Crikey! Super shot there DaveV. I tracked down some great shots at our local library - will try and get them up in the new year.

This snow (as opposed to ski) thread is a little like the Australian Gogomobile Club - there are not many of us, but by geez, we are keen. smile

This reminds me of a great picture in Lithgow Maccas, showing a train covered in thick snow pulling into a snow covered Lithgow station!

I'd love to get a copy of it!

Sounds like a Digital camera might be in order. laugh
Red Rooster over the road used to have some old prints in there also of the railways in that area, but they seemed to have disapeard the last time I was up there.

Was at the local visitors center a few days ago rumaging through the maps on the easiest way up to shooters hill oberon area from here and found the most direct route was up wombeyan caves road eek , anyone who has driven up there knows it takes 2hrs to go 60k's just to get to wombeyan caves, seems as though snow chasing to oberon is out of the question from here....dammit, should have stayed in sydney wink

Hey Blizzard, Andrew, Dave
Great photos. Unfortunately, I can't dig any old snow photos up for Guyra. I will have to wait till I visit there again. I have a book 'mother of ducks' it has some decent snowfalls of the early 1930s.. there is anohter old photo of a snowfall july or august 1919..not very clear.

Here is the Guyra railway station. laugh [img] [/IMG]

Righto, this isn't old but at least the photographer is getting on wink

This is on the way to Oberon from Blackheath in 2001, altitude here about 1000 metres. Adam (the fella here) is the owner of the pics that started this thread - he's a 21 year old local who's family has lived here forever. He also holds the record for the biggest Blackheath snowman of arond 4 metres! Excuse the quality of the pic here, its a digital camera shot of a hard copy pic.

Dave,

You're absolutely right about the WC road - no go. The quickest way for you would be to head down to Goulburn, then head north through Taralga. If you're snow chasing you won't need to go as far as Oberon itself, the areas between Taralga and Oberon are higher and more exposed if it comes to that.

You can get up over 1260m SW of Porter's Retreat or head on from PR for 10-15 mins to either Black Springs (~1210m) or Shooter's Hill (~1350m).

Alternatively you can stay more local between here (Taralga) and nearby Crookwell and get between 1030m and 1050m. The option you take depends on what the setup is - making the decision is half the fun!

Then again if the ECL is deep enough and the atomoshere cold enough you won't have to go far from home. laugh

Andrew.

Thanks Andrew,
Drive to Goulbourn and up Goulburn to oberon road..grumble grumble, but certainly would be quicker than via WC, a nice freeway through WC would be the shot. laugh

I had noticed porters retreat with a few 1200m peaks and thought it may be worth a look how much further is shooters hill from there, as the maps in the IC ran out around porters retreat?, how often does it snow in Taralga?

The locals here have said they get a dusting at least once a year, some report a good fall in 2001 when the local schools were closed for the day and enough falls to cover the roads.

Dave,

The 2001 fall was on the 27th of August [BTW, that of course was a big ECL ]. Pics from Taralga that day are here .

It snows in Taralga several times each year with the average year seeing 3 or so occasions where snow settles to a noteable degree. This all happens much more on the afore mentioned higher ground just behind (west of) the village as we're in a 'hole' tucked into the main range. It's nice having such close proximity to the top of the range.

Shooters hill is a tad over 10KM from the intersection at Porter's Retreat.

Andrew.

Andrew,
Excellent pics eek , it does not get much better than that, you must have had a ball.. that ECL is a text book pattern for fun in this area, pity it doesn't happen to often, have not been to Taralga before but would be interested in a trip up there especially to have a look at what is happening with the Goulburn to Crookwell railway and remnents of it. will dig up the maps for a quick squize over the area.

Great thread -- I've been a bit too busy to check Weatherzone over the past week, but Lindsay's just drawn my attention to it. The old pics are great. I have a few 1965 pics I'll scan, together with an interesting account of the event in the Blue Mountains from a railway perspective. I'll also hunt out an article I wrote eons ago on snow in NSW and see if it's scannable.
