Obviously my memory is quite bad, because the only 'bad' weather i recall during the xmas/ new year period was 1998 where not alot of cricket was played, the storms effected the sydney to hobart tragically and even new years eve was a cold one!

27th December 1999, highest daily rainfall on record for December.

Lancefield 97.4mm
Melbourne Airport 77.4mm
Kyneton 84.6mm

Pretty sure these records would still stand.

This is the event I remember. These falls were from torrential downpours in thunderstorms if I remember correctly, we had boulders tumbling down our street dislodged from the extreme rainfall and the local creek was flowing about a foot over the road. eek

EDIT: Just remembered I was at one of the days of the Boxing day test that year, maybe day 3 and there was morning drizzle that delayed the start of the days play, must have been the day after the severe storms.

what? 98 was awesome, so was 93.. both had the cut offs which dumped good totals across most of the state. Id rank them as 99 being the best followed by 93 then 98 at least for the past couple of decades smile

I can still remember Boxing Day 1993 and I was only 11 years old. Was down in the SE suburbs of Melb at my grandparents place for Christmas and Boxing Day and it was heavy rain and gales pretty much all day and freezing, 14C max I think. absolutely shocking weather for mid Summer. If it happened now though I would think it was great.

93 for me then 99 then 98 interms of rainfall Melbourne had close to 100mm out of the 93 cut off low and East of Melb and the catchments had double that around 200mm. In 99 the city and around here only had 60mm but some parts did better in heavier storms especially to my NW

I think this too. If you look at elders 28-day rainfall it shows a suggested period of fine weather lasting a fair amount of time, and thats getting into the 2nd half of January. They have been suggesting that for a while, plus what I have heard from you Johny and some long-range forecasters I would have to agree. The worst heat of this summer will be 2nd half of Jan and start of Feb at least, then back to mildish weather with the odd 30-35 degree day. wink

another mixed day today. More sun than yesterday but it did get quite cloudy at times. Like yesterday was quite warm early but then a wind change cooled the air. This time a shower did manage to reach here, with heavy drops, but I doubt it would have registered anything.

I think there is a certain irony that the addition of New Year's Eve and New Year's Day is about 40. We had a 40ish on both days 31/12/07 & 1/1/08.

Always the case, when the tennis is on there is always some heat! And someone will complain that the open should be changed to either December or March!

Well today was another warm and mostly sunny day. Although the seabreezes were not as strong as yesterday, so therefore wasn't as cool this arvo as it was yesterday arvo. Also while there was some cloud about, it was a mainly sunny day. At the moment here there is a slight seabreeze, more cloud than blue sky and dry. Overall a good summer's day.

Caroline Springs: Min: 12.3 Max: 29.5

I wish! lol

Just to add to what I wrote earlier, it ended up being quite a windy day today. There was some showers overnight and probably in the area today but nothing out here. The sun is out now and if you could find somewhere away from the wind it may have been a warm day!

Caroline Springs: Min: 14.2 Max: 24.3
Melbourne: Min: 14.5 Max: 24.2

Happy New Year everyone!

It's absolutely pouring in Flinders at the moment, from the long line of showers just crossing here.

Looks like it's another day we won't be going to the beach wink

Now is the summer of our discontent.

This time last year, the minimum was around 20. It was 35ish near 1030am.

It is the summer of the eternal southerlies.
