Well Ive left it to the last minute for someone to start a thread for SA and tyhey havent so I'll do it again.

Two systems are on the cards, the 2nd one IMO being far more impressive. As ive said before I dont believe the patchy rainband tomorrow is going to offer us very much at all, only areas in the NW of the state will receive any real benefit but not many people live out there. Currently a large cloudband is located over the NW and west of the state and over eastern parts of WA associated with an upper trough and jet stream. A small surface low is forming but will weaken rapidly as the whole system heads SE. Isolated thunderstorms are likely and have alreadu occured for the NW, see Giles radar for cells atm. 23mm at Mt Bold today wherever that is lol, falls will die off as the whole thing weakens and heads SE. Adelaide will see light patchy rain on and off during the afternoon and evening and also overnight. Falls pretty light mostly 2-5mm Id say isol 10mm and maybe 15mm ranges but nothign special. No thunder for us.

The second system seems far more impressive and will deliver the goods for farmers looking for a boost on their crops. with leftover moisture still lingering in the atmosphere from the previous system, frontal lift coming from a strong cold front another rainaband looks likely to form and altho this wont be large as the current one, it will give better totals to southern ag areas than the 1st, cloud base will be lower, general depth of clouds will be greater so rain should be heavier and not so patchy. Falls with this could be 10-20mm southern ag areas maybe 30mm ranges. Showers wil follow this change more so later tuesday behind the rainband which should arrive early on tuesday. Could see thunder with this front, it is quite strong but more likely embedded rumbles, if any.

TS cool

TS,
Mt Bold got caught up in that narrow rainband yesterday and is the reservoir just out of Clarendon & Kangarilla.

Teckert posted some pics of the band B4 it hit the ranges over the southern suburbs in your last SA topic.
Cheers laugh

Some reasonable totals so far from the low pressure trough.
Nullarbor 20mm
Ernabella 19mm
Coober Pedy 15mm
Ceduna 10mm
Roxby Downs 8mm
Oodnadatta 7mm
Leigh Creek 6mm
Minnipa 6mm
Tarcoola 5mm
Woomera 5mm

I like the addition to the notes on the weather this morning.
"Cumulative rainfall amounts until Wednesday night are expected to be around 20 to 30 mm [if not higher] in most districts."
And an interesting note in the aviation forecast: RAIN LOCALLY HEAVY AFTER 02Z. Although still probably an hour or so away from Adelaide atm.

Just been on the phone to my cousins at Whyte-Yarcowie (south of Peterborough - near Terowie). Their altitude is about 700m and it is currently snowing at their house but not settling!!!!
Apparently though they have accounts of snow throughout the southern Flinders and settling in many areas!!!

Well I'll be! Snow in SA in a northerly! eek In most cases you'd expect snow on the Flinders/Mt Lofty's in a southerly/cold outbreak, but this is just phenomenal. Woomera and Adelaide soundings showed the freezing level below 800 hPa this morning and lapse rates below that negligible (so surface temps aren't much higher which we all know). Yongola (515m) reported rain & snow at 11:30 CST with a temp of 2.9°C. Record low maxes look like being broken at numerous sites - Marree, Strathalbyn, Yongola, Broken Hill...many will depend on the temps tomorrow morning though.

I just looked at the isobaric chart, and the wind couldnt possibly come from any further north. Its a due northerly in SA at the moment. Could this be an indication of whats to come when the wind swings around to the south/west? wink

Another thing to note is how far south the winds are coming from that are about to slam into southern WA. Could it snow in WA on the stirling rangers i wonder???

What's interesting is that there was a significant cooling the lower parts of the atmosphere prior to the snow but the wind direction was NE, which seems a bit weird.

From the 3pm maxes, 24 sites reported record low maxes - potentially 39! eek A lot will depend on the temperature at 9am tomorrow for quite a few of the sites. Arkaroola reported a max of 6, nearly 13 below average. Marla was the closest to its average of 21.6, reaching 21 (rounded)
