Hi all,

I've decided trial offering users of WZ photo / picture hosting, on a proper website ... much easier than those "free" ebsites like photobucket etc.

To upload your pics, just go to

http://www.waw.net.au

and click on the "add items" link on the left, then "From Web browser"

If you have windows XP, uploading pics ridiculously easy ... click the "add items" button as before, but this time select "Windows XP" (you only have to do this once). Follow the instructions, download the file, and then uploading pics from your computer is as easy as opening a folder on your computer! If people struggle with this, I might post more detailed instructions ... but it is very easy!

Please be sure to leave comments with each photo (eg. your handle, and photo details).

When you add a photo, it is automatically resized, into thumbnail, sized (max 600x600) versions.

At this stage, if the trial goes well and if people don't abuse the system, I do not envisage ever having to clear out old photos so they will be permanently there. That is of course if people don't abuse it by uploading massive pics. Also, pictures with inappropriate content will be deleted - very much G rated pictures only please, let me know immediately if any inappropriate content is posted. Also I'm currently allowing hot linking from any other website, but might restrict that to WZ only if my bandwidth becomes excessive.

I've set aside 4Gb of web space which should allow hosting of about 10,000, 250kb images and the resized versions.

Anyway, this is just a trial for the moment- it will be interesting to see what my bandwidth will be! but hopefully this will be a handy service to users of WZ ... have a play with it!

Can people please try uploading some images and tell me if they have any problems? I don't care whether they are weather related or not, I just want to know of any problems.

Ok the easiest way for people with Windows XP to upload their pictures is using the "Publishing agent" ...

First thing you need to do is download the registry entry thingo ... just go to www.waw.net.au - click the "add items" link on the right, select "Windows XP" from the tabs in the window that opens up, and follow the two steps ... you only need to do this once.

Once you have downloaded the file- and installed it (just double click on it wherever you saved it), uploading your files to the internet is as easy as opening the folder it is in!

Here is a step by step guide to uploading using the windows xp publishing agent (once you have installed the reg file). Note this looks long- but I've just tried to spell it out as simply as possible, it only takes about 20 seconds (and the upload time).

1) Open the folder with your pictures. If you want to associate your name with your photos, then either rename your files to include your name (before uploading them), or after you have finished uploading them, add your name as comment to the photo. If you have a list of folders on the left (like in this screen shot) http://www.waw.net.au/gallery/d/28-2/s1.jpg then close it and a list of options should appear.
Select the picture you want to put online and Click the "Publish this file to the web"

2) This screen http://www.waw.net.au/gallery/d/33-1/s3.jpg will come up and you can select which pics you want to publish (tick the boxes). Press next and select that you want to publish your pics to "Wild Australian Weather" (note I actually bought waw.net.au as "want a website", but then thought of "What a Week" and "Wild Australian Weather" laugh ) http://www.waw.net.au/gallery/d/35-1/s4.jpg

3) Select next and you will be prompted to enter a password and login name - both are "wz"

again select next, and select "WeatherZone" folder http://www.waw.net.au/gallery/d/39-1/s6.jpg again select next and you will go to this page http://www.waw.net.au/gallery/d/43-1/s8.jpg , you don't need to change anything here- so again select next.

4) Finally, you will be presented with this screen.

This will allow you to automatically resize the photos prior to uploading. Select one of the sizes. This will reduce the file size, and speed up uploading enormously (rather than uploading the full sized image).

Once all your images have uploaded you press finish and will be taken to see your new image/s!

Bloody WZ's ridiculous time limit on editing posts Grrrrr mad Could a moderator please insert this line to my instruction list above?

1) Open the folder with your pictures. *insert* If you want to associate your name with your photos, then either rename your files to include your name (before uploading them), or after you have finished uploading them, add your name as comment to the photo.

James,
Brilliant idea! It makes posting images really easy for just about anyone that has internet access.

Just tried uploading using the "From web browser" method (using FireFox 1.0.7) as a guest and logged in as user "wz", a null image appears in the album. Info appears but no image. Is this by design or a bug? Using the XP "Publish to web" option works a treat.

If possible, would it be better to prevent upload by user guest?

(Feel free to remove the problematic images 20050726ca17[_001].jpg)

I added to your instructions too wink

Thanks Craig- it is a bug, which I am attempting to fix. Uploading via the webform for small files seems to work perfectly ... The annoying thing is that I cannot delete the failed picture. This release of G2 is still beta, so this trial is also a test of its stability.

Craig- I think I've fixed the problem - can you try uploading the same photos via the web-based form again?

As for the guest thing, I wanted to do it as simply as possible for the "non tech heads" but it does make it possible to be abused. I was actually considering having a registration system, so everyone registers their own login name once, and then can upload and automatically have their name associated with their photo ...

but baby steps first- lets see how it works as is smile

Ok I've setup a registration system, so that people can register, login, upload their pics and any photos they upload while logged in, will automatically be associated with their username (which means you won't need to change your file names or anything.)

To register, just click the register link at the top right. Once registered, log in using the login button at top right, or if uploading your photos using the winXP client, use your login details instead of the "wz" details I provided in the instructions.

For the moment, I'll continue to allow anonymous uploading - we'll see how it goes during the week.

Mods if you want to edit the instructions to include this ... be my guest smile
