The data should be available between 0330 and 0430 UTC...at least to registered users, but assume that time would be the same to the free radar also.

Thats good. Something that sits in my craw, I am a registered storm spotter, who lives within 40 minutes of the site and no...."we are opening up the new radar station, we would like you to attend an witness the important event. We appreciate your time given as a storm spotter ..... etc" Grrrrr. I know there will be some seminars locally about the new radar, again, no notice to about this personally sent to such people.

I got an email from Cheryl Burns, BOM, the other day, about the new weather services that are up and running now. The email started out.....

'As a valued member of the Bureau of Meteorology team, we would like to inform you about the September upgrade to the forecast and warning system in NSW.' Yep, a valued member...

Jeff

Well that is more than I ever get as a BoM Spotter - zip, zilch, not a word for must be 18 months now. Guess with new technology they just don't need spotters any more.

They've had announcements about the commissioning of the radar today on the local radio.

Yes the Tamworth (Namoi) radar. It will be interesting to see how quickly the various commercial weather sites and users, update their sites to show the new radar.

There's any interesting point, appears the new radar, like other regional dopler radars, is only on 10 minute updates, not 6 minute updates as in the captails. Where's the 3 amigos? Mr Windsor, us poor country folk are being disadvantaged!!!!...lol

Personally, I was never expecting 6-minute updates for the Namoi radar. Only 3 of the dopplers update every 6 minutes. Adelaide gets 10-minute updates and I'm very sure Darwin only gets 10-minute updates as well (it's currently unavailable so I can't check for sure). There's probably a good reason for the difference though. It would probably be a good question to ask Julie and Michael at the seminar when they come to you in Tamworth on October 7th.

Thanks for the link. Boy they are not very smart. No such link exists on the radar news section, where they have been updating people about what is happening with the construction "...hmm whats happening with the radar, go to the link I have been following...." No lets put it somewhere totaly different.

I think the reason is bandwidth/data costs re: 6 min vs 10 min updates as they are more remote...but don't quote me on it!

Also, the slower the updates, the more time the radar has to get higher accuracy.
