yeh Ted it a pain when the radar goes AWOL ....always when there is rain.....Bowen radar bunged up now for a few days......so you cant really tell what happening ....
But it is showering here at the moment so all is ok...The winds seemed to have died off.Nothing of interest happened all day just a bit of wind......

What a great event for the local area anyone that tell you otherwise well, you need to go and live in Charters Towers for a few years, or better yet go and live near Bellenden Ker maybe then if you get 200mm a day for weeks on end it might satisfy you smile . Widespread totals approaching (over 36hrs) 300mm in the Northern suburbs, 250 in central and eastern suburbs and 200 in southern and western ones. Simply amazing. Well Done to the MESOLAPS model who predicted 470 odd mm over 24 hrs just NE of Townsville, I have no doubt that a 24 hr total would've been close to that out there. As I predicted early yesterday we were going to see widespread 200mm (and over) falls around and in the city. There was an opportunity at one point late yesterday afternoon for a Noah situation but the weak LOW that developed offshore just seemed to keep the flow a little too northerly rather than north easterly.

A spectacular day today King Tides, and gale force winds. I hope you all being weather enthusiasts got to experience a great day today. I was secretly hoping that some of you would've been up running around Castle Hill as well. Oh well not to be.

Seeing the seas as rough as they were was amazing. Then getting up to Castle Hill and leaning against the wind and having it basically keep you up was awesome. Although Ted was whinging like a little girl about his hair and the rain stinging his face (OK maybe by the end it was hurting me as well, but sshhh). We got to see the onset of one rain squall around 12PM up there and the wind became really violent with sustained winds at about 80km/hr and gusts to 100 odd. How the trees were surviving such a barrage was beyond me.

As I mentioned to Ted, weather and people's enthusiasm about it should NEVER come by what's in the gauge. Get out and experience it like it we did and you get to appreciate the fact that its so much more than looking at models, checking your rain gauge and looking at a radar screen (which I often am guilt of as well). I suggest if you're doing nothing early tomorrow and she's still blowing get out to the Strand get up to the Hill and really enjoy what this event has to offer. Stop analysing it from your house/your street/your suburb and see what it really feels like on the front lines as you get blasted by 80km/hr winds even when the rain is only light green or light blue on radar. I guarantee you won't even be thinking about the rainfall intensity, you'll just be wowed.

Today for me will go down as one of my top 10 memorable weather experiences to date, in fact it probably scrapes into my top 5 at number 5. If I sat at home, I reckon It'd just have been another dull day.

Light to moderate rain here again. Very windy still. Definitely seems like something wrong with the radar.

Well I was just out the back fishing trees out of the pool...and its bucketing down again with very strong winds... Unfortunately after making my hubby get off World of Warcraft when we had those storms coming from both directions last week and making him drive up Castle Hill with me at 10pm to see nothing... well I don't think he will let me detour there on our way to work tomorrow... However, if we were to get so much rain overnight that can't get to work ( not sure if this is likely), then I may get back up there.

and thats what i have been doing today aswell nitso, but better for me, not only do i get paid to do it, but i get to show 40 000 odd people every night exactly what i see! its a great feeling when u see big stories like today get to air.
i spent alot of time in railways estate this morning. speaking to residents, so resiliant. salt water inundation all thru their houses, their replies " i just have a beer, nothing else i can do!!", and "well we cleaned up yesterday, we just have to do it again". so many people have said though that this is the worst king tide inundation in 18years. obviously the rain and strong winds making things very difficult.
i parked my work car on tully street, just before the tide peak. within 5minutes the water ahd rose from about 10cm to 40cm up the car. it went up so quick. i have shots of the water rising up over traffic islands and splashing down the other side. wheelie bin being washed down the road. people had their possessions up on bricks to keep dry. and yet truck, after truck after truck kept driving thru the flooding on boundary street to get to the port or out creating big waves.
also went down the end of the breakwater, by this time the tide was going down. but waves had been crashing onto the road near the entertainment centre, as debris was all over the road, and the top of the breakwater itself has been partially washed away. out at the outer port berth, waves were still crashing over the top of the far breakwater. and i had trouble straightening myself into the winds.
i was going to go up castle hill this afternoon, but we had been so busy with work i couldnt get the time to do it.
i also did an interview with doug fraser this morning the BOM. he said the winds are rain will still be strong tonight and tomorrow morning before easing, and that was at about 10am we did that. the funny thing was, the exact time he was mentioning the strong winds hitting the region, a massive gust just about blew us backwards, was pretty funny. great guys at the BOM, give em credit with the staffing levels they have.
i have some pix of boundary street and the bohle river i will post later on tonight.

by the way, i emptied my gauge at 7am with 173mm in it. since then my inner tube has just gone over the by the looks, so probably another 35mm or so.

Stopped again. I am liking the showers out near Flinders Reef. Hopefully they are little heavier and lasts longer.

I went out to Strand today but unfortunately it was low tide. Still pretty good though.

185mm at Paluma Dam. Amazed at the rain they are getting up there.

Okay some pictures from today

Some idiot, cant wait till he wants to sell this car and the thing is a rust bucket

Boundary street i think, pimping in Nitsos car

Some road, but u have to remember this was not sea inundation, we believed that it was from the rain as it came from no where and it was raining moderatly for a while.

House in a back street

Localised flooding

Now this was funny. I told Nitso to drive through it in his commadore cus it wasnt deep. This 4x4 drove through and got stuck hahahaha

Couldnt believe this...

videos to come smile

For Apocalypse... re stationary echoes. Townsville has ranges running either side of the city. Under certain weather conditions like what is happening now, the moist airstream hits these ranges full on providing continual uplift and so continual heavy rain, hence the stationary intense echoes. Occasionally the uplift is so intense that thunderstorms develop with the orographic lifting in the same locations, with no TS's in other locations nearby. Hope this helps..

Nicely done Ted, and well said nitso!! Went up Castle Hill last night, after Mick dropped around for a quick visit. It was like a washing machine up there lol! Wind and rain going every which way. Tried to take some photo's but I think the camera would have been saturated..

Winds gusting up to 72km/h at the AP at the moment.

Sounds like you guys had an absolute ball laugh And I couldn't agree more, getting out there while the weather is happening is really what its all about for sure! I even wrapped bub up tightly today when he wouldn't settle and when for a wander in the wind and rain under a rather unruly umbrella, and he loved it, even dozed off! I'd loved to have had the chance to get up Castle Hill though in those winds it would have been awesome!!

Hope your operation went well Nitso!

*edit* Terrific shots Ted!!!! Just took a while for me to see them 'cause my damn dial up is soooo bluddy slow tonite!
