Started this thread as Lennie is out fishing!! :p Plus the other thread will cover more about flippin' snow than anything thats relevant over here.

After yesterday's prelude of hail and storms this event is shaping up as the best winter outbreak this year. That cold pool hitting WA coastline looks like will smack us head-on tomorrow morning causing heavy showers, hail and storms. Should get 10-30mm across all agricultural areas by Friday. Maybe even higher totals in the hills and SE.
Thicknesses are as low as I've seen them in years over us, although they have been downgraded a bit. BOM still suggesting snow on higher ground in the Flinders on Wednesday night but I reckon chance on the Adelaide Hills as well.
TT's are also the highest I've seen with most of the state in the 60's and up to high 60's in the south. All up the system shows a lot of promise and so far models have all held it together and it looks like it should pay off. Should be some wet and wild weather in the next 72 hours.

Initial showers should start appearing in Adelaide area soon after dark tonight I think before the main stuff arrives in the early hours of tomorrow. Another front is then due on Thursday before a short fine spell over the weekend.

Hi Tim,

Well I hope this system(s) does deliver as I purposely chose tomorrow to go out into the field! Last week I remember looking at the models and chose Wednesday and Friday to head up into the Mt Lofty Ranges and obtain some Flow readings from a selected rivers and creeks. We need some good rain so I can get some upper limits on the flow and hence calculate stream saltloads and catchment water budgets and balances for flood control purposes.

Bring it on!

Cheers,

Chris

WELL! Im back from fishing and not a happy chappy, not only did we catch nothing apart from algae all the time and some stupid crabs (one also caught my toe mad ) but the one day, (Murphy always strikes) I leave teh city, is the one day we score a spanking hailstorm. Mum kept some stones and i was shocked at their size, a few of them were 2cm, which is severe, I couldnt believe it. Only 1.5mm in gauge and she said no thunder here. I saw about 3 or 4 flashes 5mins apart about 50km wswish of the Murray Mouth/Goolwa beach area.

Bring on 2moro.

Hi,

I only have seen strong wind and a moderate fall around mid western suburbs when Steven and I were heading to his place at Pennington. It was a cold front change I noticed when we were closer to line of shower. Turbulence base observed. Clouds were from altocumulus to cumulus. Thats all I have seen. Will see how it goes tomorrow for showers and maybe hail with cold and windy. I won't see much because I have TAFE tomorrow from 1pm. Bugger. Oh well I hope other of you might have chance to take photos.

From Nathan.

Well it's taking it's time getting here. Has really slowed down a lot. Aviation forecast has the front only arriving in Adelaide around 9am.
Should see some showers before the front however so not sure what time to get up lol... working tomorrow so the earlier I get up the more action I can get before leaving for work.

Twister, you up?? Keep any eye out to your north... storm only 50kms away atm heading SE.
That moisture in the nth is starting to produce some showers and storms from out Tarcoola way right through to NSW.
The moisture plume NW of us here is interesting. It is headed our way and will make things interesting if it gets here as the front does...
Anyway, I'm off to bed. Prob get up at 4am to see whats happening.

quite bizarre, the cloud on the animated loop appears to be moving down from the north here in vic, i normally only see that happen in summer, quite a bit of static on the radio again tonight, i suspect there are more storms about here than are showing on the tracker eek

Well myself and a collegue are not too keen on heading out now.... So far there has been very little rain. The radar is not showing much either....

Should have known that this was an "Adelaide Special"!

Yep Chris, so far bugger all. Seems to be plenty of moisture around in the lower levels though. Dunno why its not raining actually.
Coldest air comes through tonight so we will see how the day pans out. It does seem EP coast is the best place to be. frown
Certainly we wont get anywhere near as much rain as those in VIC and NSW. frown
I'm off to work shortly so no chance for me to see anything anyway lol....

Nothing to report apart from a shower at about midday, got 0.5mm from it. We are getting a freezing cold wind, cbs galore, which as they make it to us, cark it and turn into pieces of Cs and As...the whole sky is full of dead cbs....frickin joke...

Finally a decent rain shower!
Lots of small hail, no wonder too as the outside temp has dropped to 4.7 degrees with a windchill of 0.6! laugh

Got back from the field,

Near Mt Torrens, the coldest temp i recorded on the kestral was 3.2c with a wind chill of -4.7c. Had a wind gust of 45kts too! Loads of small hail around, and i mean small as you see them float through the air and then melt together to form a water droppelt on the ground... not far away from being sleet i suppose!

Temperature at 25,000ft over Port Augusta this afternoon was -45C. Coldest I can ever recall seeing at this altitude. Our power charts only go to -40C ... bit of exterpolating required.

We even had a contrail - a shadow on the cloud tops below - bit faint by the time I took a snap. Not often seen behind a SAAB smile
