Hey guys

I have been really wanting a SLR for a while, and since im earning a fair bit at the moment i was wanting to buy one before the storm and wet season.

The Nikon D40, is being advertised by JB Hi-Fi for $593. This is an entry level SLR im guessing, and im ready for an upgrade. How does this camera go, does anyone have any expierence with this camera?

thanks in advance

I don't know if it has the same sensor as the D80 Ted but my D80 has big issues with amp glow when i get into the longer exposure times on bulb/manual mode. Someone else may know about the D40's sensor??

Ted, hit DP Reveiw's D90-D40 forum, and get the good bad and the ugly from people that use these jiggers...link to forum to follow..

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/forum.asp?forum=1034

there a few options when it comes to entry level DSLR around that price range so have a good look around...and for weather photography Pentax's entry level K200D is weather sealed, has shake reduction and self cleaning sensor (no dust bunnies)...ive got the older K100D and my skill level still hasn't reached its capabilities..

hmmmmmm

i dont know, i was hoping to make a decision by today. Its just frustrating you know, when your shutter only stays open for 15 seconds. Thats the main reason i want to upgrade.

I reckon a D40 would do Ted. There will always be bigger and better on the market. The other one I would look at would be a Fuji S5 Pro, $305 + p&h on Ebay for the body only. You use Nikkor (Nikon) lenses with it so you can upgrade to a Nikon camera down the track if finances and enthusiasm prevail smile From what I've read and heard from a couple of S5 users it is a great portrait camera as it replicates skin tones incredibly well and is also good for taking sunset photos as you avoid the halo effect that you get with other comparable DSLRs. It's touted as a 12.3MP camera but I think with the sensor arrangement it is actually closer to a 6MP, not a problem as that is what you are already looking at. Get yourself a couple of cheap Nikkor lenses and a remote shutter release and I think you'll be more than happy! The amp glow that Chris mentions is more of a problem in the D40X, D80 and D200s. Hope this helps Ted. Oh and I buy gear over Ebay, haven't had a problem to date but I am fairly picky about who I choose to deal with.

Thanks for the help guys

I have decided to wait a bit longer, and get a 2nd job in 2 weeks or so once school has finished so that i can save up for a canon smile

EOS, looks really good and i have always been happy with the canons and am reluctant to cross over....

Cheers
