Shocking wind here in Carnarvon, WA. It has been like this for the last couple of days. Tonight it feels like the roof is going to blow off, I'll be glad when it calms down. frown

Still pretty blowy but not as bad as last night. This week is looking quite warm with lows of 20C and highs in the 30C range. Summery days at last!

The winds dropped a fair bit and the days are lovely. The sea water has warmed up a lot making my daily plunge much more enjoyable. The nights are pleasantly mild and good for a stargazing walk along the Fascine. Nice being here at the moment.

Looking at the totals , looks like Fu described it perfectly. Mostly 0.2's and 0.6's etc atm. Look like the totals we get from an "ėvent" here in Melbourne. Onto the next one I guess..

Breaking Weather News - Heat and thunder reach southwest WA
Brett Dutschke, 20 October 2008

The southwest of Western Australia is experiencing October heat not seen in many years.

Perth is having its warmest two-day October spell in 47 years, reaching 33.5 degrees yesterday and 34.6 today. A little to the south, Dwellingup exceeded 30 degrees two-days running for the first time in October in 39 years. To the north, Pearce broke an October record, exceeding 34 degrees two days in-a-row.

Jandakot, in the Perth area reached 35.3 today, its hottest October day in 12 years.

The unseasonable warmth reached the southwest capes where Cape Leeuwin had their warmest October day in 36 years, reaching 30.

Some got some relief from the heat by getting under a thunderstorm, but these were mainly south of Perth where it's not as hot. The storms have been pretty light bringing little rain. Busselton received four millimetres and Shannon two.

Storms will increase over the next few days.

Breaking Weather News - Perth endures warmest October night in decades
Brett Dutschke, 20 October 2008

Perth residents have just tolerated their warmest October night in 29 years, warmer than 21.3 degrees all night, 10 degrees above average. The highest minimum for October is 22.2 degrees in 1979.

Throughout the Lower West overnight temperatures were seven to 13 degrees above average. Record high minimums were broken at Gingin, Jandakot and Medina, all 22 degrees. In the Central West Morawa (24 degrees) and Badgingarra (21) broke records.

The warmth was due to it being so hot yesterday then cloud and gusty easterly winds persisting all night.

It's rare for an October night to stay warmer than 20 degrees in Perth, only seven times since records began in the city in 1897. All seven occurrences have been since the 1950s, an indication of a not-so-small city generating its own warmth in what is known as the urban heat-island effect.

The next few nights will become progressively cooler.

Bit of action on radar out to sea and also north east of Perth. Hopefully it can fill in a bit for you but I suspect it might be a little hit and miss. Time to cross the fingers.

I think making a connection between the warm nights in Perth and urban heat islands is drawing a long bow - if anything the Perth Metro data set shows a "negative UHI" because of the 1992-93 move from a central city location to a golf course at Mount Lawley, although the effect of the site change is much greater on cold nights than it is on warm ones.

Well a pretty good line of storms have formed in the clear air behind large cloud area. Presumably where the NE and E winds are meeting the Westerly change behind the surface trough. Cunderdin 93km/hr wind gust and 4mm of rain is a pretty good little storm! Katanning has had 13mm from another. Great looking satellite atm. Some more rain later in the week for coastal areas at least so not a bad outlook.

Most likely "miss"... really the only wet stuff is going to be friday...

regarding friday... i found this...

Friday will see a frontal band move over the southwest of the state. Isolated
showers will increase about west coastal parts during the morning, with
scattered showers extending inland during the day, reaching the southwest
Gascoyne, southwest Goldfields and west Eucla by evening. Isolated showers are
likely over southern and central parts of the SW Land Division ahead of the
front. Moderate falls expected in the west with the front, grading to lighter
falls in far northeastern parts. Isolated thunderstorms are also possible for
the Southwest district and adjacent parts in the cooler unstable airflow behind
the front. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over far eastern parts of the SW
Land Division, southwest Goldfields and adjacent Eucla associated with the
surface trough ahead of the front will gradually contract to the southeast
during the day. Apart from isolated afternoon and evening thunderstorms in
northwest coastal parts of the Kimberley, the rest of the State should be fine.

bom was wrong today... said 28 initially and unsettled... was about 33 and it was partly cloudy. laugh
