Does enyone have experience in manufacturing charcoal ?
I just did an amazing course called "Technology of Growing Grass" run by Grazing Bestprac . It went on to explain the benefits of growing grass and grazing it rotationally , with the grass sequestering carbon in the process . To hasten the carbon impact in pastures I put forward the idea of adding charcoal or Biochar , incorporating it in liquid form when "pasture cropping"
Any thoughts ?

thanks for that , I`ve been chatting to her already . Their methods have changed I believe to a more user friendly high tech pyrolizing machine .
I`ve also been chatting to a builder of this type of machine but they are out of the range of my budget .
Always needing to hear about more ideas

The mail I`ve seen is that "yes" charcoal IS alkaline 8-8.7 . With the addition of 'wood vinegar' ( an extract from the gasses released ) when added back to the charcoal to quench/cool it , has the benefits of adjusting the ph back towards tolerable.
I do understand you have to be careful with the materials used when making charcoal and is why I intend to make what charcoal I can on-farm by utilizing regrowth (seasoned/cut for a year or so). Jumping in and buying the mega-bucks machinery will have to wait . I have a source of charcoal/biochar but transport would be a killer .

Charcoal would be alkaline. Ash certainly is, you can use it as the lye in making soap. I throw my ash and charcoal from the heater out on where I'm establishign lawn, as the shaley ground here is very acid. Most arid soils tend to be acid.

What works in charcoals favour is that it has the ability to store nutrients in a way more available to the plants , rather than let it be locked up in the sub-soil .
