Whats your summer rainfall been like?

Parts of the nation have suffered through drought and others through above average rain.

How much rain have you had and how has it affected your local area?

Karl, i think we had around 150mm for summer, we have only had 21mm in march and 6.2mm this month. we need another 138mm if we are to reach our autumn average.

K Chris what are ur figures? They shouldnt exactly set the world on fire. Well so far in April there has been 2mm. Although ur march figures annoy me intensely!!

I wouldnt move to the southern areas, they dont get summer storms like northern areas.... no way.... not a chance..

Figures .... hmmm

Dec = 890
Jan = 755

Oh you are talking about rainfall..

I have no idea probably the same as yours. I dont think there was too many events in the period that we would have differed much on.

Because the whole state got basically nout. If Adelaide are forecast to get storms (and that hardly happened) then they will normall be over the ranges (5km to the east of the city) or over the northern suburbs where (a) its usually 3 degrees hotter than the Southern subs (b) its closer to the northern areas of the state so moisture will reach us first (c) we have hills to our N, NE and E that are much wider.... and prob the biggest reason (d) is that the hills up my way are much further away from the coast so the seabreeze wont destro storms (how many storms do u see pop up on the coast in Adelaide if the day started clear and clouds convected with solar heating? (im not referring to nocturnal storms here as they are aided by things other than solar heating) u see none.

hey ts at least you've had some decent rain events in adelaide in the last few years. i've sat back and watched time after time as nw infeeds slam you guys only to c**p out by the time they get down here.the yabbying's u-s at the moment, most of the swamps have been dry for 2-3 years now,first time in living memory.this is an ag forum so when i post here i'll be trying as much as possible to stick to the theme.the piddling 6.6 mm we got about two weeks ago luckily was not enough to cause significant germination as well as the lack of significantly cold nights and ground temps. required to trigger germination. does anyone think there are any cold snaps on the horizon?the type where day temps. max. around 14-15 with clear calm nights to 5 or under.if germination had occurred significant winter fodder losses would be starting to occur now. farmers are not complaining yet, it can be halfway through may before a break but around here anzac day +\- a week is regarded as the time to break.

Usually, say once ev 2 years, 2 of Adelaide's main reservoirs empty rainlover yet cause SA knows how to manage their water we never need restrictions.

Excuse me Lennie,

I dont think so. Many of our farmers have to rely on the main waters from the dams as the Murray's supply has been diverted to NSW for there own use the second year in a row.

If there was a fresh and plentiful flow through the Murray, then less strain would be placed upon the VIC water supply

There is more farming land around the murray and VIC and NSW than in SA. WE have complete salt pans everywhere, thanksto u blokes nicking our water, the murray is stuffed.

Our Hydrology system is where our knowledge is better, ask Chris about things like this - he's the hrydrogeologist.

Can I step in!

Averaged over 100 years this is how much each state uses:

NSW = 1870GL or 45.5%
VIC = 1600GL or 38.6%
SA = 660GL or 15.9%

As a result SA leads the way in water management.

Further more, due to the earlier miss management of the Murray's water supply, within 10 years Adelaide's drinking water will fail World Health Organisation salinity standards in 2 days out of 5. eek

The bottom line is there are many contributing factors to the lower water quality of the Murray in SA, but part of the problem does stem from the fact that both NSW and VIC take out 3 times more water than Adelaide.

but on 1 of those landcare adds, it says that you guys get most of your water from the Mt. Lofty Ranges, our water company planned where our water storages would be, and no one is allowed to go into the catchments, and because of this, melbourne has the best water of all capital cities in australia, and one of the best in the world, and it is adelaide catchments authorities fault that they didn't have the catchments protected, i know they couldn't have done that with the murray, but with the lofty ones they could have protected them
