that there was a thick sea fog just 15-20 mins after these were taken! smile
