CF, Laverton copped 5 mm, here in Caroline Springs, probably about 1 mm, Tarneit where I work probably similar to laverton, but I am not sure, the hail and rain that fell was nice and intense though

cool and dry weather today, mostly calm but a bit of a breeze now and then.

the sky was mostly cloudy but when the sun did shine, as you would expect this time of the year, it had a kick!

Pretty boring week coming up it seems just a brief shower or two on most days and temps on the cool side except for Thursday. Another month of below average rain here.

I'm coming to Melbourne for a conference from the 4th to the 8th - had my wardrobe chosen, and just saw the forecast eek I've heard all the jokes about Melbourne weather, but wasn't expecting a Brisbane winter while I was there!

So Melbournites, what are your thoughts on the forecast - do I drag out the winter wardrobe? Are there any local idiosyncracies I should know about (wind chill etc)? Should I load up a two season wardrobe just in case?

December is usually warm and pleasant temps but it is still a bit up and down. Southerly winds can still be very cool and seabreezes around Melbourne often reinforce this. You will need to take some warmer clothes just in case. It could just as easily be hot though, 7 day forecasts down here are pretty hopeless most of the time as I'm sure they are for most of Aus. Could just as easily be 30s the entire time.

In the city the urban heat island effect usually keeps minimums fairly mild for most of the night.

As for today's weather. 7.9C here at the moment, it was a cloudy day today but it cleared towards sunset so we could be in for a cold night and heavy dew I reckon. RH% is still high.

Thanks for the advice guys - I thought there might be some local 'inside' advice! Lucky I didn't pack away my trusty black trench coat! I think I'll dress for summer, but have the coat to throw over the top just in case. Last time I as in Melbourne (for the flower show) it was cooler in Brisbane. I'm all for some cooler weather, but I don't know how you guys live with these changes - at least in Brisbane in December there are only two choices - hot, and bloody hot! I think I'll wait until Wednesday and see how the forecast is then. A storm would be nice - see how Melbourne storms stack up against Brisbane ones . . . laugh

Wello....just look at today....even though officially max was 19.6 (and my max was 19.3) when the sun was out, it actually felt warmer than that. The sun here really has the kick in it this time of year. You would be able to get away with wearing light clothing, but don't forget a jumper of light jacket if you plan on being out at night.

Don't be fooled if the forecast is for showers, they won't happen! It will only be cold if a deep low pressure forms just to our east, like what happened last weekend.

Mind you coming from the humidity of Brisbane you will notice a difference the first day you are here. Just don't think it's scarf and winter woolies weather. And it probably won't be intense heat either, although next Thursday, the 4th(is that the day you arr could be arrive?) could be a warm windy day.

Hi Wellometro, A longwave trough is due around the 5th or 6th of December so I expect the 5th and 6th to be quite cool with temps around the high teens or around 20c should warm up slightly after that back to the mid to high 20's by the 8th. Hope that helps.

Thank you all - you've been very helpful, and just as I suspected, the temps don't seem to translate quite into what they would in Brisbane (in winter!). Bit of a packing challenge with a small suitcase, but you've all given me some good tips - what would we do without WZ and weatherzoners! After today (max 31 with a DP of 20 and currently sitting on 90% RH), I'm definitely looking forward to the cooler weather!

a nice late spring day here, if you like sunny skies and warm temps. Afternoon clouds here could be the precurser to a change, but it is quite a pleasant evening at the moment, not much wind here either!

3 weeks left of work and I can't wait!!!

well for the first day of summer, the weather wasn't summer like. Showers last night and today was cool and cloudy. Some sun during the day made it feel pleasant but by this afternoon was quite breezy at work down at Hoppers Crossing/Tarneit.

Well another cool summers day. Some sun and clouds to mix up the day and a little bit of drizzle fell at lunch time. With no 30 in the forecast I wonder if we will end up having a dry cool december. Will make a difference to dry and hot months!

Thats good, keep the comparisons going. I enjoy reading them!

I think mate the heat may start returning mid-late December onwards. Just what I think though!

If the heat doesn't come back at all would be a nice blessing! Denis Luke is going for a mild Summer & not to many stinkers which is complete opposite to what BOM are saying at the moment I'm more inclined in going with Denis especially going by the weather patterns of late so I don't think we will see a heatwave this month perhaps 2-4 days above 30c later this month.
