Hello All: Just an explanation of how the different frontal systems affect Mena's weather:
Cold Fronts:
A) Canadian Cold Fronts: This is the most common front we get. The cooler air usually modifies and the temp dropoff is fair but not drastic. (Usually the day after a cold front has passed has a little residual rainfall, cloudy with gusty Northerly winds with steady or slowly falling temperatures; the day after this, when the clouds clear out is when the true coldness is realized). Lets say the cold front passes through about 12Noon with the high temp of 65F(18.3C), the next day the temp falls throughout the day and the day after, the high temp may be around 50F(10.0C). This pattern happens in Winter, you'll get a few days of normal/above normal highs, then...WHAM!...a cold front(back to COLD reality), the next few days the high temps slowly recover and then WHAM! the process repeats again. If the temps are really above average and a powerful cold front is coming, that is when severe weather usually happens.
A1)Arctic/Polar Cold Fronts: This is like Canadian fronts, except MUCH colder. The airmass is straight off the frozen Arctic and moves so rapidly that there is little air modification. With these are very low baro readings, a sudden wind change to the North and rapid, steep drop in temps. The front moves so fast that there is little precip/snow flurries with it. The high may be 55F(12.7C) and 2 days later(see scenario above) the high may be 30F(-1.1C). A few years ago one of these "Siberian Expresses" came through and Mena stayed below freezing for 5 straight days! One day, one of these hit and the high was 61F(16.1C), by 8 P.M., it was snowing lightly and 25F(-3.8C) BRRRR!!!
B)Pacific Cold Fronts: These are cold fronts originating from the Pacific Coast, therefore they aren't very cold and have a good moisture feed. Let's say the high is 62F(16.6C) a Pacific front comes through, sometimes giving copious rain and the next day the high is 55F(12.7C). If a front comes on the heels of another front (2-4 days previous) the front will be "moisture starved" and the fronts passage will be dry, with only some clouds and a wind shift to mark its passage.
C)Stationary Fronts: When a cold front stalls out in our vicinity, this kind of slow-moving front can really make the rain come down! I've seen over 10IN(254mm)rain in a day from this setup.
D)Warm Fronts: Sometimes a weak front will just pass to our south, before becoming Stationary and moving back Northward as a
Warm front. We can also get good rainfalls from this event. If the front comes through at night, the temps will actually start rising! The high temp(Overall High) will occur just before Midnight. This is often accompanied by thick fog.
If we get a shallow pool of cold air, with warm air aloft, this gives us the unfortunate setup for a good freezing rain/ice storm.
The setup for SNOW(!) has to be just about perfect for us to get a good amount: Cold air in place and a Low pressure to our South, circulating heaps of moisture on us from the Gulf; this type of setup gave us 1FT of Snow on Dec. 24, 1975. Otherwise, frontal snow is very light. The vast majority of Low vortexes move to the North of us.
Occasionally we are besieged by a slow-moving(often retrograde[Westerly]moving) Cutoff Low. These things, depending on speed can give good rain, or a little rain and a few days of cloudiness.
Cold fronts usually don't make it this far South in Summer, our rain is then supplemented by daytime heating/convection showers. These pop-up during the heat of the day, move very little, rain themselves out and dissipate around sunset. It is for this reason that we have about a daily 20% chance of rain in Summer. With these, one side of the street may get wet while the other side stays dry.
Very Rarely, the remnants of a Tropical Storm(ex-Hurricane) makes it up here and gives us some rain and wind. The VAST majority of landfalling systems are steered well to our East or South into Texas.
Precipitation usually hits us from the North/NNW if its of Canadian origin and hits us from the West(T-storms moving from SW to NE) if its of Pacific origin. Warm front rain comes up from the South. We rarely get rain hitting us from the SE, E or NE.
Our prevailing winds are either Southerly(warm, moist) or Westerly (warm, dry). Since we are in a valley, it isn't very windy here at all. The severity of storms is enhanced by the strong Southerly winds pumping up the temp and heavily-laden with Gulf moisture. Unfortunately, our dynamics are such that our chances of getting freezing rain/ice are much greater than that getting good accumulating Snowfall.

Well, I thought ya'll might like to learn about what the fronts are like in my corner of the world. If you've any questions, feel free to ask.
P.S. A good indicator of if we may get a Polar front is to look at the temps in Alaska; if the temps there are super cold, you know that eventually that cold airmass is going to head South pretty soon. When the Polar airmass is on US, the Alaskan temps warm back up.
I think so far this year, we've had 14 dry fronts come through. Come on SNOW!!!(nix ice!!!)
I hope this was interesting and enjoying to you all!
