Incredible video isnt it Steve?
The same thing happened here in NZ a few months ago, a huge snow dump right down the bottom of the South Island cause Invecargill stadium to collapse, similar to the video of Minnesota. Again, lucky there was nobody in it at the time.

{ED} The structural damage was so much that they have bulldozed the whole thing & will have to rebuild it from scratch.

Hello Steve (& Dale):

Am unsure at this time the damage cost to the Metrodome or the repair time. It's incredible to me that it collapsed as the structure--as per the climate there--was built with heavy snowdumps in mind. There was supposed to be an NFL game there yesterday (Sunday) between the Minnesota Vikings and the New York Giants. Because of the blizzard, the plane carrying the Giants players had to land in Kansas City, Missouri. The Vikings vs. Giants game will be played tonight (Monday) in the indoor stadium in Detroit, Michigan.

I'm unaware of any recent NFL games postponed because it was too dangerous to play, the Dec. 31, 1967 "Ice Bowl" game in Green Bay, Wisconsin is testament to that. The Green Bay Packers played the Dallas Cowboys in a playoff game, the air temperature at game-time being -13F, with wind chill of -36F. (the field was frozen; you may care to see the wikipedia article on "The Ice Bowl"). NFL games have been postponed (switching dates or venues) because of the aftermath of Hurricanes, wildfires in area, 9/11, MLB playoff games in the stadium on the same date the NFL home team was to play there. Because of the flooding from Hurricane Katrina/damage to the Superdome, the New Orleans Saints played their (8) home games elsewhere for the 2005 season. Quite often, NFL games are played in driving rainstorms or heavy snow (like yesterday's game in Chicago, between New England and Chicago). NFL games have been delayed (for some minutes) if lightning is in the area.

Thanks for You Kind Christmas/New Years wishes. I wish you the same.

Hello Folks:

Well, today (Fri.) I've noticed a (same-time) temperature difference in Alaska in excess of 100F (one of many such spreads to come). At 1:56PM AKST, the town of Ft. Yukon, AK was sitting at -56F/-48.8C while (at 12:56PM HST) the airport at Atka, AK was at 45F/7.2C--a spread of 101F/56C!

Wet Snow,

To answer that PM you sent me - I can't really find the greatest same-time temperature difference for Canada due to some weather records missing or just not available. But I can tell you that the greatest range in a single day across Canada was on February 27, 1992, when the town of Claresholm in SW Alberta was recording a high of 24C (75.2F), while on that same day, Eureka in what is now Nunavut (split from the NWT as a new territory in April, 1999) recorded what was probably the lowest temp anywhere in Canada at -46.7C (-52.1F). This works out to a temperature range of 70.7C (127.3F)!

The high in Claresholm was probably the highest temperature ever recorded in Canada for the month of February and was the result of a very powerful chinook. Claresholm is a farming town of 3,700 about 104 km SE of Calgary, which recorded a high of 22.6C (72.7F) that day - the highest February temperature of any major Canadian city. Edmonton on that day recorded a high of 13.3C at both airports (International and City Centre). Only two days later, Edmonton recorded its highest February temperature at 14C (57.2F) at City Centre Airport.

Eureka, Nunavut is really a tiny collection of weather, communications and research stations operated by the Government of Canada and the Canadian military. It's located on the west side of Ellesmere Island, the northernmost island in the Canadian Arctic at a latitude of 79.98N. It's not a true village or town. Rather, it's like some of those research stations you see in Antarctica. There is no permanent population there, either - just a handful of staff who come and go on a rotational basis. Eureka is the 2nd northernmost settlement in the word after Alert, Nunavut (Lat. 82.5N), on the northern end of Ellesmere Island.

BTW, that roof collapse of the Metrodome arena reminds me of what happened in BC Place in Vancouver in January, 2007, when it had a large tear and deflation. But this was caused by a windstorm rather than heavy snow. Because the CFL season was long over, there was no disruption to the BC Lions CFL football team's season. I remember having walked near BC Place a few months later while the roof was still down and being repaired. It looked kind of weird not having that inflated roof on.

BC Place is larger than the Metrodome, but seats a few thousand less during football games, probably because of the fact that CFL playing fields are larger than those in the NFL. The inflatable roof is no longer up, as it's been taken down for the final time in May, 2010, and a new retractable roof is being built for that stadium.

Hello Folks:
Here's previous weeks' weather in Mena, Arkansas:

DATE.....HIGH.......LOW........RAIN
Dec..12..34F/1.1C...24F/-4.4C..---
.....13..37F/2.7C...19F/-7.2C..---
.....14..46F/7.7C...18F/-7.7C..---
.....15..64F/17.7C..28F/-2.2C..---
.....16..57F/13.8C..37F/2.7C...---
.....17..47F/8.3C...31F/-0.5C..0.20"/5mm
.....18..49F/9.4C...32F/0.0C...---

A very cool week (last full week of Autumn) at the start--with mid-week warmth--and another cool-down at the end. For the week of Dec. 12-18: Mena's Avg. Max.: 51.0F/10.5C; Avg. Min.: 29.8F/-1.2C. A Warm front--dry--came through late PM on the 15th; the trailing (dry in my area) Pacific cold front passed through in the AM hours of the 16th. An upper-level disturbance caused the light raintotal on the 17th (the precipitation ended before the temperature was freezing, so no snowflurries [slight chance forecasted] in my area late PM on the 17th). An exceedingly raw day on the 12th--really gusty and biting NW winds (clear skies) causing low Wind Chill values (at 6:59AM, KENA reported a temperature of 24F/-4.4C and a Wind Chill of 10F/-12.2C; NW winds at 20mph/32kph then). Thankfully, later in the day the winds abated. Don't get Wind Chills that low very often here. Fairly cold on the 13th, but without the wind. Otherwise, skies were mostly cloud-free with fairly low humidity levels. It now looks certain that Mena--according to the official station, KENA and also according to my rainguage--will end 2010 with below normal rainfall (as we have had a fairly dry finish to the year and it looks possible for Mena to have less than 1"/less than 25mm rain for December--which is rare for here. In fact in my weather records--since 1984--there has only been 1 December with less than 1"/less than 25mm rain [0.65"/16.5mm in December 2005]).
Overall High-12:01AM and Overall Low-abt. 10:27PM-listed for the 16th.
Also looking very certain that Mena will have yet another "Non-White" Christmas this year--as the forecasted top that day here will be around 50F+/10C+. Temperatures will be warmer for much of the upcoming week with another cool-down later on and rather poor shower chances. Winter officially arrives in the NH on the 21st.

FYI: Due to the recent--heavy-snow caused--collapse of the roof at the Metrodome (Minneapolis, MN), for the first time in 29 years, the NFL's Minnesota Vikings will be playing an outdoor homegame. Tomorrow night (Monday Night Football), the Vikings will host the Chicago Bears at the University of Minnesota's stadium (on the UM campus in Minneapolis, MN). The conditions are sure to be fairly cold, with possibility of snow (IMO, Snow & football/gridiron games just go together).

Wishing ALL A Very Merry (& Most Blessed) Christmas!
Kind Wishes & Take Care~~~Wet Snow
P.S. Mike (& Steve): Many Thanks for the very detailed information.

Correction to above post: The outlook for Mena on Christmas Day is a top near 39F/near 4C with clear skies. Wonder how far I'd have to go (northwards) to get a "White Christmas"?

P.S. Could get quite a bit of snow during that NFL game (Vikings vs. Bears) tonight as the areas around Minneapolis, MN are in a Winter Storm Warning. Kickoff is less than 3 hours from now (it's just after 5PM Monday here) and I can't wait to see football/gridiron played in snow! Great stuff!

.....24......37F/2.7C...32F/0C.....0.60"/15.2mm
.....25......37F/2.7C...31F/-0.5C..---

For the week of Dec. 19-25: Mena's Avg. Max.: 49.5F/9.7C, Avg. Min.: 28.5F/-1.9C.
This week had some good early-week warmth, followed by a fairly steep cooldown. I went walking on the 21st and only really needed a light windbreaker over my T-shirt. A (dry) warm front (causing nighttime temperature rise) passed through late PM on the 20th; the trailing (dry) Pacific cold front passed through early PM on the 21st. Low-pressure to our south (vortex of a Pacific cold front) caused the very chilly rain on the 24th--thought I'd see some snowflurries for sure as at one point, we were having pretty steady rain and a temperature of 33F/0.5C, but no white-stuff fell. We did have some very light snowflurries (too light to show up on radar) on Christmas Day. Winter officially arrived in the NH on the 21st.
Some bitterly cold days on the 24th & 25th: The daytime maximum on the 24th was 36F/2.2C around the 7:22AM sunrise, the daytime maximum on the 25th was only 33F/0.5C also around the 7:22AM sunrise--as the temperatures stayed steady near freezing (cloudy skies) throughout the day; thankfully, the winds were not that strong. Overall High-around 11:29PM (rising temperatures due to warmfront) listed for the 20th; Overall Low-abt. 11:54PM-listed for the 21st; Overall Low-abt. 11:45PM-listed for the 22nd; Overall High-12:01AM and Overall Low-abt. 12:16PM-listed for the 24th; Overall High-12:01AM and Overall Low-abt. 10:29PM-listed for the 25th. Previously mentioned (dry) warmfront gave us overcast skies and prevented me from seeing the eclipse.
Parts of Arkansas have pretty fair rain deficits as 2010 comes to a close: Little Rock, AR is currently 15.30"/~390mm below normal on rain; Fort Smith, AR has a rain deficit of almost 10"/254mm and we here in Mena are below-normal on rain for the year by almost 3.5"/nearly 89mm (this would be the 1st below-normal rainyear here since 2005, also the driest year here since 2005; for 2010, Mena has only had 55% of the rainfall that we copped in the very wet year of 2009).

Saturday, Dec. 25, 2010: Merry Christmas: Conditions at 12:01AM at Mena's Intermountain Municipal Airport: Overcast, ceiling 900FT (mist); Temperature: 41F/5C, Dew Point: 37F/3C, Visibility: 4MI/6.4KM, Wind: calm, Barometer: 30.18"/1,022mB. (Temperatures at Mena Airport tend to be from 3-5 degreesF higher than at radio station KENA--Mena's official weather station).

Upcoming forecast calls for fairly rapidly recovering maximums (tops could be well above 60F/16C+ by Thursday) with only slight rainchances.

Wishing ALL A Marvelous Week & A Most Blessed New Year~~~Wet Snow

Well, we've put a fair-size dent in our yearly rain deficit today (now 2:37PM Wed.). I've copped just over 2.50"/63.5mm rain so far today--my wettest day of 2010--with more to come. We now need only about 1.50"/38.1mm rain to reach the yearly average (and a good chance to do so). Just heard a couple thunder rumbles--kinda surreal as the temperature is only near 45F/7.2C. I can only imagine if all this wetness had fallen as SNOW!

That would be enough to count as an official white Christmas here according to the met office.

We did have snow cover on Christmas Day, the most since 1981 although no snow fell. Birmingham airport had a high of 0C(32F) and a low of -12C(10F).

It's been quite dry here this month, we've had just 17.4mm (0.68"). It's also been very cold (coldest for 110 years)

Addendum to my post of Dec. 27th:

Saturday, December 25, 2010: Merry Christmas:
48 Contiguous US State High Max.: 77F/25C--Key West, FL (83F/28.3C--Hilo, HI; Kahului, HI & Kona, HI).
48 Contiguous US State Low Min.: -13F/-25C--Big Piney, WY & Pinedale, WY (-42F/-41.1C--Farewell Lake, AK).

UK Steve: The NWS definition of a "White Christmas" is that there must be at least 1"/2.5cm of Snow on the ground on Christmas Day (doesn't have to Snow on that day).

Folks:

Feels kinda surreal here (2:51PM Thursday). The warm front caused yesterday to have lots of rain with low cloudcover and SW winds, which caused the nighttime temperatures to be steady/slowly rising; cloudy with drizzle in the AM hours today (at 12:20PM KENA reported temperature of 58F/14.4C--after a morning minimum of 50F/10C). The clouds have partially cleared and it feels more humid ("Springlike") than ever: Just a few minutes ago, Mena Airport (KMEZ on the US METAR map) had a temperature (unofficial) of 68F/20C, Dew Point of 59F/15C, Humidity of 73%, Winds were SSE at 9mph/14.4kph gusting to 16mph/25.7kph, and a fairly low Barometer of 29.61"/1,002.7mB.

Sure hope the forecasted T-showers tonight/tomorrow aren't severe (a similar warm, humid & showery day is forecasted for Friday). The fairly powerful cold front should hit us by midday Saturday, again causing a fair drop in the temperatures. I suppose I'll enjoy the warm (& humid) conditions while we have them (as it may be a few months before I feel this kind of humidity again).

Happy New Years' Wishes to ALL~~~Wet Snow

Thankfully, the shower line (didn't hear any thunder) was thin in my area, so no severe weather here. The severe cells were in NW Arkansas, as a twister killed 3 folks in the small community of Cincinnati, AR (Washington County).
