Unstable weather not a sign of the times Sam Terry, Tuesday September 7, 2010 - 17:45 EST
On a day when Australia's parliamentary stability has increased, the stability of the nation's weather is on the decrease, proving that the two are not linked, at least not proportionally.
A cluster of storms has been raging over the southeast corner over WA, gradually moving into SA. Cloud from these showers and thunderstorms has been caught in strong winds aloft and spread over SA like a blanket.
The widespread cloud has delivered a remarkable outcome: a cold September day for inland SA.
Ernabella barely saw the mercury move as showers kicked in from mid-morning. All in all about 16 millimetres has been recorded, their wettest day since April and the third wettest day this year.
Ernabella's maximum was also quite notable. Topping at only 14 degrees, this was their coldest September day in 13 years of records.
Coober Pedy, in the heart of the state, was also quite cool for this time of year. The temperature there only reached 17, the coolest September day in five years.
Tomorrow, the cloud continues to spread east, keeping temperatures unusually cool for this time of year. The unstable conditions will also persist, bringing a few storms to eastern SA.

Most unusual to see Perth top 28C before Sydney in spring, this is quite a significant event. We have a chance at passing 30C on Monday though.

It feels like every time the rain is meant to come in Perth from may - september it doesn't or if it does we are way below average. Each year it is pretty much the same. Then also it seems each year we are dry it is rubbed in our face when it is pouring over east.
This has been a shocker of a year. We started off with a record dry summer where all summer the sum total of total rainfall was an almost unmeasurable 0.2mm. We then had a small bit of rain in April. March was a freak qld like storm that got us up to average by the way. May was like every other may since 2005 (2005 was the last record wet May) where it was bone dry.
Only 1 month this year we have reached the average for that month.
We have had the hottest and driest summer on record, the second driest winter on record, the sunniest September on record, the coldest minimum temperatures this year on record due to lack of cloud.
We are over 400mm short of rain this year. Alice Springs is wetter than us wtf !!! ???
Anyone who thinks global warming and climate change is a load of crap come to WA, our dams will be empty if next year is similar , probably will be 17 percent by next may assuming they drop 15 percent over summer like last year. Also the farms here are dustbowls, meat prices are expected to rise, though they may import meat from interstate.
It is not fair, surely 2011 will be a wet year for Perth 800mm + or at least 700mm or more ?
Since the year 2000, only 2 years have been average
2003
2005
that means 8 have been cruddy.
Interesting that the dams were 50 percent or over last year and last year was only slightly wetter than this year.
We just haven't recovered here in Perth in 2010 from our dry summer , dry autumn, dry winter and so far dry spring, the dams are drying and lowering, the groundwater hasn't been replenished, lakes will not be full from a normal winter .
On a final note (this post should make up for the lack of posts from me for a while), water restrictions for Perth will now be (as said on the news)
2 days a week with sprinkler system based on house number is now 1 day a week (until end of spring)
hose water as much as you like no restrictions.
end rant and end post

Western Australia sweats through extended heat Micaela Weber, Friday September 24, 2010 - 17:32 EST Perth has been feeling the heat lately as temperatures soar above average, bringing a record spell of springtime warmth.
A high pressure system over the interior of the country has been directing dry easterly winds towards Western Australia and caused another day with above average temperatures throughout the state.
Perth has seen four consecutive days above 25 degrees, the longest warm spell in September in 16 years of records.
Areas right across the state have been feeling the heat. Carnarvon in the Gascoyne reached 33 degrees today, which is eight above the average and the warmest day since autumn.
The weekend outlook for Western Australia looks not too different and high temperatures will continue to dry out the state. Although a front is clipping the southwest today, temperatures will rebound tomorrow in clear skies and dry conditions at the weekend.

Perth's driest September in six years Brett Dutschke, Tuesday September 21, 2010 - 18:46 EST Perth is on target for its driest September since 2004 with no rain in the past week and a half and very little rain to come.
There has only been 44 millimetres so far this month, less than half the monthly average.
With no rain recorded in the last nine days, this has also become the longest September dry spell in 10 years. In September 2000 there were 10 consecutive dry days.
The previous longest September dry spell was 13 days, in 1994. The September record is 17 consecutive days with no rain, set in 1987.
If Perth doesn't register any rain by the end of the month then it will be the longest September dry spell in 130 years of records.
This comes after one of the driest winters on record, in contrast to eastern states where it was one of the wettest winters in more than a decade.
A near-stationary high over the Bight has meant Western Australia's southwest and west coast has been in dry southeasterly or easterly winds since September 13th.
The high is finally budging so we are in for a period of relatively warm northeasterly winds and afternoon sea breezes.
If forecasts come true then Perth will equal the September record of six days in a row of 25 degrees or warmer.
