I was wondering what the price of bananas are in Qld at the moment . Here in W.A the last couple of months

Canarvon Bananas at their cheapest are 4 dollars for a 750g bag (on special !)they still work out at around 5.50 a kilo.

Supermarkets and greengrocers seem to have all the same price and qld bananas here are 6 -7 dollars a kilo !

Is this Australia wide. There hasn't been a cyclone like a few years back... is it anything to do with the dryer weather up in the tropics (is it dryer and less rain than usual) and the banaana crops are dying?

Bananas are usually 2 dollars a kilo or maybe 3 at the minimum at the greengrocer. I haven't seem that at that price anywhere unfortunately.

Might have to start eating something else like apples lol.

Its the great banana conspiricy Vinny.

Here in Townsville for example our bananas are grown about 262klm north of us, they then go to Brisbane to market, are bought by the buyers for coles woolworths etc and then shipped all the way back to us again.

Hint Townsville to Brisbane is 1334 kilometers x 2 plus 250 = 2930 kilometers on the road before we get to buy them. That plus supermarkets are greedy bustards. Thats why our bananas are so expensive and I beilieve that may also be the case over in the west. ooh and just in case you think thats silly here we are sitting in amonst a region flooded in mango plantations and guess where some of our mangoes come from? Canarvon. Go figure.

That is a classic example of food miles adding costs to a finished product. Why the supermarkets can't buy local produce locally is beyond me but what would I know?

They claim it is a supply v's demand issue but it may be just supermarket propaganda. AKA greed.

Because Australia doesn't import any fresh fruit or veg it can grow itself, regardless if it's at a much higher price sourcing locally.

Prices steady here at $3.99/kg.

That's ridiculous. I would love a banana but at the prices they are now, forget it.

Just my opinion but I think it is disgusting how the government refuses to import bananas from places like Singapore during the months after cyclone Larry. To expect people in other states to pay up $10 a kg for below standard bananas from north QLD when you can get superb quality bananas from overseas for 20% of the price was just not right at all. Their are struggling families down here trying to make ends meet and they make them pay a massive amount of money to just a eat a very simple fruit like a banana! I fail to see why Victorian families should cop the fallout of a QLD problem when there is a fantastic viable alternative!

I think the importing is due to reducing the risk of disease (for nana's) as we have our own major industry. When I was in NZ, they imported them from Brazil. I also think, like any fruit, they have season where they will be harder to supply the demand. When they are out of season, people still want them but become harder to grow needing more labor and become more expensive but as far as I am aware, they are in season right now confused .

QLD floods in Feb may still be affecting supply and demand? Interest rate rises may be affecting the farmers financial situation? Farmers having to offer higher wages to get pickers (the fruit will rot if not picked)? Water in NT supply is fine but I'd think in QLD way, water is probably very expensive.

The NT industry had some issues in 2007 (with a fungus) but I imagine they have recovered by now? After cyclone Larry, I refused to pay $12 a kg and bought them from the local shop for $2.95 a kg. They were from the plantation 20 minutes from my home and they just weren't pretty enough or big enough for our local Coles/Woolies. Tasted the same though rofl.

I guess if you start importing, then the local farmers will suffer financially as do all other fruit growers which are currently competing with OS growers. The bananas I had in NZ were fine and tasted great but I wonder who picked them, a five year old?

I often wonder how the OS growers do keep their prices so low? Child labour, substandard practices and does the OSfarmer get his fair cut? We all remember Bassa (Vietnam Catfish) being labelled "Fresh Water Barrmundi" saga a few years back? No wonder it was cheap, the waters they were caught in were far less quality than what we would have expected from AU fish farms. We are wiser, thanks to the media and now know what we are really buying.

It is a pity that we don't export more bananas but obviously, we pay our pickers too well to keep the cost down for countries as close as NZ which, are currently in recession, to afford.

Interesting articles.

Fair Trade Org

I think we'd be all a little surprised to know exactly what the farmers get, here and OS, after the supermarket chains take their cut (says she who is related to a lot of SA fruit growers smile )

7.99 at my local IGA and 2 bucks less for the WA ones.

The greengrocer which normally has cheap bananas has them selling for

6 dollars a kilo for qld bananas and about 4.50 to 5 dollars for a 750g bag of W.A. bananas. Still too expensive for me.

I asked the lady at the greengrocer why so expensive? She said because it is Christmas coming up soon and also because we have just come out of winter and after January when more bananas are in production they will be cheaper.

I could have sworn bananas were 1.50-3 dollars a kilo this time last year.

We are spoilt rotten by cold storage fruits that may be anywhere up to 12 months old before we sink our teeth into them. Used to be we had a definite season for fruit, it tasted like it should, had the odd blemish and didn't keep all that well but you appreciated it more. Most of the apples that we get served up is at least 8 months old, imported and looks nice and shiny bright but with no flavour and is genearlly unappealing. Meanwhile our own fruit growers go broke trying to keep prices down to the insipid rubbish that the major retailers import.

As to importing bananas thats a lynching offence to a banana grower around here. There is no way the government is going to allow the potential for massive crop damage from imported diseases from anywhere so they have very stringent controls and quaranteen policies. One banana growing region got flattened by a cyclone but there was still plenty of stock comming out of southern Qld and NSW and not to mention WA. It was just a money grab by teh supermarkets flogging them a $10.00 a kg.

As for importing kiwi apples no thanks. We don't need apple blight here your welcome to keep it thanks all the same.

You gave us your bogans and we gave you our possums, want to do a trade back?

We had imported kiwi fruits from NZ selling here a while back 33 cents each.

My uncle from nz tells me that Australian produce eg oranges from somewhere in Australia and tomatoes from Queensland are selling in some NZ supermarkets cheaper than the nz produce.

This may shed some light on the issue. The main banana growing regions have just come through there driest 5 month period on record. Also winter time generally sees a slowing in the amount of fruit being produced due to the colder conditions, less rainfall and less sunshine hours. The demand cannot stay high all the time, thus when you throw the driest period in recorded history into the mix you will get price increases to compensate.

Ok, but does that explain why the W.A. Canarvon bananas are so dear ? 5 dollars a kilo ? Yes it has been very dry up in Qld after that deluge earlier in the year.. but can the same be said for Canarvon and the other parts of W.A. where the bananas also come from ?

They could be using your local Banana's Vinny to fill the shortfall of the Qld banana's down south. Demand drives the dollar price higher.
