Well, I'm none to impressed that I was pretty much stuck at the damn whyalla airport while the most photogenic storm day EVER in whyalla happened around me........

in the page below, you can see the following
-wierd low cloud / roll cloud formations that were around in the late afternoon. One minute they'd be going south next north, then next theyd be stationary and rolling over with diffrfent winds at different levels it seemed.

There was another pulsey lightning that I managed to catch by reflex.

There's some of the awesome gust front that came in to whyalla, including a sequence of a few that I shot while me and my bro were racing it to hummock hill - it beat us and we were probably averaging 80km/hr for the trip. Got some photos of the greenage as it moved in. Got some video driving back in the rain. My brother's car is lowered and the front spoiler was just scooping up water off the road as we were driving back to the airport - I was worried we would have to stop up and wait for the water to go off the road before we could finish off getting back to the airport.

You can see my lightning attempts taken from camera bag tripod while out at the airport, looking thru fences etc, woohoo, yeah, awesome! Not! At least I got a couple of good ones of the rex plane with lightning in the background. You can imagine how nervous me and everyone else was with how close you can see that lightning and storm front was and we didnt leave for another 15 minutes after that last photo. Took some video after we took off, havent had a chance to look at it yet.

Well done to everyone on their photos and stories and well done to SA for the show, look forward to the next one.

Nothing wrong with those photos Rick. Geez, that wall cloud was not only standing up on your side of the Gulf, but it was nearly dragging its hindparts on the ground as well!!! Awesome stuff and thanks for keeping us informed. smile

I should mention also that we've been without power now, for nearly 26 hours. shocked I can't reiterate enough, my thankfulness at having a little gennie... phew, though that does not save the fridge nor the hot water. frown

Well after driving 800km, I finally made it home at 5.30am this morning...will post a full report in the other thread tomorrow probably, or possibly later tonight depending on how I go. I had to be up at 8am for work so I'm completely rooted now. Not to mention that even in that two and a half hours I barely slept because I kept on having nightmares about bloody flood waters...but anywho more later, I'm off to my grandparents for Xmas pudding poke

Don't want to mess up the pictures and report thread so I'll just say here - wow. Incredible photos that have me looking at entry level DSLR's in anticipation to the next lot of storms. If I could get a few snaps half as good as some of those I'd be chuffed.

Nice sunset tonight smile

Do you guys know what type of clouds these are? Some type of Cb or Nimbostratus maybe? Very trippy it looked like the sandy bottom of the ocean kind of.

roves, splitcity, ryan, Helen (!), max, bd, rick(!), astro (!!)...damn you guys are good. Did anyone fail to take spectacular shots like me? Or are you guys experienced weather photographers?

I would be calling this Altocumulus Undulatus not Ns or Cb (u can't see the base of Ns) but thick Ac at that. Nice and unstable!

Bloody good pics! Lightning tree smile

Anyone know if big events like this coincide with increased storm activity in general? Would think that might be a hard correlation to make but maybe it's a sign of things to come poke

Picked up another 4mm this morning from a nice orange cored shower that passed over us...so much for "light" showers poke

Ohhh and I forgot to post my total of 62.8mm from yesterday, that's the highest we've ever recorded. Brings us to 74.8mm for December which makes it the 10th month in a row of above average rainfall (18 of the last 22 months have been above average!!). We are now also within reach of the 1000mm rainfall for the year, currently sitting on 963.9mm...can we do it?!
