For the week of Mar. 9-15: Mena's Avg. Max.: 60.8F/16.0C: Avg. Min.: 37.5F/3.0C.

This last full week of Winter featured some pleasant "Springlike" temperatures and a good & welcome raindump at weeks' end. A dry (& windy) Pacific cold front passed through on the 12th; the good raindump (lasted into the 16th) was courtesy of another Pacific cold front (passage early AM on 16th), the cold front--in departing--deposited a few inches of Snow in N/NW Arkansas (here, late PM on 16th, we had drizzle and a temperature near 35F/1.6C). Rain was forecasted to be with Thundershowers, but no thunder heard here.
I'm starting to see more wildflowers in yards, more buds are showing on area trees and small patches of green grass are starting to be seen. The later Sunset times are good to see as well.
Overall High-12:01AM & Overall Low-11:39PM-listed for the 12th.
Forecast for upcoming week calls for variable (but warming) temperatures with more rainchances later in the week.

For the week of Mar. 16-22: Mena's Avg. Max.: 63.0F/17.2C; Avg. Min.: 39.4F/4.1C.

This week featured more variable temperatures. Spring here in the NH officially began on the 20th. Good raindumps were courtesy of passage of a couple Pacific cold fronts (early AM on 16th & very early AM on 22nd); a (dry in my area) Pacific cold front passed through on the 18th. Chilly mornings, aided by lower humidity levels, gave way to very pleasant afternoon conditions. The thunder was good to hear as well. More flowers are in bloom, trees are really budding now and even more green grass is starting to show in area lawns (looks like I'll be mowing before too much longer). Actually had rain twice on the 22nd: Thundershower came through very early AM and we caught the edge of another Thundershower cell around 3PM (as Thundershower cells at that time--several rows of them--were moving from West to East).
Overall High-12:01AM and Overall Low-11:03PM-listed for the 16th; Overall High-12:01AM and Overall Low-11:54PM-listed for the 22nd.
Forecast for upcoming week calls for mostly dry conditions with a bit cooler temperatures.

Humidity & instability levels have really picked up here over the past week mostly courtesy of large scale trough that has been affecting much of eastern Australia. The resultant moisture infeed from this provided us with a pretty useful rain event during Thursday and Friday especially in the east and western parts of the state but there were some useful falls across parts of Melbourne too.Temperatures have mostly been above average for this time of year with minimums here in the 13-16C range and maximums mostly in the mid to high 20'sC.Conditions are still unstable enough to provide for isolated showers and thunderstorms especially in northern and eastern parts. But we did have a few heavy early am showers today and there are currently a few storms building on the ranges not far to the north of me.But it looks like the seabreeze convergence boundary is pretty close to my area now.So hopefully these storms may track closer to my area this evening if they are still going as the seabreeze weakens & contracts back to the coast.

For the week of Mar. 23-29, Mena's Avg. Max.: 65.0F/18.3C; Avg. Min.: 40.8F/4.8C.

This past week had a cooler start and warmer finish. A--dry in my area--Pacific cold front passed on the 24th; Small rainamounts were due to a moist (pre-frontal) Southerly airflow--felt fairly humid on those days. The Pacific cold front passed through on the 28th: Possible severe weather was forecasted for my area, but--Thankfully--most of the heavier thundershower activity passed to the North & South of me (my area again was in sort of a "dry slot").
Springtime conditions (leaves, green grass, flowers, etc.) are becoming more evident as the days go by in my area.
Overall Low-11:37PM-listed on the 28th.
Forecast for upcoming week calls for warmer tops (70'sF+/21C+) with mornings near 50F/~10C, with thundershower chances around midweek--as the weather-pattern becomes more active.

P.S.: Many thanks for that information, Supercell9. Have a good one, Good Buddy.

Just out of interest I've been comparing rainfall totals between Mena and my local weather station for a while now and March 2014 is the first month we've received more rain then Mena since February last year! Kingaroy recorded 122.8mm (4.83"), when usually Mena smashes us in the rainfall stakes! Take August last year, we recorded 4.0mm (0.15") for the whole month compared to your 4.45"!
I'm pretty sure the only time we beat Mena by a significant margin was January last year (we only just beat you in February 2013!) with 345.8mm (13.61") compared to Mena's 7.12" in the same month. Mind you, that was our second wettest January on record. wink

What is Mena's average annual rainfall?

Cheers! smile Gus

^^^Addendum to above report^^^

KENA Mar. Rain: 4.32"/109.7mm (-0.98"/-24.8mm; 81% normal)
KENA Rain for Year: 9.41"/239.0mm (-2.19"/-55.6mm; 81% normal)
*******

Greetings GusO: Hope all's well in your lovely corner of Aus-land. Yes, Mena might really beat your area in the rainfall tallies, but at least your town gets WAY more rain than the desert areas do.

To answer your question: Mena averages 54.50"/1,384.3mm rainfall per year. The wettest average month is May, with 6.40"/162.5mm; January & August are equally our driest average months with 2.70"/68.5mm.

As per my (well-used) 1995 USAToday Weather Almanac:
The average wettest town in Arkansas is the town of Glenwood (NE corner of Pike County; around 40miles/64kms--straight line--SE of Mena) as they average 55.44"/1,408.1mm rainfall yearly.
The Arkansas town with the Most Yearly Rainfall is the town of Newhope (also in Pike County) which recorded 98.55"/2,503.1mm rainfall in 1957 (I think this record has been broken, as the Grant County town of Leola recorded 100.20"/2,545.0mm rainfall in-I think-around 2004).
The Arkansas town with the Least Yearly Rainfall is the community of Index (Miller County) which recorded only 19.11"/485.3mm rain for the drought-plagued year of 1936.

For the week of Mar. 30-Apr.5: Menas' Avg. Max.: 67.1F/19.5C; Avg. Min.: 42.5F/5.8C.

This past week featured more variable early-Spring temperatures and a couple nice raindumps. Showers on the 31st were due to a moist Southerly windflow; a fairly powerful Pacific cold front passed by (at 11:55PM, gusty W winds and falling temperatures) on the 4th. Possibly severe weather (Thunderstorms could contain Tornadoes, Large Hail, High Winds) was forecasted for my area late PM on the 3rd, but--Most Thankfully--any severe weather missed my area (my area--for much of the time--was sort of in a "dry slot", which showed up quite well on the Ft. Smith, AR Doppler Radar loops). Felt fairly humid during the early-week; felt much cooler (damp & chilly, cool Easterly breezes) on the 4th (compared to the previous much warmer days).
The first 100F+/37.7C+ temperature of 2014 in the US was recorded on April 2nd (Day 92) as Laredo, Texas had the Highest US Maximum that day at 100F/37.7C (also on that day, Gage, Oklahoma had a maximum of 91F/32.7C after a chilly morning minimum of 36F/2.2C--a very nice daily temperature spread).
Overall Low-11:35PM-listed for the 31st; Overall Low-11:59PM-listed for the 3rd; Overall High-12:01AM-listed for the 4th.
Forecast for upcoming week calls for warmer temperatures as the week progresses, with more Thundershower chances by the weekend.

Hello Friends:

Just saw a very interesting US Weather Map--1994-2013 Yearly Average Minutes in Tornado Warning in each US county. During that time, Polk County, Arkansas averaged 90-120 minutes per year under a Tornado Warning.

A friend on Facebook sent me this map (map is from the Weather Nation page on Facebook), but I'm unable to find the link to this map.

For the week of Apr. 6-12: Mena's Avg. Max.: 69.1F/20.6C; Avg. Min.: 44.4F/6.8C.

This past week featured a chilly start followed by very pleasant and warm conditions. Rain on 6th & 7th was due to a Stationary front to our South (my area was on the chilly and rainy side [North side] of the front), the 6th felt very cool, especially with raw Easterly breezes. A Pacific cold front gave the rain on the 8th (this front caused the [small, numerous and spotty] thundershower cells to move in a NW to SE direction, along the windflow), around 1:55PM that day, a thundershower cell also briefly dropped some "soft" almost marble-sized hail (we don't get hail here that often, much less the "soft" variety). Solid cloudcover and very humid-feeling (pre-frontal) on 11th & 12th. Saw my first snake of the year (a harmless garter snake--common to my area) on the 12th, as it scurried under my back porch.
Forecast for upcoming week calls for another chilly start, followed by close-to-normal maximums. A Pacific cold front passed through late on the 13th and my area may cop near-record Low Minimums on the morning of the 15th (my area is under a Freeze Warning for that morning), it seems we usually get a good cold-snap here close to Eastertime.

Hi Wet Snow! I think the correct meteorological term for 'soft' hail is graupel! A very common occurence where I live in Melbourne with its strong maritime effect on the climate, especially on the behaviour of winter storms. Sounds like you had what we would call a 'cold outbreak' smile

Cheers mate!

Hello Aussiestormfreak & All:

G'Day Good Buddy!

Actually (as per the NWS) another definition of "soft hail" is Snow Pellets and Hominy Snow (graupel actually refers to precipitation that forms when supercooled droplets of water are collected and freeze on a falling snowflake, forming a 2-5mm ball of rime).

Yes--knowing of "coldie" thundershower events in Australia--I thought that the thundershower event here must be similar to that.

For the week of Apr. 20-26, Mena's Avg. Max.: 72.5F/22.5C; Avg. Min.: 48.7F/9.2C.

This week featured some crisp mornings, very pleasant afternoons and a couple nice raindumps. Passage of a Pacific cold front happened on the 21st. Had rain twice in one day here on the 24th: I copped 0.60"/15.2mm rain in AM shower (warm front) and then I recorded another 0.90"/22.8mm in another thundershower (from the trailing Pacific cold front) which started around 4PM; around 4:50PM, I noticed a brief fall of marble-sized hail (around 20 minutes later, the skies were mostly sunny!). Most Thankfully, any severe weather missed my area. Very cool temperatures for the morning afterward.
Overall Low-11:17PM-listed for the 21st; Overall Low-11:40PM-listed for the 24th.
It's currently 4:37PM Sunday here (cloudy and around 72F/22.2C), had very light rain around 12NOON--my area could cop some very nasty weather before too much longer. I'm hoping the cloudcover and cooler conditions will greatly lessen the severity of the weather in my area. Some discreet cells are in SE Kansas, E Oklahoma & W Arkansas--Thankfully there's no severe activity in my area yet (as per Ft. Smith, AR Doppler Radar), there is a Tornado warned cell in SE Oklahoma (moving to the NE) but this looks to miss my area to the NW. My area-and much of Arkansas-is in a Tornado Watch until 11PM. IMO, the nastiest weather will likely occur in parts of Arkansas to the East of me (as this event looks to be the most significant Severe Weather outbreak in Arkansas thus far in 2014).
Forecast for upcoming week calls for more shower chances with another good cool-down by mid-week.

Hello Folks:
Here's previous weeks' weather in Mena, Arkansas:

For the week of Apr. 27-May 3: Mena's Avg. Max.: 74.0F/23.3C; Avg. Min.: 51.0F/10.5C.

*=New Rec. Low Minimum for Date (breaking 35F/1.6C, set in 1996). This also Tied the All-Time Rec. Low May Minimum for Mena, set May 3, 2013.
#=New Rec. Low Minimum for Date (breaking 36F/2.2C, set in 2005).

This week featured more up-and-down temperature profiles and--as was the case last year--some record-breaking minimum temperatures for May.
Rain was ahead of a fairly powerful Pacific cold front (passage very early AM on 28th); Very Thankfully, the severe/tornadic weather missed my area--as the thundershower areas came in bands (traveling from S to N or SW to NE) and my area missed it all until a thundershower band hit us very late PM on 27th. The colder air lagged somewhat behind the front, but very unseasonably chilly mornings did finally arrive. The lower humidity levels/mostly sunny skies did cause some very nice daily temperature rises.
Overall Low-11:52PM-listed for the 27th (as the Morning Minimum was a balmy 69F/20.5C); Overall Low-11:56PM-listed for the 28th.
Forecast for upcoming week calls for more warmer-than-average afternoons (tops of 80F+/26.6C+) with more Thundershower chances later in the week.

Hello Folks:
Here's previous weeks' weather in Mena, Arkansas:

DATE.......HIGH........LOW.........RAIN
May...4..87F/30.5C..54F/12.2C..---
........5..83F/28.3C..59F/15C....---
........6..80F/26.6C..58F/14.4C..---
........7..82F/27.7C..60F/15.5C..---
........8..72F/22.2C..60F/15.5C..5.10"/129.5mm
........9..76F/24.4C..59F/15C....0.20"/5mm
......10..81F/27.2C..65F/18.3C..---

For the week of May 4-10: Mena's Avg. Max.: 75.4F/24.1C; Avg. Min.: 53.5F/11.9C.

This past week featured very warm temperatures with a very hefty raindump. Large raintotal was due to slow-moving thundershowers which were repeatedly tracking over the same area (Mena Airport copped 7.30"/185.4mm and radio station KENA recorded 6.35"/161.2mm rain from this event). Rain was actually a fair ways ahead of a Pacific cold front; this front actually passed through on the evening of the 9th (0.10"/2.5mm rain carried into early AM hours of the 9th and a further 0.10"/2.5mm rain with the thundershower cell [frontal passage] that evening, so another day where we had rain twice in a day here). We really don't have such heavy (daily) rain events here that often. Thankfully, such heavy rain drains away from my area rather quickly and any flooding (near creeks/rivers/low places) is usually short-lived and causes minor damage. That 5.10" daily raintotal represents 79% of our average rainfall for the whole month of May.
Overall Low-11:43PM-listed for the 8th (as the morning minimum was a warm and humid 69F/20.5C).
Forecast for upcoming week calls for another potentially prolonged and heavy rainevent (my area of Arkansas will be in a Flash Flood Watch from the 12th-14th), this Pacific cold front will cause another fair temperature drop for a few days after passage.
Today (Sunday) is the Mothers' Day holiday here in the US, and I'd like to wish a Very Blessed & Happy Mothers' Day to ALL the Wonderful Moms out there.

Officially on May 8th, Mena recorded 6.35"/161.2mm rain--which broke the old rec. rain for the Date of 2.62"/66.5mm, set in 1936.

The other 2 Polk County weather stations also broke their Daily Rec. Rainfall for May 8th:

1MI. SSE of Big Fork: 2.90"/73.6mm (broke 1.30"/33.0mm in 1946).
Cove: 3.88"/98.5mm (broke 1.09"/27.6mm in 2005).

Hi Wet Snow,

You often mention Canadian and Pacific cold fronts. Is there an easy explanation for how they differ. Does the Pacific front cross the Rockies as such, or does it develop as a lee cyclone due to an upper level Pacific system.

Thanks, although I do comment much, I do often look at your weather posts, mostly with envy due to the storms and snow.
