I wonder how small an area is available to see what is happening or recently happened.
The smallest map detail I can get covers most of the State of NSW.
If it is possible to refine the picture how is this done?

Are you a silver member? Silver members can get a more detailed lightning tracker on the storm tracker for each region.

I seem to meet the criterion of Silver membership. I recently started subscribing.

The detail on storm tracker seems unchanged.
Am I a silver member having signed on for 3 months, or not?

You will have to email Weatherzone directly about this - forum questions do not always get answered by admin.

The lightning overlay is available for Silver members when you use the radars too.

Do you pay the monthly fee?? if so then yes, your a silver member... maybe log out of the main site then log back in...

if you don't pay a fee, then your just a regular subscriber and can't get detailed things like that among many other things...

And remember, the main site and the forum are 2 different memberships and log ins.

Thanks Michael B and Simmah. I am paying a monthly fee. The first month has been debited.
I logged out both places and logged back in.
Taking NSW the most detail I can see has coastal range from Batemans Bay to Nambucca.
I was hoping for a much more detailed view.

Try using the + button on the radar animator. This will allow you to zoom in further. For example, the Sydney sector will allow you to see a domain from approximately Albion Park to Nelson Bay.

Using the radar viewer:
http://www.weatherzone.com.au/radar/

There is a "+" and "-" icon (bottom right of radar image) to zoom between 256km and 128km scale radars. That's as close as you'll get. The lightning overlay on the 128km radars is pretty good - provided there is some decent lightning activity occurring.
