An interesting question in regards to climate of the two cities well-known for its inter-city rivalry: Sydney & Melbourne.

What are the pros & cons of the climate in both Sydney & Melbourne, based on personal experience?

Here are the facts as we know it:

* The average maximum temperatures during January & February are pretty much the same in both cities. However, the average minimum temps in both months are significantly lower in Melbourne than it is in Sydney, which makes summer nights more bearable than in Sydney, at least on average.

* The average Relative Humidity (RH) & Dew Point (DP) temps are significantly lower in Melbourne than it is in Sydney, especially during the summer months.

* On average, Melbourne has more days per year of above 30°C, 35°C & 40°C on average than Sydney CBD & coastal suburbs. When compared with Western Sydney, Melbourne has less 30°C+ & 35°C+ days on average. Because of its lower RH & DP, Melbourne at least has slightly more bearable warm to hot days (at least anywhere below 35°C) than what Sydney has.

* The average annual rainfall in Melbourne is significantly lower than in Sydney, hence its lower RH & DP.

Since I'm not a beach-goer myself, as well as loathing the high humidity that Sydney has during the summer months, I think that Melbourne would suit my climate tastes better than in Sydney, especially when considering the fact that the job opportunities in Melbourne is pretty much comparable to that of Sydney.

I'd be interested to read other people's comments about this.

That's quite true too, especially over the last 5-10 years.

ROFLMAO - Sydney high humdity.

Sydney certainly does have high humidity in summer. DP often well into the 20s.

Funnily enough, Melbourne has barely had a dry day (i.e. low DP) since the start of spring. Last summer was incredible in terms of how humid it was, was rivaling Sydney and even Brisbane at times which explains all the massive supercell storms VIC got.

Also, last year you could say that Melbourne missed out on a winter. many days in the high teens and averaging around 15C-16C a lot of the time. It is possible that the climate could be changing in VIC to a more sub tropical one, hot and humid stormy summers, milder winters, etc.

I suppose it is all relative to what you are used to.

As to humdity being high come and live in the tropics for a couple of years and live with a daily dose of humdity between 55% and 90% and a temprature range from 25C to 35C every day for 4 months.

What you guys experience is a couple of sticky days.
