Shot this last Weds night (26th May) between Lancefield & Tooboorac on the Great Divide, travelling at just over 100kmph through the closed window. Saw some great cloud formations in Sunbury that day, huge white fluffy things against rich blue sky. Cold air & few passing showers that day. Hope you enjoy the sunset, it was truely beautiful as it became a darker red/yellow with a touch of clear blue sky to the N.W.

Actually I wasn't paying attention to any green tinge, but I have noticed it too in the last couple of months. The first time I noticed it was 1 hour after sunset and the southern horizon had a vivid green tinge to it, I thought it was an aurora at first but there is not much chance of seeing one from up here. BTW I did see Venus after these pics were taken (it actually looked nice against the red) but I didn't have my tripod with me, hence no photos frown

If it was an hour after sunset and you were facing south I'd tend to think it was an Aurora. It has been known to have been seen before from about your latitude Astrogen.

I've just been scanning a 22 deg lunar halo I shot in April. To my surprise I just noticed what appears to be 'an exceedingly rare' 9 deg halo inside the 22 deg halo. I'm just checking on the net now for how rare it is. I'll be seeking other opinions about it at meteoros.de forum and from Les Cowley too I hope. I'll post it here shortly.

As mentioned above here is what appears to be a rare 9 deg and 22 deg Lunar Halo combination. The fuzzy blob and small donut ring at the top of the frame is just lens flare. I'm very tempted too digitally remove them, in fact I think I might.

Great images Mick wink

ErnM I was just having a look at your image in Photoshop “hope you don’t mind”
For something different have a look at each channel & see how the colour is depicted in the image.
You can see a lot more, going through the Red, green, blue channels then looking at the mixed image.
Quite interesting. cool

Ray,
Thanks for pointing that out. Yes, the 9 deg. ring shows up most clearly in the Green channel. Interesting how clear the ring shows up then.

The strangest thing to me about these halos is how the 22 deg halo appears to be squashed downwards while the inner 9 deg halo is squashed the other way (inwards on the sides). Weird. Unusual halos (and rainbows) can some times occur like this but seeing them squashed or distorted in the opposite directions seems very weird. I'll be interested to see what Les Cowley can work out from this shot.

I think I must have shot this on the 5th April full moon. Volkl, you have a shot of a solar halo on page 12 of this thread. Do you have a specific date for when you took that ??? I believe it might have been around the same day given the similar conditions at the time. In fact I remember seeing yours and thinking - ah yes, I got a lunar one around that time, but it was still in the camera at the time.

Very interesting all right confused

I am interested in seeing if some one has an explanation for this one.
I will be happy to find out the answer.
Try this to Ern.
Select a channel then go, image - adjust - invert, Then go filter stylize find edges & have a look at each cannel that way it will show the out lines of each colour. Cool!!!!!!

Ray,
Yep, interesting. I'll post a crop of the 9 deg banding (and an enhanced contrast version) on my site shortly and I'll put a link here.

So far I have only found references on the net to SOLAR 9 deg halos and they call them 'exceedingly rare' or 'very rare'. I suspect I have something even more rare here, this being a LUNAR 9 deg halo. Gee, golly gosh !

I didn't see it visually at the time, being very faint but the camera can see things better than human 'Parfoval Vision'.

Just occurred to me that the eliptical distortions are likely to be due to the halo rings being off centre in the frame and using a wide angle lens (35-105 zoom lens set at 35mm).

This was one of the formations in Sunbury on Weds the 26th of May. The air was quite cold with passing showers & the clouds huge & exciting.

This is the sunset that night, shot from inside mobile car (100+kmph) while crossing the Divide.i shot this one through the front window while my daughter was driving with my trusty Jazz Dolphin Didge set at 3.1mp on 'CLOUD' setting. Bought it at Dicksmith on special for 160 bucks last year. Was surprised & delighted at the fun you can have as a passenger travelling at speed. Try some oncoming Mack Trucks in the dark just before they pass! eek {See sunset image approx. 10 mins before this one, 2 pages back in this thread.} :p

This was the Moon here tonight.{31st of May 2004.} Shot it with the same camera through 10X Binoculars. (Hand Held) You can see a crater @ 12 o'clock & a blue tint on left arc. Because the Moon was so bright, it was a white-out on the screen, so i had to move the camera slightly off center of the Binocular eye piece & shoot the divide between too bright & black in order to see anything at all. cool

OK, here is one out of the archives!! We havnt had any weather to photograph lately, and seeing that i am on afternoon shift this week i cant even take a sunset photo!! (i like to fall back on sunsets when there is no weather!)
This was a storm i photographed way back in October, over the NSW snowy mountains.
