Gonna be a very interesting day for sure! Up until about half an hour ago, it had failed to go above 14.8C. Now that's the sun is out, it's 17.6C... and rising.

Still, regardless of the temperature reading, there's no denying it... it is cold! Even indoors it's a bit chilly, the price we pay for running the air-con during the recent scorching summer heat... only to have this mighty Antarctic cold front slam head-on into Victoria!! eek crazy

Lots of heavy showers (and the odd thunderstorm) around Melbourne. We've had a few decent downpours here in Belgrave since my last post, with another 4.2mm of rain collected. No hail, thunder or lightning or strong wind to report yet, although we had wind-driven heavy rainfall down in Dandenong earlier this morning. Hoping the 'bay-effect' can kick into gear today, especially if winds can swing southwesterly later! smile

Looking back through my stats, assuming it doesn't beat my 19.4C maximum set on February 13th 2017, then today is more than likely to be my coldest February day on record! Up until six days ago, my previous record low max for February was 20.4C set on February 22nd 2014 and again on February 16th 2016.

As for the record low min for February, the current record stands at 8.5C, again set this year (February 15th). The old record was 8.6C on February 28th 2014. Let's see if I can beat that record tonight! wink

And as far as my overall summer records go for Belgrave, since I started record-keeping...

Record low summer maximum: 14.5C (December 5th 2013)
Record low summer minimum: 6.3C (December 6th 2013)

For December:
Record low maximum: 14.5C (December 5th 2013)
Record low minimum: 6.3C (December 6th 2013)

For January:
Record low maximum: 16.6C (January 29th 2016)
Record low minimum: 9.5C (January 22nd 2017)

For February
Record low maximum: 19.4C (February 13th 2017)
Record low minimum: 8.5C (February 15th 2017)

Edit: just nudged 19.0C and still rising.

And here's the BOM stats (minimum and maximum temperatures and rainfall totals - 24 hours to 9am yesterday and again today) for my day trip to the Bass Coast yesterday:

Melbourne (Olympic Park):
13.3C / 18.9C / 0mm / 0mm

Scoresby:
13.6C / 19.7C / 0mm / 0mm

Ferny Creek:
9.7C / 15.8C / 0.6mm / 0.4mm

Cranbourne:
12.4C / NA / 0mm / NA

Wonthaggi:
12.8C / 18.9C / 0.8mm / 7.0mm

Pound Creek:
12.7C / 18.5C / 1.4mm / 6.0mm

The wind change is coming through now. Overcast, dark and gloomy; the radar shows a line of heavy showers stretching from Western Port to the Kinglake area moving in, may get a thunderstorm with it. A bit of a guster appearing, but nothing overly exciting, and it just started raining about 5 minutes ago. Not very windy though, only a few gusts from the west so far to show that that change has arrived. poke

Peaked at 19.4C an hour ago, tying with February 13th as my coldest February day on record. Currently around 15C and falling. poke

Edit: heavy rain now! smile

Sun's back out here in Belgrave, the shower/storm line only lasted around 30 minutes. Collected a mere 1mm of rain, no strong wind, hail, thunder or lightning. poke

Temperature dropped to 11.6C as the change moved through, still only around 12C. poke

I got a wonderful singular thunderclap here in abbots Ford, with the sun out, after 20 mins rain and some pea sized hail.

Turns out I was wrong. Based on the observations around Melbourne, the wind change is ACTUALLY coming through Belgrave now! My bad. poke

Anyway, just had a sun shower! No rainbow unfortunately, the Sun's at the wrong angle. Still pretty exciting, the weather just loves to pull surprises. wink

Collected yet another 1.1mm of rain, so 6.3mm since 9am, and 8.5mm for this event in total. smile

Currently 14.7C.

Awaiting to see if the "bay-effect" can now work its magic! wink

Still waiting here. 2 or 3 spots. Very dark, scattered cumulus (?). Temp dropped significantly and suddenly with SWly wind change about 3.30. Bairnsdale radar not working so hard to gauge how likely showers/rains is.

Interestingly, this area is developing a noticeable rainfall deficit; though there's some green in many paddocks and on road verges we are starting to experience a dry which (in conditions like this in this area), commonly stretches through March. I'll be interested to see the deficit/anomalies for Dec/Feb when it comes out.

Took a picture of a funnel cloud to my south heading towards the bay area! Very skinny and receded back up into the atmosphere in a matter of seconds. Super cool!

Was 24C according to the car at here 1:30pm, then only 13.5 C at 5pm on way back from working at Royal Maffra this arvo...

Went from Tshirt to flanny/jumper/raincoat (1.25mm rain) over remainder of the afternoon.

Currently experiencing frequent light showers in light SW'ly breeze. Ridiculously cold for middle of Feb!!!

Soil temp is 19C, so any rain we can accumulate tonight will be a boost.

Whats the chance of getting a circa 42C day in these N Gippy parts for the rest of this summer season???

I would say about as much chance as getting snow in Singapore.

WOW!!!! That was intense!!! The "bay-effect" certainly worked its magic, granting my wish! I definitely live in an area that is prone to direct-hits from storms... when they occur! =D

About 5:45pm, I wasn't sure what to make of the radar, and I was too busy listening to music and doing computer work, but then my family mentioned "thunder". I went outside and behold! grin

A huge cumulonimbus had erupted just to our west, thrusting out a rock-solid anvil, but a string of exploding cumulus congestus towers stretched east from it, bearing down on us!

The base of these towers was pitch-dark, with an exceptionally-angry shelf cloud with violent turbulence and rotation galore underneath it. Plenty of fast-moving, boiling wind-torn clouds, as if a tornado was hiding inside the storm! On radar, these towers were quickly flaring into storm cells that extended off the main one in progress just to our west; in fact these cells were all part of a rapidly-developing line of storms that stretched from Mount Disappointment (between Kinglake, Whittlesea, Wallan, and Seymour) down to Warragul, then south to Korumburra and Leongatha.

No lightning visible, but some deep-booming thunder off in the distance.

It got extremely dark as the storm cloud raced overhead around 6pm, but surprisingly only a few gusts of wind! Then it started raining, and then over the course of about 20 minutes one of the most violent 'coldie' thunderstorms I've even witnessed let loose! Some gusts of wind, but otherwise plenty of dangerous lightning strikes (on average once or twice a minute), loud thunder, torrents of rain, and an incredible amount of hail! grin

The worst of the storm cleared by around 6:20pm, but the rain continued for another 20 minutes or so. A faint rainbow when the sun came out. smile

Collected 11.6mm of rain from the storm (and showers that followed immediately behind it), with the peak rainfall rate being 86.9mm/hr. A lot of hail accumulation on the ground, taking on the appearance of snow! Most of it has melted, although in sheltered spots there's still piles of hail remaining, particularly amongst the grass. smile

We had to switch off the Internet as that was one of the most dangerous rounds of lightning I've ever been through! eek

The temperature fell from around 16C to 10C as the storm swept through.

Since the storm, we've had a few more showers come through, some heavy. In total, we've collected 20.0mm of rain since 9am! smile

We lost power for about 5 minutes around an hour ago.

Also had a stunning double rainbow over the past 45 minutes just prior to sunset! grin

And I just heard a rumble of thunder from a storm to our south near Cranbourne. More stormy weather likely during the night. wink

Currently around 9C.

Pics to come on my Instagram soon, especially of the violent thunderstorm, the hail, and the double rainbow. smile
