WZ article called the waterspout at Lennox Head a tornado. It wasn't even a supercellular storm for goodness sake!

I thought I saw on the TV news Julie Evans at the BOM saying that it was a supercell (wasn't the media quoting her; she said it herself in front of the camera).

Not that it matters now, of course.

Yeah BoM have openly called it a supercell and some pics show what I think is an actual waterspout and an actual tornado beside each other. Correct me if I am wrong.

These weather presenters are now describing "VERY COLD winds coming in from the SE" yeah like this really is record-breaking whereas in fact this is just another ordinary front passing through. Does happen from time to time y'know. Snow down to 1000m in Alpine areas. Nothing unusual.

The BOM forecast says there will also be snow in the Brindabellas but almost every time this happens, there is hardly a patch to be seen among the blue mountains in the distance.

Still a struggle to get back to average temperatures for June, currently +1.7 here after another near average day today 0.8 to 9.9. Would be nice to see the average by the weekend, nearly possible I think. Would be even nicer to finaly see below average again like in 2008.

Yes, most forested Australian mountains often do not look snow covered. Part of the problem is that Eucalyptus are not deciduous so unless you look above the tree line like the main range you do not see much snow. But there still can be a fair bit up there in the forest, just not visible from far.

So there actually was a tornado?

I find that extremely hard to believe, but if there's evidence to back it up - fiar enough!

sorry cw but if you look in the right spots you always see the snow for example last year the snow that could be seen in the tidbinbilla area of the brindies could be seen quite well and it was only a couple of cm's thick.
but i have to agree with you in the fact that theres nothing spectacular in this one

Averages will always fluctuate much more earlier in the month and will be far more sensitive to extremes in day to day temps. For instance after the first couple of days of June our averages were well over the monthly mean (3-4C). We're now sitting on 0C for our min average and 1.7C for our max avg and I dare say it'll be down near 0 by the weekend.

You'll go crazy studying averages on a day by day basis, particularly early in the period!!!

Bigwilly, I realize what you say, I am just getting frustrated that every month now since 2008 has been above average mean temps. If at least we got half way through the month on average we could maybe have a shot at the first below average month in a long time. I guess I just keep hoping against hope that one day the climate will return to normal.

There's some dampness outside, although this front thing doesn't get here til midday tomorrow according to Mark Carmody. It's 3.3c outside and there's a lot of dripping on the roof. No easterly wind, so it's not coastal dampness. Some nasty warnings for wind and sheep threats, and the snow line looks to come quite low. Wow.

Yes, look out for those flying sheep. I had a look outside and quite oddly here there is no frost on the verandah (just wet), yet the whole yard is glistening white with thick frost, screen around +1, grass -2 and above the roof +3.

Yes, Ron, its those near surface conditions ahead of a front which were quite interesting last night. For some reason still not fully understood by me, the surface seems to get very cold ahead of a cold front. Last evening the grass was probably the whitest I have seen it this year under an evening spotlight, yet the cold could not get more than a metre deep because of the mixing air above. Your place is better issolated from the mixing air so your inversion held well.

A moderate to heavy frost here this morning at sunrise. There's still quite the frost in shaded areas but it is quickly melting in places where the sun is shining. The temperature inversion well and truly in force this morning between the city and the airport. I'm guessing the air temp must have dropped down to between -2.5 and -3 overnight for a nice frost like that (the house is about the temp this morning that I'd expect after a night that cool).

Have a look at the SE QLD/NE NSW thread for 4 - 7 June. No doubt at all there was a supercellular tornado at 7.30am 3 June, plus some separate waterspouts.

No frost this morning at the top of the range but there was a very thick fog at 6am.A balmy +2C overnight but it felt colder than that last night when I was covering some tender veges in anticipation of a frost.
