mabe i should be posting all the Alice Springs weather in here..Its a great start to the season out there...Northern Territory Police say heavy rain around Alice Springs last night has forced the closure of all causeways in the area.

Police say nine people were trapped last night on Larrapinta Drive about 50 kilometres west of the town.

Larrapinta Drive is now closed and people are advised not to drive on the Ross Highway.

Police say people can travel on the South Stuart Highway at their own peril, but small vehicles should not use the road.

They say any drivers who travel on roads that are closed could be prosecuted.

Heavy rain over the interior has eventuated over the last 24 hours, with the Red Centre seeing its best rain over a year.

Watarrka, best known for its proximity to Kings Canyon west of Alice Springs, picked up a massive 77mm - the highest daily rain since February, 2000. For November, it is the wettest day in at least 18 years.

Alice Springs recorded 39mm overnight, in persistent heavy showers which dumped 3 to 5mm per 10 minutes for large chunks of the night. It is the inland city's best rain since January, 2007.

A trough arcing across the interior of the country and dragging tropical moisture from the oceans to the north and up, over the MacDonnell Ranges is responsible for the rain.

With thick cloud and instability persisting over the Centre, more falls of similar magnitude are expected over the next few days as the trough shifts only very slowly north.

Storms will also become more widespread over the Top End as the trough shifts north early in the week.

The Todd is still flowing! Not much rain in and around the town overnight, Most of the weather was around the Giles to Uluru area. The place is greening fast! Bring it on!

Over 50mm at Giles last night! Similar rain throughout the district most likely but not many gauges to pick it up out there unfortunately. Could this be the signal that we are returning to a wetter overall pattern?

Should get another dose of rain this afternoon or tonight at the Springs.

Sounds great...from wz news...Northern Territory police are urging motorists to continue to drive with care in Central Australia today.

Several roads remain closed or impassable due to flooding.

The Tanami Highway, the Maryvale Road, the Santa Theresa road from the Alice Springs airport, the Kintore Road and Namatjira Drive are all impassable.

The Ernest Giles Road between the Stuart Highway and Luritja Road is closed, and Larapinta Drive from Flynns grave to Luritja Road is also closed.

Heavy rains saw hundreds of people stranded west of Alice Springs during the weekend as creeks rose.

A large group of 4WD enthusiasts and their children were forced to spend Saturday night in their cars west of Jay Creek.

One 4WD and a ute were swept off the road by the current.

The manager of the Glenn Helen Resort, Colin O'Brien says some day trippers were unable to get home.

"Those who are not champing at the bit ready to get off and get some international plane connection are mostly pretty happy," Mr O'Brien said.

"We had a full motel which is fairly unusual for this time of year so that's 25 rooms. We had 100 odd guests here."

Mr O'Brien says more than 70 millimetres of rain fell there during the weekend, causing the Finke River to flow.

"It's been a really welcome dump of rain for us. We had some good rain in January, but since then it's been very very dry indeed.

"A lot of vegetation's been dying through the west MacDonnell Ranges and this is very welcome. It should make a big difference to the look of the country," he said.

The Todd River in Alice Springs has run for the second time in a week.

Palm Valley, west of Alice Springs had the highest rainfall of the weekend, recording 116 mm in the 24 hours to 9:00am yesterday.

Kings Canyon had almost 80 mm during the same period.

About half that amount fell in Alice Springs.

The weather bureau says the rain is expected to ease today, with more storms next weekend.

I am missing it all. frown

Palm Valley recorded 115.8mm up until 9am yesterday (16 November). It appears that this was the highest total in Central Australia.
