Hi WZ,

Can you please link or explain what the new CMC model is? who owns/runs it? when does it run, and approx when is it updated on WZ? what resolution/domain it has etc etc.

Thanks, Nitso

O a couple more Q's if I may

Could someone please advise re. accuracy of forecast charts using this model as opposed to or in comparison to the others in the ensemble i.e. EC, GFS, ACCESS, UKMET?? and final Q, what made WZ decide to add the CMC model as opposed to say for example the UKMET model.

Lots of questions I know, but I am intrigued as it gives us another toy to play with during the upcoming cyclone season smile

I think I heard somewhere that the models are considered in this order by the Bureau...

UKMET, EC, JMA (all pretty close)

Then GFS and the higher res ACCESS's (R, A etc)

And then ACCESS G.

I may have forgotten one or two, and may have an improved list tomorrow as well poke

I've heard the same thing from one of the US hurricane forums I visit during their season, although not too sure how well it performs for us in the southern hemisphere. This coming season will be a good test for it.

The links that Mega posted earlier (particularly http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/charts/index_e.html) have quite a lot of information, including verification data for the CMC model compared to other models.

As to why we have chosen this model over others, the main reason is accessibility of the raw data (GRIB files). CMC is also now an input into the Weatherzone Opticast data, along with GFS, EC, ACCESS and TWC-Mesocast.

In terms of how well it performs in the Australian domain, I guess we'll all just have to find out! However, our preliminary verification suggests that it is on a par, if not slightly better than GFS across the Australian domain.
