Hello Folks:

Well, the total temperature drop was 50F--from yesterday's maximum of 67F/19.4C to the low this (Wed.) morning of 17F/-8.3C. That's how I gauge the strength of these Canadian/Arctic cold fronts--by how far the temperature falls, this front was a fairly strong one.

One of the largest recent temperature drops here occurred in 1996: From a high of 61F/16.1C on Jan. 18 falling to a morning low of 5F/-15C on the 19th.

Hello Ezzz & Snowmi: FYI, the lowest temperature ever recorded in Key West, Florida is 41F/5C in January 1981. Tampa, Florida recorded 0.2"/.5cm snow on January 18-19, 1977.

Hello Friends:

4:14 PM CST Thursday. It's been a very nasty Winter day here; we're now getting snowflurries (36F/2.2C, after a 33F/0.5C morning low), has been drizzly and very murky as well. My area is under a Winter Weather Advisory & a Snow Advisory for the rest of the day; although it looks like the heaviest snowfalls will be to my north.
Areas to the east (Louisiana, etc.) are getting severe T-storms with possible twisters.

Temperatures here should rebound nicely as we have a good chance of T-showers/storms on Monday with highs near 70F/~21C.

Cheers~~~Wet Snow

Hi Wet Snow

We had a higher average max in Birmingham last month (9.1C/48.4F) than you had in Mena, I bet that's something that doesn't happen often. Unfortunately there were only 37.5 hours of sunshine (an average of just 1.2 hours per day)

Also, your high min of 16.6C/62F was warmer than any night we had in the whole of 2007 (warmest night here in 2007 was 15C/59F on June 12th)

Have a good February, and let's hope we both get that heavy snowfall we've been waiting for laugh

Another week with some BIG temperature swings. A Canadian cold front passed in the afternoon of the 29th--skies were mostly clear, winds switched from very, very gusty SW to very gusty WNW upon frontal passage (with steadily falling temperatures). A Pacific cold front passed on the 31st. Had AM freezing fog on the 27th; had a brief fall of sleet (ice pellets) on the night of the 30th and had snow flurries as the light rain ended on the 31st. Overall High-abt. 11:50 PM-listed for the 28th (aided by pre-frontal gusty SW winds); Overall Low-abt. 11:45 PM-listed for the 29th; Overall High-12:01 AM and Overall Low-abt. 11:36 PM-listed for the 31st.
We're having another brief warmup (unseasonably high temperatures) before another cold front hits--with T-shower chances--in a couple days. Right now, it's humid--concrete areas are "sweating"--almost 5PM and 65F/18.3C. The cold front will drop the temperatures to more seasonable levels.
***
Hey Steve: I don't think the Daily Rec. High Minimums (or Low Maximums) records are kept for Mena, but I'd figure that the 62F/16.6C minimum on January 7th wouldn't be too far from a record; (those unseasonably warm temperatures--aided by cloudiness and warm SW winds--were ahead of a cold front).
I don't see any prospects for snow in our near future. Our best bet would be a southerly-tracking low (Pacific cold front) or a Canadian/Artic front with good moisture levels. The southerly tracking low on Jan. 31st went just a bit too far north of me and I ended up with rain (parts of N/NW Arkansas had upwards of 5"/12cm of snow).

Cheers & Best Wishes~~~Wet Snow
P.S. We are almost to the mid-point of Winter which is around Feb. 5th (~45 days after Winter began and ~45 days before Spring begins; the seasons in the US are 90/91/92 days in length).

Folks:
Kinda surreal here: It's 8:47PM CST Monday here, humid, SW breezes and still in the balmy upper-60sF/~19C at this late hour. I just stepped outside and I heard some "Spring Peepers" (small frogs) peeping in the adjacent wooded areas---and we're in the middle of Winter!!!

A powerful cold front is approaching and a possible Severe Weather Outbreak is possible in my area--and areas to the East--tomorrow (Tue.)

Truly feels like a Spring night outside.

Folks:

Well, the T-shower/storm line rolled through around 4:35 PM today (Tue.) The line was fairly narrow and moving pretty fast (moving NE at 50mph/80kph); so it passed pretty quickly and by around 5:10PM, the rain was all but over. I copped .80"/20.3mm rain in that time (had another .50"/12.7mm in pre-frontal rain this AM).
Thankfully, the winds weren't very high and we got no hail. The front dropped the temperature from the upper-60sF/~19C to 50F/10C (reported by KENA at 5:41 PM).
A few counties in N Central Arkansas are under Tornado Warnings and my area will continue to be in a Tornado Watch until 8PM CST (now 6:14 PM CST).

I've been hearing about the tornadoes in the southern US and how tragic it was - at least 54 have died. A little unusual for a major tornado outbreak to happen at this time of year, isn't it?

I, for one, hope you don't get a tornado with your town's name on it. But did you get any lightning yet?

I saw the news reports on the tornadoes, a very tragic event.

How rare is it to get tornadoes this destructive in the US?

Hello Mike & Steve:

Yes, tornado outbreaks in wintertime aren't that common, but can happen. The unseasonably warm weather was a big factor in the severity and widespreadness of the storms/tornadoes. Yes, I did cop a time of thunder and lightning as the stormfront passed my area.
I think this episode will likely be the largest February tornado outbreak in US history (as I think 60+ tornadoes were spawned). The twister that hammered Atkins, Arkansas was rated as EF-3.

Thankfully, the very destructive storms/tornadoes were to the E & NE of me (in North Central & NE Arkansas). It's truly sad to see such widespread devastation; going to be quite a big cleanup. It's just a wonder that more folks didn't perish as most of the twisters happened at nighttime.

Wonder if this means an early Spring?
At last count, the death toll is 56, with 13 dead in Arkansas.

Cheers~~~Wet Snow

This week had continued above-normal temperatures, with a cool spell in the middle. Very "Springlike" on the 4th & to midday on the 5th, with humidity, cloudiness and SW breezes (I actually think I saw a mosquito!). The powerful Pacific cold front hit around 4:35PM on the 5th--I copped .80"/20.3mm rain in around 35 minutes. The severe weather/tornadoes occurred to the E & NE of me (I think the lower maximums--due to cloudcover--might have saved my area from the severe storms. The fairly narrow T-shower line moved through my area fairly fast [moving NE at around 50mph/80kph]). Overall Low-abt. 11:47PM-listed for the 5th; Overall Low-abt. 11:10PM-listed for the 6th. I took advantage of the warmth to do a little more pre-Spring yardwork.
Upcoming forecast calls for a mostly dry week with continued above-normal temperatures (where's Winter?)

Wishing ALL a Super Week~~~Wet Snow

This past week was fairly warm--maximum-wise--with some good bouts of rainfall and a couple of nighttime temperature rises. Rain on the 11th was from a stationary front (Canadian cold front stalled just to my north), T-showers on the 12th were from a Pacific cold front (as the weather-pattern continues to have the Southerly Jet over my area--sending us a succession of southerly-tracking lows [Pacific cold fronts]); rain on the 16th was from a warm front (ahead of another Pacific cold front--southerly tracking low--that passed through early this Sunday AM).
Overall High-abt. 11:31 PM (aided by S/SW pre-frontal breezes) listed for the 11th; Overall High-12:01 AM and Overall Low-abt. 10:58 PM-listed for the 12th; Overall High-abt. 11:01 PM (more pre-frontal warm S/SW winds) listed for the 16th. Thankfully, any severe weather occurred well to my south. IF the temperatures had been colder, the rain scenarios this past week would've seen TONS of snow in my area (oh well, mabye next time!)
Upcoming forecast calls for slightly rising temperatures (recovering from todays' cooler weather) with more rainchances later in the week.

Still lookin' for a good SNOW dump~~~Wet Snow

Another week with a warm start and a cool finish, with a continued fairly active weather pattern. A Pacific cold front brought the rain on the 17th; a Canadian cold front brought the light rain on the 21st and the rain on the 23rd was from an upper-level low (brief T-shower late PM. I think one of the thunder rumbles lasted almost 10 seconds!)
The 21st was an especially nasty day: Cloudy, foggy and drizzly with the daytime temperature hanging around the 35F/1.6C-mark. Overall High-12:01AM and Overall Low-abt. 10:58PM listed for the 17th; Overall High-12:01AM listed for the 21st; The High on the 22nd was achieved at 12:01AM and around 4PM.
The first part of the week felt almost Springlike and I'm noticing more patches of green grass (and more purple-top weeds) in the front/back yard.

Tuesday the 19th was my 47th Birthday. Conditions at 12:01 AM on Feb. 19 at Intermountain Municipal Airport in Mena, Arkansas: Clear-no clouds below 12,000FT, Temperature: 39F/4C, Dew Point: 26F/-3C, Visibility: 10miles/16.1km, Wind: 280degrees (West) at 6mph/9.6kph, Barometer: 30.14"/1,021mb-hPa

Like UK Steve, I've just about given up hope on a good snowdump (even though there is around 4 weeks of Winter left).

Wishing ALL A Super Week~~~Wet Snow

Hi Wet Snow, happy birthday wishes for last Tuesday.

Looks like you've had some UK type winter days last week, the weather you had on the 21st and 22nd had happened several times this winter here. We actually had weather that's more common in Mena at times this month with sunny days and large temperature variations (Feb 17th had a high of 8C/46F and a low of -10C/14F)

Spring starts here in the UK on Saturday, and the daylight hours are much longer now (sunrise today was at 7:03am and sunset is at 5:37pm). Daylight savings starts here on March 30th. In June, sunrise will be as early as 4:44am and sunset as late as 9:35pm.

Quite strange as I recorded no Wintry precipitation (snow, snow flurries, sleet [frozen raindrops], ice or freezing fog) for the entire month of February!
Spring officially begins on March 20th, but signs have been around for a while: I'm seeing more patches of green grass (with those tiny white "Spring" flowers), I'm now seeing buds forming on the local trees and I'm pretty sure I saw a flock of geese flying north the other evening. (Daylight Savings Time starts very early this year, March 9th). Guess I'll have to wait until next Winter for the good snowdump that I wanted frown .
Very warm today (Sat.) high near 70F/~21C; a Pacific cold front could give some possibly severe weather tomorrow night and I could cop some snow flurries on Monday night---sounds like Spring!

Wishing ALL A Blessed, Happy, Prosperous and Safe Month of March~~~Wet Snow

Overall, a fairly pleasant late-Winter week. Spring officially begins March 20th, but there are signs of it already (seeing more buds on local trees, etc.) A dry Pacific cold front passed through late PM on the 25th; light rain on the 29th was from yet another (mostly dry) Pacific cold front. Overall Low-abt. 11:57 PM-listed for the 24th; Overall High-12:01 AM and Overall Low-abt. 11:13 PM-listed for the 26th; Overall Low-abt. 11:55 PM-listed for the 29th.
A Pacific cold front is approaching and there could be some possibly severe weather late this (Sun.)evening and overnight; my area could even cop some snow flurries as the precipitation ends on Monday night (heavier snow to the North & Northwest of me). Temperatures should rebound nicely after the front passes and the rain ends. Daylight Savings Time in the US starts very early this year, on March 9th. Sunset now is around 6:14PM.

Folks:

Finally getting a little more "Winterlike" weather. The Pacific cold front rolled through yesterday (Mon.) with fairly steady rain and some thunder rumbles. The temperature fell from 56F/13.3C at sunrise (6:44 AM) to the current temperature now--1:53AM Tuesday--of 29F/-1.6C.
Around 11:30 PM, sleet (frozen raindrops) started to fall (into early this morning).
I looked outside about 5 minutes ago and the SNOW has started to fall (1-3"/2.5-7.6cm accumulation possible).
At various times on Monday, my area was under a Flood Watch, Lake Wind Advisory, Tornado Watch and Winter Weather Advisory---a very weather-active day indeed!
I managed to cop 2.70"/68.5mm rain on Monday--over half the average rainfall for March.

Let It SNOW~~~Wet Snow
P.S. The heavier snow will be to my NW & N, on the northside of the circulation of the low-pressure.

Hey Folks:
Well--Finally!--the conditions came together just right and I copped that good snowdump that I was waiting for.
On Monday, we had quite a bit of rain (2.70"/68.5mm), ahead of an approaching Pacific cold front (southerly-tracking low). Around 11:30PM, sleet [frozen raindrops] started falling--and fell for a good bit. I looked outside around 1AM Tuesday and snow had already started falling. My area was forecasted to cop from 1-3"/2.5-7.6cm of snow, but I didn't get my hopes up, as sometimes the forecasted snowfall is a bust.
Woke up Tuesday and I measured a neat 5"/12.7cm snow here at the house. The system dumped from 6-13"/15.2-33cm of snow on a 25mile/40km-wide line between Mena (in Polk County) NE-ward to Salem (in Fulton County). The low on Tuesday AM was 25F/-3.8C, a bit of melting occurred as the high was 45F/7.2C. Most snow melted today as the high was near 60F/15C.

Hallelujah~~~Wet Snow
P.S. Looks like we might be in for more snow overnight Thursday and into Friday. Bring it on!

Hey Friends:

Well, after having a paucity of SNOW this Winter, looks like we'll be making up for it BIG TIME!

Yet another southerly-tracking low pressure (Pacific cold front) is approaching and my area (& much of Arkansas) will be put under a Winter Storm Warning from 6PM today (Thur.) through much of Friday. Later today, forecasts indicate rain/snow mix, changing to all snow--3-5"/7.6-12.7cm accumulation expected, the low on Friday morning will be near 32F/0C and ANOTHER 3-5"/7.6-12.7cm snow expected to fall on Friday with a high near 35F/1.6C. Looks like I may Really cop it this time. HALLELUJAH!

Currently, 7:44AM CST Thursday, overcast and 38F/3.3C---expected high today near 46F/7.7C.

Bring It On~~~Wet Snow
P.S. My area copped the good amount of snow on Tuesday AM, as the center of the low-pressure tracked to my south--the higher snow amounts being to the N & NW of low-pressure.

Glad to see that you finally got the snowfall that you've been waiting for. I'm not hopeful for any heavy snow here as we're already a week into spring and the chance of any significant snowfall is minimal.

What's the latest date in the year that snow has fallen in Mena? The latest date for snow here in Birmingham was June 2nd 1975, here's a description from the British weather website.

Quote:

Snow fell and lay on high ground in the Midlands on the morning of Monday the 2nd, with sleet as far south as Portsmouth. Gleneagles recorded -3.3C on the 2nd. Famously, snow affected play in the County cricket match between Derbyshire and Lancashire in Buxton: the game was abandoned for the day on the Monday because the snow cover was an inch deep. Snow was reported as fallen at a cricket game at Lords on the same day and over a large portion of East Anglia, accompanied by low midday temperatures (2C). Snow lay on the hills around Birmingham, and was also reported at Portsmouth and Ramsgate. Snow lay for four days in parts of Scotland. This is the latest reliable date on which snow has fallen in lowland Britain, and was an exeptional event, with a return likelihood of 250 years
