looks like more weather on the way for Perth.got this from Wz..Storm warning for Perth
Friday June 6, 2008 - 17:44 EST
Fire and Emergency Services have warned storms could hit Perth as early as Monday and say people in the area should start securing their homes.

FESA say simple measures such as clearing out gutters and ensuring yards are tidy could significantly reduce the damage.

It also recommends people stay indoors away from windows, or under shelter when the storm hits.

State Emergency Services spokesman Allen Gale says motorists should take extra care.

"It's important when you're driving on roads to pull over when the visibility becomes poor and turn your headlights on and wait until the storm passes," he said

better make sure to unplug the computer...

my dog who is 9 goes crazy barking and whining every time we have storms... telling it to be quiet does nothing... i suppose the best thing to do is ignore it? are all dogs like this in t storms or just mine?

After monday looks like more fine weather.... i hope this is wrong and a front comes through on ednesday and thursday and proves the models wrong.

these dry spells are annoying when we are in a month of an average of 177mm... and we get fine weather for a week... like imagine darwin in the wettest month of the year going for 2 weeks of fine weather then ....

not sure what we will get on monday, weatherzone/elders says an 80 percent chance of 5mm and yet on the synoptic maps it looks like a strong front.

the ocf is stuck on yesterday mad

SEVERE WEATHER WARNING
for Flash Flooding and locally destructive winds
People in the Southwest District and Lower West District, including the Perth
metropolitan area, Mandurah, Bunbury and Busselton are advised that a Severe
Weather Warning has been issued for flash flooding and locally destructive winds
for the period from midnight tonight through to the hours leading up to sunrise
on Monday.
Issued at 5:45 pm on Sunday 8 June 2008

A cold front is rapidly approaching the west coast and is expected to cause
heavy rain that could result in flash flooding commencing after midnight tonight
in western parts and affecting the Perth area in the hours leading up to
sunrise. The FESA-State Emergency Service advises that driving conditions may be
hazardous. Should flash flooding occur, avoid flooded roads, water courses and
floodways until safe to proceed. There is also the risk of thunderstorms that
may result in locally destructive wind gusts to 125 kilometres per hour that
could result in damage to property. The FESA-State Emergency Service advises
that people should secure loose objects and stay indoors when strong winds
develop. Boat owners should ensure that small craft are securely moored.

The next warning will be issued by 9:00 pm Sunday

Storm damage to Tanby Aged Care Hostel at Cooloongup. - ABC
A severe cold front over the southern half of Western Australia has damaged more than 130 homes in Rockingham, south of Perth.

The State Emergency Service has received calls for help from residents in suburbs including Rockingham, Safety Bay, Waikiki and Cooloongup.

The calls follow strong winds and heavy rain in the area.

There are reports of roofs being blown off houses, fallen trees and fences, smashed windows and localised flooding.

The Tranby Hall aged care hostel in Cooloongup has been evacuated because of roof damage.

The wild weather has also brought down power lines.

Western Power says 13,000 homes are without electricity.

Most of the homes are in Rockingham area, but blackouts are also affecting homes in Beechboro, Belhus, Caversham and Gooseberry Hill.

State Emergency Service personnel are evacuating residents from Tanby Aged Care facility in Cooloongup.

The hostel is without power or water after the roof of an activity room was blown off.

Linda Sherwood from the home says one resident had a lucky escape.

"It was about seven-thirty, I was just about to start the medication round, and then I heard a loud bang, I turned around and in the corridor was a piece of roof, I suppose, sitting on the floor and I saw the roof collapse," she said.

"Then I walked up here and one of our residents was around here, and she wasn't injured which is lucky."

Tornado hits Perth's southern suburbs
Monday June 9, 2008 - 14:08 EST

The Bureau of Meteorology confirms a tornado was responsible for widespread damage in Perth's southern suburbs. - ABC

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) says a tornado is responsible for damaging more than 130 homes in Perth's southern suburbs today.

Joe Courtney from the Weather Bureau says the storm has left a trail of destruction.

"The damage has all the hallmarks of being a tornado," he said.

"Just after 7:30 a front went through the area, and it seems like a very narrow swathe of destructive winds caused the damage we've seen this morning."

Come on WW! It didn't happen in Sydney or Melbourne so what gives you the idea that severe damage in Perth is actually more newsworthy than some half cut under age kid car driver falling off a road in Sydney!
Get real man!

No surprise, these tornadoes happen with almost every strong cold front with embedded convective cells arranged in a squall line of sorts. That is pretty much how classic cold front tornadoes form, usually F0-F1 and very rarely stronger. Enough however to cause damage as we have seen. I even saw some footage on ch 7 I think it was of the actual tornado and as expected they are almsost invisible. very very hard to see, just pretty much swirling debris specks as it moves through. They are pretty much brief organised vorticies on the leading edge of a squall line. But different to gustnadoes, much stronger generally than those.

TS cool

BTW, there is a local term for these tornadoes that come through Perth - old-timers call them "Cock-eyed Bob's". Well at least I think its a local term - I've never heard anyone but locals call them that. I wonder where that term came from??

I went outside during monday mornings storms at about 4am and heard what sounded like a goods train above the wind, which was very strong at this point. I had heard that tornadoes are supposed to sound like that although I didnt actually see anything.

I live in the hills on the darling escarpment, where there are very sparsley distributed houses, and the noise was coming from the national park just across the road. Is it possible that it may have been a tornado, or just particularly strong winds? Or was I just imagining it? :p

I've always known 'cockeyed bobs' as being more like willy willys or dust devils.

There was some nasty damage done in that tornado. I got to see a lot of it first hand as our SES unit was sent up to the big smoke to help out.

wonder if this will bring another tornado...WA residents warned to prepare for wild weather
Saturday June 14, 2008 - 12:48 EST
Residents in the south and lower-west of WA are being urged to secure their homes ahead of strong winds and rain forecast for the weekend.

The Bureau of Meteorology says another cold front will hit Perth and the south-west coast tonight.

SES Metropolitan District Manager, Grant Pipe, says people need to make sure there are no loose objects lying around.

He says last week's severe storm left a trail of destruction which will take months to repair.

Mr Pipe says people should have an emergency kit prepared and ensure they have adequate insurance.
