Autumn/Fall Greetings Friends:

Week with pleasant conditions (Autumn arrived on the 23rd) and good periods of much needed "wet relief". Rain was due to a Canadian cold front (passage late on the 17th) and from a fairly slow-moving Pacific cold front (passage on 23rd; around 9:15AM the stormline hit me). The 21st-early on the 23rd had very gusty (moisture-laden) S/SW winds and the conditions felt somewhat like Springtime. Thankfully the nastiest of the weather missed my area. Overall low-abt. 5:29PM-listed for the 17th; Overall Low-abt. 11:03PM-listed for the 18th; Overall High-12:01 AM and Overall Low-abt. 11:23PM-listed for the 23rd. It was surely GREAT to see ample rain again--to actually have rainareas/stormlines which didn't miss my area/diminish.
Upcoming forecast has temperatures for highs in upper-70s to lower-80sF/24-27C with lows around the lower-50s to lower-60sF/11-16C with more rainchances later in week. I see a few leaves on area trees are starting to change colors. It seems to me that the wetter the Autumn, the brighter the colors on the leaves.

Sportswise: Friday night, Mena High opened 7-4A (Dist. 7 Class AAAA) conference play by hosting the Mustangs of Central Arkansas Christian (CAC). CAC (11-point favorite) is ranked #5 in 4A, MHS is ranked #20. CAC has a powerful passing attack that MHS just couldn't defend very well. After holding a 14-0 lead at half, CAC cranked it up in the 2nd half and cruised to an easy 38-7 triumph. CAC had touchdown passes covering 70, 83, 25 and 13 yards as the CAC Quarterback completed 19-of-24 passes for 361 yards. There was a threat of T-storms and I attended the game wondering if it'd be completed before the game ended. Game ended around 9:50 PM and around 10 minutes beforehand, you could see fairly vivid lightning to the W/NW. This rainarea just missed Mena to the NW (moving NE). Next Friday night, Mena has an away game at Nashville.
Well, I guess U Arkansas has 9-lives like a cat as they escaped again with another nail biting win. Saturday afternoon (reg. televised game) the Razorbacks hosted the #22-ranked Crimson Tide of Alabama. Arkansas was a slim 2-point favorite (as both teams featured Freshman Quarterbacks--Mustain for Arkansas and Wilson for the Tide). 'Bama took a 10-3 lead at half, as both teams wasted chances to score. Arkansas came into the game as the only NCAA Div. I team (117 teams in Div. I) without a takeaway (intercepting a pass/recovering a fumble) this season. Well, the Hogs made their first takeaway count in a big way as Kelly returned a 'Bama fumble for a 44-yard Touchdown (Hogs led at that point 17-10 with 4:08 left 3rd Qtr.) 'Bama's running was just effective enough and their passing attack gave the Hog defense troubles all game. With around 3minutes left (score tied 17-17), the Tide culminated a long drive with a 30-yard Field Goal (FG) attempt (to possibly win) but the kick was wide right. Both teams failed to score in regulation and the game went to Overtime (OT). Arkansas got the ball first in OT and the Hogs QB (Mustain) threw an interception. Now all the Tide had to do to win was score (either a FG or TD). On 4th down, the Tide attempted a game-winning 38-yard FG--BUT IT MISSED WIDE RIGHT. Game then went to the 2nd OT. In the 2nd OT, the Tide got the ball first, they soon scored a TD (putting them up 23-17), BUT, the Tide kicker (Tiffin) MISSED THE EXTRA POINT!!! That meant if the Hogs could score a Touchdown & make the extra point that they'd win. On 3rd down & 7 (from the 11-yard line), Hog QB Mustain threw the ball to Cleveland for the Touchdown. Jeremy Davis kicked the extra-point and the Hogs pulled out an improbable 24-23 win in 2OT!!!!! (That's why football/gridiron is known as "a game of inches"). The Tide kicker missed 3 Field Goals & an Extra-Point in the game. I really though the Hogs were going to lose this one, but you never can tell what's going to happen. The Hogs have an open date next Saturday, before taking on powerful Auburn on Oct. 7.

Wishing ALL A Super Week~~~Wet Snow

Hi Wet Snow

When does Mena usually get it's first frost of the year?

Bad luck for the USA in the Ryder Cup, but Europe played great and deserved the win laugh

Greetings UK Steve:
Well, according to weather.com--Climatologically Mena's first 32F/0C minimum should occur around December 4th.
This (first 32F/0C or lower minimum/first frost) can vary widely in actuality. Mena's first 32F/0C or lower minimums in past years:
2005: Oct. 25
2004: Nov. 25
2003: Nov. 23
2002: Nov. 7
2001: Oct. 28
2000: Oct. 9

Sorry, but I really don't keep up with the first occurrance of frost (which can occur above 32F/0C), but I do note the first (and last) 32F/0C or lower minimum each year.

As re the Ryder Cup: Yes, CONGRATULATIONS on the record-breaking performance by the European team.
IMO, I'd rather the US team lose like they did (in a blowout) than to choke away a big lead OR to lose in heart-breaking fashion in the last match.
Just a question: How many countries (which were represented by the European team) did it take to beat players from 1 country (the US)? laugh

Congrats again~~~Wet Snow

Dry week with roller-coaster temperatures. Lower humidities made for some good diurnal ranges. A Canadian cold front passed through on the 28th--it was dry in my area, showers just off to my east. Very windy from SW to NW on 27th-29th. Autumn definitely is here with the cooler mornings, pleasant afternoons, lower humidities and very variable conditions. Overall High-12:01 AM and Overall Low-abt. 11:29 PM-listed for the 28th (felt very cool with the gusty NW/NNW breezes). I see more trees with leaves starting to change colors. Starting to get really dry again and unless we get a cold front to come through, the shower prospects are negligible. Believe it or not, we're forecasted for highs flirting with the 90F/32.2C-mark this week (I guess it's our "Indian Summer"), which is remarkable as Mena didn't have a 90F/32.2C high for all of September.
*******
Sportswise: Well it was a Very TALL order as Mena traveled SE to Howard County to tangle with the powerful Scrappers of Nashville High. NHS (whopping 28-point favorite) is ranked #3 in AAAA, Mena is now ranked #26 in AAAA. Nashville is just too big and fast on offense & defense and did it easy. The Scrappers scored TDs on their first 7 possessions of the 1st half to take a 49-7 lead at the break. The domination was evident as at half, NHS had already rolled up over 360 yds. in total offense while Mena only had 75 yards in total offense. Before throwing his first incompletion, the NHS Quarterback, Whitmore was 7-for-7 passing for 176 yards and 4 Touchdowns. Because the Scrappers led by over 35 points at half, the "Mercy Rule" came into effect--continuously running gameclock in 2nd half. Nashville played the 2nd half with their reserves as the game was well in hand. Mena managed 2 TDs late in the game to make the score a little more respectable, losing by 49-20. A Thorough Manhandling!!! Next week, Mena travels to Garland County to take on the Fountain Lake Cobras.
The Arkansas Razorbacks had an open date on Saturday and will get back into SEC play this next Saturday; a tall order as they play at very tough & nationally-ranked Auburn (another TV game). Hopefully the Hogs can keep the game close.

Wishing ALL A Fantastic Week~~~Wet Snow

The experts are predicting an El Nino event here in Australia in the next few months.
My question is how does an event like this usually translate in the States and more specifically how will it effect snowfall in the yosemite area.I'm going skiing there in Feb. next year.

Hello Dave:
SO SORRY for the delay, but my PC has been in the repair shop for the last week.

I'm not exactly sure on the specifics of your question. IF the Pacific Northwest gets their regular amount of Pacific cold fronts, you can be assured that the areas around Yosemite will get ample snowfall (as will the other ski areas in the Pac. NW) If not, I assume that this ski area--the one you're going to--has snowmaking capabilities; so, I don't think you should worry too much about lack of snowfall there, as it'll be there, one way or another.

Kind Wishes~~~Wet Snow

Greetings Folks:
Sorry for delay, but my PC has been under repairs for the last week.

Unseasonable warmth--dry--with a cool-down at lateweek. A weak and dry Canadian cold front passed through on the 5th. The warmth felt very good as I know the really warm days are numbered. I'm about sick of all the dry frontal passages lately. The humidities have been fairly low as well with not too much in the way of cloudcover. Scarcity of rain has prompted the County Judge to put Polk County back under a Countywide Burn Ban on the 6th.
Now (Thur., 1:13 PM CDT) another Canadian cold front has passed through (dry), the skies are cloudy and the temperatures--after a slight recovery--are falling through the 50sF/~13C and the low in the morning will be in the mid-30sF/~2C. The next few days will see recovering maximums/minimums. This time of year, the cool shots of air don't last long. We've a good chance of rain later in the weekend--here's Hoping!!!
*******
Sportswise, Friday night: Mena traveled to Garland County to take on the Cobras of Fountain Lake. Fountain Lake (2-point favorite) is ranked #31 in 4-A, MHS is ranked #29. It was hoped that Mena's injured Quarterback (McCormick) would play in the game, but he was reinjured in pre-game warmups, so the reserves were at QB. After a sloppy start to the game, FLHS scored a TD on a 44-yard pass play to go up 6-0, which was the Halftime score. Early in the 3rd Quarter, Mena got on the board with a TD on a fumble recovery in the end zone. The extra point was good and Mena led 7-6. Then it went all downhill from there. FLHS took advantage of MHS turnovers and ran away with a 40-13 victory. Turnovers absolutely killed Mena. MHS had 6 turnovers (2 passes intercepted and 4 lost fumbles), which really hurt, considering quite a few of them were deep in Cobra territory. This loss just about eliminates Mena from post-season playoffs.
This Friday, it's Homecoming as Mena entertains a new conference foe--Pulaski Oak Grove.
On Saturday (11 AM Nationally televised game) Arkansas figured to have their hands full as they traveled to Auburn, Alabama (Jordan-Hare Stadium) to take on the nationally #2 ranked Auburn Tigers. The Tigers were 15-point favorites and looked to have their way, as they've beaten the Razorbacks handily the last couple years and this years' team features strong passing, running and defensive plays.
Amazingly, Arkansas' offensive line blew open big holes for the running backs to go through and the Hogs defense harrassed the Auburn Quarterback all day and shut down the Auburn running attack. Coming into the game, Auburn hadn't allowed a rushing Touchdown. Early in the game, the Hogs' McFadden put an end to that as he scored a TD on a spectacular 63-yard run. Hogs took a 17-10 lead at half en route to a stunning 27-10 upset of heavily favored Auburn. This is likely the Hogs biggest upset over such a Highly Ranked team (on the road) since the Razorbacks upset #1 ranked Texas in 1964. Hogs last win over a team ranked this high was a victory over #5-ranked Texas in 2003. This was one of the BIGGEST upsets in recent Arkansas history. Since Arkansas joined the SEC in 1992, this is only their 3rd sweep of Alabama teams (victories over U. of Alabama and Auburn) in the same year. The loss caused Auburn to fall in the polls from #2 to #11 and caused Arkansas to get into the Top 25 Poll now at #17 (first time Hogs ranked in the Top 25 since 2003). Hogs played offense and defense on Auburn like Auburn usually plays against Arkansas. As one sportswriter said, "Arkansas out-Auburned Auburn." WOOOOO PIG SOOOIIIEEE!!!! GO HOGS GO!!!
Next Saturday, Hogs play Southwest Missouri State in a non-conference game at home.

Wishing ALL A Great Week~~~Wet Snow

*=This Tied the Record Low for the date (Oct. 13), set in 1980.
Another dry week with a cool shot of air as a dry Canadian cold front passed through late on the 11th. Overall Low-abt. 11:17 PM-listed for the 11th; Overall Low-abt. 11:17 PM-listed for the 12th. The 12th felt especially chilly as it was overcast all day with nippy N/NW breezes. The first frost of Autumn occurred on the morning of the 13th. The very low humidities made for some good diurnal temperature spreads.
Had some light rain this (Sunday) morning--with more to come. It's a very welcome sight as we had been 21 straight days without rain (quite a long stretch of dryness for us).
Forecast call for near seasonal temperatures with fair rainchances the next few days (forecasted at least .50"/12+mm rain---here's hoping!!!)
*******
Sportswise: Friday night Mena High had their Homecoming game, hosting (a new Conference opponent) the Pulaski Oak Grove Hornets. The home-side bleachers were packed and as usual it was a great atmosphere. POG (7-point favorite) is ranked #32 in 4A, MHS is ranked #33. The Hornets gashed the Bearcat defense with several good running plays. MHS found success with some good runs and passes and the score was knotted at 7-7 at Halftime. The game continued in exciting fashion in the 2nd half; especially with 6:40 left when--on a 4th & 9 situation--MHS went for it and the Bearcats scored a TD on a 45-yard pass play (Bunch to Deramus) which cut the Hornet lead to 17-14. Neither team scored after that and the Hornets took the 17-14 triumph.
Mena hosts another new Conference foe--Arkansas Baptist--next Friday night.
Saturday afternoon, Arkansas had their Homecoming game, playing (att. 72,543) a non-conference match against Div. I-AA Southeastern Missouri State Redhawks. UA (ranked #17 nationally) were heavy favorites and quickly established dominance. On UA's first offensive play, Darren McFadden ran for a 52-yard TD. A little later, Felix Jones broke loose for an 85-yard TD jaunt. By halftime UA had a 42-0 lead and already had 309-yds. of Total Offense to SEMO's 63 yds. of Total Offense. Quite a few UA reserves (on offense & defense) played in the 2nd half. In the 3rd Quarter, UA's defense scored a TD as Keith Jackson, Jr. returned an interception 69-yds. for a score. By games' end UA had racked up a whopping 530 offensive yards (149 passing yards and a humongous 381 rushing yards), SEMO only could manage 144 offensive yards (only 31 rushing yards) against the stingy UA defense. It all added up to a 63-7 UA blowout, which gave Hog Head Coach Houston Nutt a very good 49th Birthday present (and broke a streak of 3-straight Homecoming losses). For the 1st time in school history, 2 UA running backs each rushed for 100+ yards in consecutive games.
Next Saturday, UA continues SEC play by hosting the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss).

Wishing ALL An Awesome Week~~~Wet Snow

Well, our prolonged (21-straight days) dry spell has been broken in a big way.
A large and slow-moving Pacific cold front (low pressure center in SW US) has been advancing toward my area. I recorded 1.10"/27.9mm rain yesterday (Sun.) and since MIDNIGHT today (Mon., now 7:52 PM CDT) I've recorded 2.90"/73.6mm rain, for a Wonderful Storm Total of 4"/101.6mm rain. HALLELUJAH!!!
The 2.90" daily rain today is the largest daily total I've recorded since June 23rd.

I wish some of that type of rain would eventuate here in Melbourne. I have never seen it so dry around this city during spring. Normally it is so green and lush durning this time of year. Lawns are nearly brown. If we dont get rain soon, brown lawns will dissolve and turn to dust. I can't see what hope trees are going to have this summer without any rain. This is very worrying indeed.

Hello Papy_Zapy2, percy_04 & boardrider_17:

Yes, the very welcome rain fell as a steady slow soaker--so Flash Flood Watches/Warnings weren't issued for my area. There was also no thunder, the center of the low-pressure tracked just north of me. IF this had happened in the Winter--cold air in place and a southerly-tracking low-pressure--this would've given us a very good SNOW dump!!! Oh well, mabye it'll happen.
Yes, my area has been getting good rains and we're still above normal on rain for the year...BUT...our rains have been very inconsistent, just good dumps followed by LONG dry spells.
October is one of our wettest average months as our average is 5.10"/129.5mm and after getting zilch (until the 14th), the recent heavy dump accounts for around 80% of the monthly average.

A somewhat Springlike week: good rains, fast-moving weather systems and Very variable temperatures. Rain was from a sprawling slow-moving Pacific cold front (passage on the 16th, vortex of low-pressure passed just to the north of Mena), a Canadian cold front (passage late on the 18th) gave the rain on the 19th and a dry Canadian cold front passed (only cloudiness and wind shift to WNW) in the early evening of the 21st. The raindump was really welcome and sorely needed (ending yet another Countywide Burn Ban). Overall Low-abt. 11:01 PM-listed for the 15th; Overall High-12:01 AM and Overall Low-abt. 11:56 PM-listed for the 19th. Tree-leaf colors are looking nice and should really be a beaut in a couple weeks time. Upcoming forecast calls for variable conditions and another rainchance mid-week.

Sportswise: Friday night, Mena hosted another new conference opponent--the Eagles of Arkansas Baptist. MHS (25-point favorite) was ranked #35 in 4-A, AB was ranked #42. Each team played sloppily and was unable to really cash-in on the miscues. Each team had some big plays and then bogged down on offense. MHS took a 14-6 lead at half. Late in the 3rd Qtr. AB scored a TD and was successful on a 2-point conversion to tie the game at 14-14. In the 4th Qtr. it really looked like MHS was likely to lose or the game could be headed for Overtime. With 5:52 left, MHS finally went up 21-14 as Dennis caught a pass from Bunch and scored on a 40-yard play. With 3:40 left, MHS put the game away, Chris Rose scoring a TD on a 40-yard punt return. WHEW!!! (MHS wins 28-14)
Next Friday night, the Bearcats play at Ashdown.
On Saturday (reg. TV game), the Arkansas Razorbacks hosted the U Mississippi (Ole Miss) Rebels. UA is ranked #15 Nationally and was a heavy 21-point favorite. UA started the game in fine fashion as Felix Jones returned the opening kickoff 100-yards for a TD, giving UA a quick 7-0 lead (14:42 left 1st Qtr.) UA played workmanlike on offense and defense, taking a 21-3 lead at half on the way to a 38-3 triumph. Next Saturday UA hosts (in War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock), the Indians of Louisiana-Monroe (formerly known as NE Louisiana U.), in a non-conference game.
Wishing ALL A Great Week~~~Wet Snow

Another week with plentiful rains and wildly variable temperatures. Rain was from disturbances and a SW/S airflow ahead of a Pacific Cold Front (passage early on 27th). Felt very cool and raw on the 27th with drizzle, very gusty NNW winds and a daytime temperature steady near 50F/10C. Overall Low-abt. 11:11 PM-listed for the 22nd; Overall High-12:01 AM-listed for the 27th. The first freezing/below freezing minimum of Autumn was on the morning of the 23rd (last freezing/below freezing minimum of Spring was the morning of March 24th=211 days). Otherwise, the mornings were nippy/cool with pleasant afternoons (great for doing outside yardwork). Autumnal Colors are looking great now!!! Upcoming forecast calls for highs in the 70sF/21+C and lows near 50F/10+C. Today (Sunday the 29th), most of the US went back to standard time (CST for me). I really don't like it as it'll be getting dark too early (sunset today at 5:27 PM CST), but I'll get some solace from that extra hour of sleep.
I see temperatures in Alaska are getting frigid, I guess it's just a matter of time before a chunk of cold air starts oozing its way southward.

Sportswise: Friday night, Mena traveled south to Little River County to face the always-tough Panthers of Ashdown High. Ashdown (ranked #7 in 4-A) was a solid 17-point favorite. Mena is ranked #35 in 4-A. The Panthers gashed the MHS defense with several long running plays to take a 14-0 lead. Mena fought back and cut the Panther lead to 26-19 with 7:11 left 3rd Quarter. AHS was just too fast and strong in the end and enjoyed a comfortable 47-19 victory. A tough game was made MUCH tougher as Mena suffered 6 turnovers (3 passes intercepted and 3 lost fumbles) in the game. Next Friday night, it's Senior Night as Mena closes out the season at home against long-time rival DeQueen.
On Saturday afternoon, Arkansas played its last non-conference opponent as the Razorbacks hosted (War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock) the Warhawks of U Louisiana-Monroe. UA (ranked #13 nationally) was a heavy 36-point favorite over the weaker opponent. UL-M actually took a 7-0 lead on a game-opening 80-yard Touchdown drive. UA soon got things back in order with several long runs and timely pass completions. The Warhawks were also thwarted as their Quarterback threw 5 interceptions, and UL-M lost a total of 85 yards on 2 bad punt snaps (which gave UA 2 very short scoring drives). UA took a 23-7 Halftime lead on the way to a workman-like 44-10 triumph. The remainder of the season will be against tougher SEC foes. Next week, the Razorbacks play South Carolina in an away game.

Wishing ALL A Great Week~~~Wet Snow
*Recently, UL-M changed their nickname from Indians to Warhawks.
